(See Police Gazette, 1888, page G 4.) Jack Madden, charged on warrant of commitment to gaol in default of paying £6 fine and costs for maliciously damaging property belonging to Elizabeth Burton, has been arrested by Constable Edwin Joseph Lawless, Napier Police. Fine and costs paid.

Description : A native of Wales, a shearer and labourer, twenty-nine years of age, sft. 9in. high, stout build, sallow complexion, round full face, brown hair, a bare spot about the size of a shilling on back of head, usually clean-shaved except small brown moustache ; generally wears brown-tweed suit and soft black-felt hat; slovenly gait. He left by the steamer “ Wakatipu ”on the 19th ultimo for Sydney.

Thomas John Hoare is charged, on warrant issued by tbo Invercargill Bench, with deserting his wife, at Invercargill, since or about the Ist May, 1887. Description : A native of England, a barber, also works as a shearer, &c., twentyfive years of age, sft. lOlin. high, slight build, light-brown hair, generally clean-shaved except light-brown moustache, mark of cut on forehead and on left eyebrow, three moles on

back of neck. He was for some time in the police force of this colony. He was recently employed on Mr. Fulton’s farm, New Brighton, near Mosgiel, and left there on the 16tli ultimo for Dunedin. John McLelland is charged on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Gaol, Auckland, for three months’ labour, issued by the Auckland Bench, in default of paying £7 17s. Gd. due for the support of his three children. Description : Supposed a native of Scotland, a butcher and slaughterman, about forty-eight or fifty years of age, sft. llin. high, stout build, florid complexion, clean-shaved except red or sandy beard ; generally wears black or bluecloth coat and hard round-felt hat.

John Dignan, alias Ginger, is charged on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Goal, Auckland, for one months’ labour, issued by the Auckland Bench, in default of paying £5 fine and 6s. costs for unlawfully taking rock-oysters from Rangitoto Reef on tho Bth ultimo. Description: A native of Australia, a labourer and oyster-boatman, twenty-three years of age, sft. sJin high, medium build, fresh freckled complexion, blue eyes, red hair, and small sandy goatee and moustache. Description: Supposed English, a Herekino settler, formerly of Whangaruru, near Russell, about fifty years of age, about sft. 7in. high, medium build, fair complexion, red face, fair or light-brown hair, and long sandy beard whiskers and moustache turning grey, slightly stooped, speaks quickly and smiles when speaking; has been a sailor, and holds a master’s coasting certificate ; when last seen wore a snuff-coloured coat and vest and dark-tweed trousers, all well worn.

John Thorburn is charged on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Gaol, Auckland, for two months’ labour, issued by the Kaitaia Bench, in default of paying £5 fine and £5 costs for assaulting Rapeata Tamati, at Waihopo, on the Ist April last. Description: Supposed a native of the colony, a gumdigger, about twenty-eight years of age, about sft. lOin. or llin. high, very stout build, 14st. weight, dark complexion, very dark-brown hair cut short, dark sandy beard whiskers and moustache trimmed close, large round head, large flat face, and large hands ; fond of drink.
