Complainant, who met accused in the Waverley Hotel, accompanied him to a house in Hazlett Street, where they had tea, after which he gave accused £5 to purchase liquor. Accused and Olive Pearson left the house together, the latter returning later to inform complainant that Carrup had been arrested and that it would take £7 to procure his release on bail. Bishop gave her a £lO note for the purpose mentioned, but he subsequently discovered that her statement was false and that he had been defrauded. Pearson has been interviewed and admits the offence. Palmerston North. —On or about the 18th ultimo, for false pretences, J. H. Browne (name probably fictitious), age about twenty-six, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresh complexion, dark hair, sharp features ; dressed in a dark suit, tan shoes, and dark overcoat (no hat). Accused obtained a pair of fawn art-silk woollen socks, a pair of grey silk cashmere lined socks, and a gentlemen’s plum-coloured National felt hat (size 6|), value £1 175., and £1 3s. cash from Francis Edward Tozer, clothier, Cuba Street, by means of , a valueless cheque for £3, No. A. 88980, on the Bank of New Zealand, Taihape. The blank cheque, with others, was stolen from Gerald Alexander Rotherham’s overcoat, which was in his motor - car at Dannevirke golf-links on the 16th instant. There is another charge pending. No warrant.

Palmerston North. — 27th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Palmerston North Prison for two days in default of paying £1 ss. fine and costs for a breach of the Lights on Vehicles Act, Wilfred Coutts Gosnell, age about twenty height 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, dark complexion, brown hair, blue eyes ; speaks very slowly ; fond of drink.
