Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —Robert Fawcett, hotelkeeper, Karangahape Road, reports stolen from his bedroom, between the 13th and 15th instant, a money-box, representing the head and bust of a negress, stands about 6 in. high, value 45., containing about five pounds’ worth of old coins, such as those of King George, &c.

Otahuhu. —Theft from the dwelling of Todd Brothers: Alfred George Ellis has been arrested by Constable H. P. Kennedy, Auckland police, for this offence, and committed for trial. Stolen property, except boots, recovered.

Te Awamutu. — Edwin (or Edward) Follis is charged on warrant with having, between the 19th and 31st ultimo, stolen from a tent at Te Rau-a-moa a £5 note, the property of Edwin Easy. Offender is a colonial, about twenty-six years of age, about sft. 7in. high, medium build, dark hair, very small fair moustache; very talka'ive. Supposed to have gone to Auckland.

Gisborne. —Frederick Woodhams, charged with the theft of Thomas Powell’s table-covers and cruet, has been arrested by Constable C. O’Reilly, Opotiki police, and remanded to Gisborne. Stolen property not recovered. (99.)

Wellington. — Abel Collier is charged on warrant with having, on the 6th instant, stolen a sovereign from the person of James Richard McVicar. Offender is a native of the colony, a spieler, twenty-three years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. high, slight build, fair hair and complexion, blue eyes, cleanshaved ; dressed in a fawn-coloured tweed sao-suit, and soft black-felt hat; an associate of thieves and prostitutes. The offence was committed in company with a man named Stone, who has since been convicted and sentenced to three months’ labour.

Wellington. —Lizzie O’Driscoll, 78, Wellington Terrace, reports stolen from her bedroom, on the 21st instant, a ladies’ gold open-faced watch, maker and number unknown, some of the figures on dial worn off; and a chain of black braid and jet: value, £llos.

Wellington. —Richard Crowther, labourer, 53, Hopper Street, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 20th instant, a gentlemen’s silver lever hunting-watch, number unknown ; a gentlemen’s very old English silver lever open-faced watch, number unknown, a small piece of the dial chipped off over the fixure xn.; a gold vinaigrette case, about the size of a two-shilling piece; part of a silver watch-chain, about 8 in. long, twisted-rope pattern; a gold cable bangle (no padlock); and about 3s. in silver: total value, £5 18s.

Cullensville. —Mrs. W. S. Gregg, Mahakipawa, reports stolen from her bedroom, about the 7th instant, a ladies’ gold keyless hunting-watch, number unknown, T.W.C. on the small centre, no glass, yellow dial; and a chain of four strands, safety-pin in lieu of ordinary bar, small gauntlet with flowers and leaves thereon attached : value, £25.

Lyttelton.— Heinrick Henenberger is charged on warrant with having, on the 17th instant, stolen from the dwelling of Margaret Bennett, Sumner Road, a pair of opera-glasses, value £2: since recovered. Accused is a German, about twenty-seven years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. or 9 in. high, fair complexion, brown hair, shaved except brown moustache, medium build; dressed in a faded-green saccoat and vest, black trousers, white-straw hat with black band, and tan boots; usually wears glasses.

Christchurch.— Michael Burns is charged on warrant with having, on the 9th December, 1899, stolen from the White Hart Hotel a parcel containing five skins of chamoisleather, value 155., the property of James Farquhar, tanner. Offender is a native of Christchurch, a bootmaker, about thirty-two years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, fresh complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, small nose, small anchor on each arm. Supposed to have gone to the bays, grass-seed-ing.

Christchurch. —James Mitchell, labourer, reports stolen from Holme’s boardinghouse, on the sth instant, a coat and vest, value £3 ; since recovered, it having been sold to H. Smith, a secondhand dealer, by a man, name unknown, who is described as about thirty years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. high, medium build, fair complexion and moustache ; wore a blueserge suit and soft brown hat; can be identified.

Kurow. —Rouleyn G. C. Munro, labourer, reports stolen from the Otemata Hotel, Otemata, on the 16th instant, a silver lever hunting-watch, No. 5044, “R.M.” on outside case, value £2 10s.; a silver chain, small links, with greenstone charm in the shape of a shark’s tooth attached, value £1; and a Waterbury watch, value ss.

Ophir. —Thomas H. Minehan, shearer, Matakanui, reports stolen from his bedroom, during the night of the Bth instant, two £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, No. A 048584 and A 08355 7; two £1 notes, bank and numbers unknown ; and a pack of cards. Suspicion attached to Timothy Desmond, who occupied the same room. Description: Colonial,

about thirty years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. or 9in. high, a labourer, slight build, dark complexion, dark hair and moustache only ; dressed in a dark-tweed coat, trousers to match, black vest, and soft brown-felt hat. He is supposed to have gone to Oamaru, via St. Bathan’s and Naseby, in company with a man named Thomas Hames, or Hams, who is described as about thirty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 11 in. high, medium build, fair hair and complexion, bald, brownish moustache only, has lost three fingers and top of thumb off right hand ; a shearer and labourer; dressed in a black coat and vest, dark-tweed trousers, and soft black-felt hat.

Invercargill. Theft from John Sarsfield Murphy’s dwelling : The case of the clock is now furl her described as iron, painted black, a beautiful imitation of marble, “ Ansonia Clock Co., U.S.A. Patented June, 1882 ”on inside plate, dial covered with glass, mounted by a gilt edging, small circle of gilded material in centre. The knives are the Bird Nest brand, makers Sothern and Richardson, Sheffield ; the forks and spoons are marked W.G. &S. S. A.
