HARD WORK AND LONGEVITY.

The news comes over the pea that one day last week Mr. Gladstone, premier of England, in addition to felling a tree and translating several pages from the 3 reek, walked a few miles, made a speech, and then attended to those diplomatic duties which must in the nature of things, be enormous. As the liberal party in England is r at the present time, going through one of its most critical campaigns, it is plain to be seen that the responsibility and work put upon the shoulders of the Premier are enough for the strongest and most active of men. In England, Tennyson is 65 and Browning 72 ; Lord Houghton, better known as Mr. iV>onkton Milnes, is 75, Samuel Smiles is 68, and Fioude 60. In journalism, longevity is also remarkable. Parke Goodwin, editor of the New York Commercial, is on the threshold of 70. Dana wields the briskest pen in the metropolis at the good old. age of 66. Of oar actors, William Warren and John Gilbert have long passed 70 ; Boucicanlt is 62, and so is Bistori - r Joe Jefferson is 55 and Salvini 54 ; Barry Sullivan is 60 and Miss Stirling 67. Buckstone died at 77, Macready at 80, Mathews at 75 and Charles Kean at 67. Mtne. Celeste could delight an audience at 60. Helen Faucit is living as- Lady Martin at 65. Fanny Kemble is vigorous and vivacious at 76. Taglioni, " the chaste goddess of the dance," passed away but a few weeks ago at the age of 80. Her great rival, Fanny Klssler is still living. Baraum is fully 76, and surely Maggie Mitohell has been playing Fanchon for over half a. century. la the wide world of commerce and of science, we find men active like Commodore Vanderbilt, whose head was clear when he died at 83, Peter Cooper, who was 92, and Morse, who was 81.
