Memorandum for the Commissioner of Police, Wellington.] I should be glad if you would bring under the notice of all police officers at the chief centres Rule 1070 (a) of this Department, offering a reward of £5 to the police officer securing a conviction against any person guilty of wilful damage to coin-in-the slot telephones, or of stealing money therefrom.

Owing to the increasing number of instances on which the cabinets are being put to improper and filthy use, the telephones are rendered unfit for conversation, and the public are complaining of their insanitary condition. As the telephones serve a great public convenience in times of emergency, calls for a doctor, fires, &c., it is the endeavour of the Department to provide an efficient service, but its efforts are considerably hampered by the constantly occurring abuses to which both the telephones and cabinets are subjected. Any action on the part of your officers to assist the Department would be much appreciated. W. R. Morris, Secretary.

Rule 1070 (a). — Abuse of Coin-in-the-slot Telephone: Reward to Police Officer. In order to encourage the detection of persons who are guilty of wilful damage to ooin-in-the-slot telephones, or of stealing money therefrom, or of any other abuse for which a conviction is recorded, the Department will pay to the police officer concerned a gratuity of £5 for each of such conviotions obtained through his efforts. Constable Peter Christian Berthelsen, Constable William Stuart Boyle, Gonstable John William Kennedy, Constable Thomas Mahoney, Sergeant James Alexander Mathew, Constable Robert Reid Millar, Constable Leslie Gordon Newman, and Constable George Sivyer have been appointed to be Inspectors of Factories.

Police-gaoler appointed. (See New Zealand Gazette, 1919,.page 976.) Constable Timothy James Cummings has been appointed to be Police-gaoler at Whakatane.
