A PLEA FOR THE CATHOLIC PRESS.

(Sydney Freeman's Journal, January 14.) The Rev Father O'Malley, S.J., of St. Ignatius' College, Riverview, preaching in on Sunday, said that the words of the Gospel " He was subject to them," naturally led him to speak of the Fourth Commandment. As all knew, it contained the duties of children towards their parents, and of the parents towards their children. After dwelling on the respective duties of both pareot and child, Father O'Malley pouched on the education question. While on this subject the preacher dwelt forcibly on the Catholic news paper as a means of education. If Catholics heard their religion constantly sneered at, and had no paper to defend them, they would grow quite ashamed of it. If they heard Ireland constantly slandered th«y would feel ashamed of its being known they were the decendants of Irishmen. Yel how did Irishmen deal with their Irish Catholic papers 1 He did not believe that they had a Bingle Irish Catholic daily paper in the world, because they would not support it 1 If they to«k a Protestant paper, or an infidel that abused their country and belief six days in the week, they would pay punctuallly on the day the account was due ; but if there was question of a poor Catholic paper that was fightiag for them, they would let it starve, How often had the proprietors to lo9e heavy amounts in paper and postage stamps 1 and how often did they lo se all I It was a duty to their children to furnish them with good Irish Catholic papers ; but to take these papers and not pay fo/ them was positive dishonesty. In the next life they would have to pay " the very last farthing." Father O'Mal ley concluded by an earnest appeal to his hearers to support tbe Catholic press.
