Accused, being married, went through a form of marriage with Annie Mary Phelan at Hamilton on the 17th January, 1925, and falsely stated to the Registrar that he was a bachelor. Wairoa. —18th September last, on warrant for false pretences, Charles Henry Lord, alias Harold Lloyd, age thirty-six, height 5 ft. 4 in., insurance agent and canvasser, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, auburn hair, hazel eyes, scar on left thumb and little finger ; dressed in a dark suit and light-felt hat. Accused obtained £1 Bs. cash from William Drysdale, hotelkeeper, Marumaru, by means of a valueless cheque for £2 which he tendered in payment of 12s. for a night’s lodging for himself and a friend. Wairoa. —Bth instant, on warrant for theft of £315, the property of Robert Joshua Burns, cook, Tuai, Waikaremoana, Charles straight, age about forty, height about 5 ft. 9 in., miner and labourer, thin build, fair complexion, dark hair, stooped shoulders ; dressed in gabardine trousers, dark coat and vest, and grey felt hat; speaks quickly; walks as if suffering from ailment in his back. Accused, who in partnership with complainant conducted a cookhouse at Tuai (Waikaremoana Hydro Electric Works), went to Wairoa to deposit in the bank, on behalf of his partner and himself, £315, with which he disappeared. Accused, who was employed by Tom Hodson to deliver bread, received £1 17s. Id. from Eva Frances Maunder, 116 Campbell Street, on terms requiring him to pay it to his employer, but fraudulently omitted so to do. There are several similar charges pending. He may be identical with E. W. Roberts, referred to in Police Gazette, 1925, page 682.
