On the 27th October, 1933, Samuel Hardstaff, farmer, of Raupo, advertised in the “ New Zealand Herald ” for a girl to assist in the house, and he received a reply from accused, care of Victoria Street Postoffice, Auckland, accepting the position, provided her railway fare was forwarded to her. Accused, who represented himself to be a traveller for the Australian Battery Supplies Co., 84 Tory Street, Wellington, stayed at the Criterion Hotel, Wanganui, from the 12th to 15th ultimo, and induced the wife of the licensee, Charlotte Rhimes, to cash a cheque for £5 75., drawn on the Bank of New South Wales, Courtenay Place, Wellington, payable to “ Cash,” and signed W. H. Byfield. The cheque also has on it the words “ Australasian Battery Supplies Co.” impressed with a rubber stamp. He is also suspected of several offences of thefts from- hotels. NO warrant.
