PROPERTY STOLEN

Auckland. —On the 14th or 15th instant, the counting house of WALTER LAMBOURNE, LTD., general merchants, 308-310 Ponsonby Road, Pionsonby, was broken into and the following stolen: Money— Twenty £SO notes, some of which may bear the following numbers, T. 038534, T. 038320, O/U.026174, T. 027807, and T. 008112; fourteen £1 notes; and £3 11s. Bd. in silver and coppers. Wristlet watches — Sixteen gentlemen’s nickel-plated round Solora, some dials wliite, some pink, and some light brown with “ 4 jewel ” thereon, each fitted with seconds-hand and black, brown, or grey leather wrist-strap; a gentlemen’s nickel-plated square Solora, probably 15-jewels, fitted with seconds-hand and leather wrist-strap; a gentlemen’s nickel - plated round Hermes Swiss with screw-on back, probably white dial with “ Incobac ” thereon, seconds-hand, leather wrist-strap. Miscellaneous —Twelve 9ct. gold round liinged lockets, about 1 in. in diameter, engraved around edge, small gold chain attached; four chromium-plated round fruit-bowls, about 9 in. in diameter; two chromium-plated round casseroles. “ E.P.N.S.” on them, Sin. in diameter, fitted with two chromium-plated handles; a carving-set, consisting of stainless-steel knife with 9 in. blade, fork, and steel, English make, and branded “ Christopher Johnson ”, square xylonite handles; four children’s silver-plated feeder-sets, each consisting of spoon and pusher, fitted to card; three silver-plated jam spoons, each fitted to card; a set of silver-plated salt-and-pepper shakers, may be branded “E.P.N.S.”; three leather shopping-bags, 16 in. by 12 in. by 9 in., one blue, the others black, fitted with two leather handles and fasten with four leather straps and buckles, fold-over flap on top; and a pair of cutting-out shears, about 12 in. long, as used by tailors; total value, £1124 11s. 6d. Carving-set and shears identifiable. A finger-impression, probably that of offender, found on a cash-box tray, has been preserved. ftr£cn/'fideerw, fotyj-ttb Auckland. —llth or 12th September last, from a storeroom at the Western Reclamation Military Camp, Hamer Street, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Army Department), fourteen bayonets, 12 in. long, “ pattern 88 ” on blade, in black machine-sewn leather scabbards ; about one thousand rounds of -303 and -300 ammunition, the former in packets of ten and the latter in packets of twenty, with “ R.A.F.” thereon ; and about one hundred rounds of -303 calibre drill ammunition, C.A.C. brand, in packets of ten, wrapped in black paper; total value, £l6 6s. 9d. Portion identifiable.

Auckland. —On the 14th September last, the dwelling of LOW WAY, corner of Shore and Seaview Roads, Remuera, was broken into and the following stolen : A cheque-form, No. P. 44259 (recovered); a gentlemen’s hand-made creamcoloured silk coat-shirt; a gentlemen's blue poplin shirt with fine white stripes, size 4 ; a gentlemen’s pink singlet with round neck, long sleeves; a gentlemen’s silver old Rotherhams key-wind hunting watch, white dial, Roman numerals, gold-coloured hands, black seconds hand, shield in circle engraved on front case, “ L.W.” scratched on inside back case, silver double chain with bar at one end ; a chequebook on the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., Newton, containing forms Nos. P. 44258-80; and £440 in money, made up of a £SO note and £lO, £5, £l, and 10s. notes ; total value, £452 11s. 2d. The offence may have been committed by a Man (name unknown), age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 6 in. ; well dressed, who, on 15th September last, cashed the recovered cheque at the Star Hotel, Newton ; it had been filled in for £3 in favour of John Sutton, and signed “ Gordon Lennox.” At the request of the licensee, this man wrote on a piece of paper the name and address, “ John Sutton, 27 Kiwi Road, Point Chevalier,” which was subsequently found to be fictitious.

Auckland. —lßth September last, from a motor-omnibus between Auckland and Helensville, the property of WILLIAM MASEFIELD CHANNON, Old Mill Road, Helensville, a Liberty four-cycle impulse starter magneto, American make, painted green, serial Nos. 186710 and U. 18641, weight about 20 lb. ; value, £ls. Identifiable.

. Auckland.— 9th October last, from a motor-car in Queen Street, the property of AGNES MARY BRADY, 112 St. Andrew’s Road, Epsom, an H.M.V. portable gramophone, about 16 in. by 18 in., covered with black rexine, with about five records ; total value, £5 10s. Identification doubtful.

Auckland.— Between the 18th and 20th October last, from a motor-car in a community garage, Wood Street, the property of PETER UNKOVICH, 26 Nelson Street, a gentlemen's rolled-gold oblong wristlet-watch, grey dial, Arabic numerals, seconds hand, chromium wrist-band of oblong links, one of which is tin ; and three packets of cigarettes ; total value, £5 12s. 3d. Watch identifiable.

Auckland. —2lst or 22nd October last, from a safe in the dwelling of PERCY BATHURST, 146 Richmond Road, about £6O in money, mostly half-crowns and florins, some wrapped in cellophane in £2 lots. Not identifiable.

Auckland. —3rd ultimo, from the Aurora Hotel, Victoria Street, the property of ALEXANDER KEREBS, licensee, a child’s pedal car, about 48 in. by 24 in. by 24 in., Ryce make, painted green ; value, £lO. Identifiable. The offence may have been committed by a Man (name unknown), age about thirty-five, height about 5 ft. 8 in., probably a seaman, medium build, fair freckled complexion, curly auburn hair ; wearing a brown leather lumber jacket, working trousers, canoe shirt, and black shoes, who was seen carrying a similar pedal car in Victoria Street, about the time the offence was committed.

Auckland. —6th ultimo, from a motor-car in Nelson Street, the property of LENA PRUDENCE THORP, 16 Waitoa Street, Parnell, a brown fibrolite suitcase, 30 in. long, two straps, reinforced leather corners, two fasteners ; a lightbrown fibrolite suitcase, 24 in. long ; a grey worsted costume with pin stripes, W. size, grey lining with red stripes, “ Schneideman’s, Wellington ” on tag ; a gold bar with a naval crown, set with seven pearls ; a silver Nelson College Old Boys badge ; three pairs of trousers to fit boy aged two, one with red and white checks, one with blue and white checks, and the other with green and white checks; twelve white shirts to fit boy, aged two ; a green smock ; twelve baby’s napkins ; two white locknit slips ; two white vests ; four pairs of white pantees ; three pairs of brown silk stockings, size 101 ; a red and grey frock with floral pattern, buttons on front, band at waist, gathered skirt; a lemon-coloured linen frock, band at waist, buttons on front, pleats in skirt; a navy-blue silk frock of satin back material, full circular skirt gathered at top, button at back of neek (all ladies’ clothing W. size); three white cot sheets; and 7s. fid. in money; total value, £47 13s. fid. Identifiable except money.

Auckland.— 7th ultimo, from a room in the Albion Hotel, the property of FRANK CHARLTON RAPLEY, H.M.S. “ Gambia,” a brown leather-bound suitcase, 24 in. by 16 in. by 8 in., made in Australia, two metal fasteners, containing a blue beret, naval issue ; a khaki battledress ; a khaki jersey ;. two pairs of khaki shorts ; a pair of grey flannel trousers, John Court brand ; a blue sports shirt; some socks ; handkerchiefs ; and underwear (all marked “ C.H.X. 108794, F. C. Rapley ”); a boot-cleaning outfit; £ lb. of cigarette tobacco, naval issue ; a tin (fifty) of Churchman cigarettes ; and a brown leather wallet with “ Good Luck ” thereon, containing £l7 in money, including two Australian 10s. notes; and some photographs; total value, £3l os. ,2d. Auckland. —On the sth or 6th instant, the countingliouse of DOWNER AND CO., LTD., Parau, Nihotapu, was broken into and £24 18s. in money stolen. The following, the property of WILLIAM ALFRED STEVENSON, was also stolen : A 16 mm. Cine Kodak Special camera with a 1 in. f.l-9 lens and a 15 mm. f. 2-7 wide-angle lens which are fitted on a turret head for optional use, camera fitted for use on tripod, covered with black leatherette with plated facings, value £175 (it is considered that there are only a few of these cameras in the Dominion), in black leather case about l(i in. by 7 in. by 7 in. with snap-fastener, lined with blue velvet, shoulder-strap and carrying-handle attached and fitted with compartments containing the following : A 3 in. plated f. 4-5 telescopic-telephoto lens, made by Kodak Ltd., and fitted with two stud-holes for attaching to camera, value, £75 ; an exposure-meter. German make, fitted with dial and calibrations, in soft leather cover with zip-fastener; and four spools (each 100 ft.) of 16 mm. Kodak Super X film, speed 27d. in round black tin, outside packet may have numbers “ 5256 ”, “ 148 ” “ 2 ” and “ to be exposed by April, 194 U ” thereon ; total value, £268. Identification doubtful. The offence may have been committed by a Man (name unknown), age about forty-five, height about 5 ft. 5 in., medium build, stooped ; wearing a long dark overcoat and dark suit (no hat); shabby appearance. Rabone spirit level; a Keystone rip saw ; a Disston cross-cut saw ; a Disston panel saw ; a Disston rip saw with cracked handle ; and a quantity of other carpenters’ tools, some marked “ J.W.F.,” some “ D. 8.” and “ X.,” and some “ W.H.G.” ; total value, £3B Is. Identifiable.

Howick. —Between the 10th and 12th ultimo, from a drain-digging machine, Pah Road, Cockle Bay, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Public Works Department), an Alimite grease gun, about 10 in. long, number “6385” thereon, fitted with flexible hose about 12 in. long with pull-on side nozzle ; and a flat conveyor pulley wrench, about 9 in. by 1 in., key type with closed end, number “5554” thereon ; total value, £4 6s. Identifiable.

Ngaruawahia.— 2oth ultimo, from a hut in the military camp, the property of WILFRED OUTHWAITE, 90 Franklin Road, Ponsonby, a gentlemen’s silver octagonshaped Pierce waterproof and shockproof wristlet watch, No. 68558, white dial, luminous numerals, “ S. 1556-1 X 6723 ” thereon, chromium wrist-band about \ in. wide; value, £8 15s. identifiable.

Te Awamutu. —Between the 15th and 19th ultimo, from a store in the R.N.Z.A.F. Station, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Air Department), a khaki twill sleeping-bag, marked “ U.5.N.,” made by BurtonDixie Corporation, Newark, N.J., America, filled with down and waterfowl feathers, zip-fastener around it; value, £lO. Identifiable.

Rotorua. —On the 15tli or 16th ultimo, the shop of THOMAS EDMUND TURNER, storekeeper, Ngongotaha, was broken into and the following stolen : A large quantity of cigarettes and tobacco of various brands ; and a small black Westclox alarm clock, white dial, black numerals ; total value, £42 16s. 6d. Not identifiable.

Palmerston North. —lsth or 16th July last, the property of EDWIN JOHN JEFFRIES, Kerikeri, a cheque for £4 16s. (recovered); a tan leather wallet of envelope shape, repaired along edge ; a dark-tan leather wallet, 5 in. by 3 in., with zip-fastener; £1 in silver ; South African, American, and other foreign coins, value 10s. ; a petrol license in complainant's name ; and sundry papers ; total value, £7 11s. 6d. Wallets and petrol-license identifiable. The offence may have been committed by Donald James Rankin, referred to in Police Gazette, 1945, page 581 ; wearing a grey suit-coat with fine black checks, navy-blue heavy trousers, pullover, and brown felt hat. On 15th July last he was given a ride in complainant’s motor-car between Takapau and Palmerston North, and had an opportunity to steal the property described from among luggage when he was alone in the car for about thirty minutes at Pahiatua. About 18th July the cheque was cashed in Wellington by a seaman who obtained it from a man of Rankin’s description who gave that name.

Levin. — 6th or 7th October last, from a motor-car in Oxford Street, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Air Department), two gentlemen’s Air Force double-breasted greatcoats, black buttons, white lining, two side pockets, one size 7 with New Zealand shoulder flashes, and the other size 4 with New Zealand shoulder flashes in one pocket; total value, £7. Identification doubtful.

Wellington. —Between the Bth and 13th September last, from the shop of PARKER AND WILLIAMS, 54 Ghuznee Street, an aluminium Black and Decker -4- in. electric drill, painted black, serial No. M. 63548, key tied to drill, 12 ft. of flex with three-pin plug attached; value, £l2 10s. Identifiable.

Wellington. —l9th or 20th September last, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Railways Department), a five-valve Mullard broadcast radio, brown bakelitc cabinet, 94 in. by 6-[ in., serial No. 16030 stamped on back of chassis ; value, £l3 Is. 2d. Identifiable. On 19th September last the radio was delivered to the outward parcels office for despatch to New Plymouth and records show that it was placed in the guard’s van of the New Plymouth express on the following day, but it failed to reach the consignee, H. C. Collier. The offence may have been committed by Cecil James Ellery, referred to in Police Gazette, 1945, page 815, who was employed in the parcels office and who has been convicted of stealing two other radios which were for consignment. He has been interviewed, but no evidence resulted.

Wellington. —Between the 10th and 12th October last, from a room in the annex at the Y.M.C.A., Willis Street, the property of JOHN OWEN WILLIAMS, a double-breasted tweed overcoat, size 5, half-lined with dark material, breast and side pockets, vent in back ; value, £B. Identifiable.

Wellington. —29th October last, from a dwelling at 157 Onepu Road, Lyall Bay, the property of GWENDOLINE JONES, 707 Pakowhai Road, Hastings, a red patent-leather handbag, about 15 in. by 9 in., flap at top, dome-fastener, one compartment, two small black purses inside, containing about £4 10s. in money; two ration-books in name “G. Jones ” ; a nail-file ; face-powder, &c.; a ladies’ gold old wristlet watch, round gold-coloured dial slightly larger than a shilling, probably Rolex make, black hands and numerals, “G. Reston, 4-2-22 ” on back, wrist-band of gold links ; and a pair of horn-rimmed spectacles; total value, £l9 10s. Identifiable except money.

Wellington. —9th ultimo, the property of WILLIAM PATRICK SMITH, 23 Strathavon Road, Miramar, a steel hunting knife, blade about 8 in. long made from circular saw, “ Faithful Fanny, 24-16-19,” and “ 1943 ” thereon, curved cutting edge, serrated edge on back, wooden handle carved in shape of a panther with paua-shell eyes, white teeth, and red mouth, in three-ply wooden sheath covered with grey Alsatian dog-skin, square loop for strap on each side ; and a steel hunting knife with slightly curved blade 9 in. long, made from circular saw, stainless-steel hilt, slightly curved handle of stag horn, aluminium, black and red fibre materials, and boot leather (these materials being laminated), brass pin through handle ; total value, £22 10s. Identifiable. On above date the knives were stolen from an exhibition held by the Hobby House Club in Todd Motors, Ltd., Courtenay Place.

Wellington. —l9th or 20th ultimo, from the dwelling of EDWARD DUNCAN, 53a Yule Street, a gentlemen’s rolledgold Elgin hunting watch, white dial, black hands and numerals, seconds-hand, “ E.D.” on front case; and £2 in money ; total value, £9 10s. Watch identifiable.

Blenheim.— Between the 29th September last and Ist October, the shop of W. E. GASGOINE, LTD., grocers, Alfred Street, Avas broken into and the folloAving stolen : 3s. in money ; a quantity of cigarettes, Craven A and Riverhead Gold brands; and four boxes, each containing 2| lb. of chocolates ; total value, £4.
