GRAIN AND SEED REPORT.

Messes. Samubl Orb and Co., Stafford street, report for the week ending February 1, as follows :— Wheat.— We reported fully on this cereal last week, and have really nothing further to add to it, as the market remains unaltered since then. Millers simply buy from hand to mouth in expectation of the new crop, and some of them stopping for their annual mill overhaul.. When the new crop comes on the market, business will settle down to it. Meantime we quote : Prime milling, velvet or Tuscan, 3s 9d to 3s 10s (though for a very fine parcel we got 3s lid) ; ordinary, 3s 6d to 3s 8d ; medium, 3a 3d to 3s 5d ; inferior and fowls' feed, 2s 6d to 3s. Oatsi — The animation mentioned in our report last week, has B absided a bit, though prices have ia no way receded, nor likely to now, till the new crop comes pouring in on us. The past few days' rain has been a great boon to our farmers south, as both grain and turnip crops were much in want of it. Harvesting operations are being vigorously carried on both North and South, and with fine weather we should have the new crop on the market in about three weeks. Prices at present are : — Prime milling, Is 9d ; good, heavy bright feed, 1b 8d to Is B£d ; ordinary, Is 6£d to Is 7id ; inferior, Is 5d to Is 6d. Grass Seeds. — Ryegrass : Large stocks of this seed had to beheld over from last year, which was a poor one indeed for producers. This, however, did not thwart a good many from keeping their paddocks up and cutting for seed again now, in the hope that the coming season would be a good one both here and on the other side. There has been a good area cut this year up North, but some of the northwest winds which they get frequently shook a lot out, thus diminishing very materially the quantity available from there. From all accounts there will be too much in the market this year, while the latest advices from Melbourne — a market which takes a large quantity —are that the unprecedeatly wet summer has caused no demand there yet, and unless this month is a hot one there will be comparatively little wanted. Stocks are also large over there— held over from last season. New seed is already in the market, and we had an offer for a large parcel, but in the course of a week or two we will revert to the subject and to the prospective prices. — Cocksfoot : This seed which is coining more into favour here, and for which there is always a big demand ; has been pretty well cleared out of the maeket, so that the new crop will meet with a good demand ; in fact there is now in transit a large quantity on its way to England, the market there and in Germ«ny being nearly always open for it. Orders are now North for a large quantity ; and while the crop is estimated at between 30,000 and 40,000 sacks, still the demand will be good, and prices about the same as last year.

Mr. F. Mbbnan, King street, reports— Wholesale prices, bags included : Oats, medium to prime, Is 5d to Is B£d. Wheat : milling, 8s 3d to 3s 6d ; fowls', 2s 9d to 3s.
