At the Government House, at Wellington, this fourteenth day of September, 1886. Present: His Excellency the Governor in Council.

WHEREAS by “ The Fisheries Conservation Act, 1884 ” (hereinafter termed “ the said Act ”), it is, among other things, enacted that the Governor in Council may from time to time make, alter, and revoke regulations for the purposes- therein mentioned, which said regulations shall have force and effect only in any waters or places specified therein:

And whereas by Order in Council dated the twenty-seventh day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-five, certain regulations were made in exercise of the powers conferred by the said Act, prescribing a close season for rockoysters : And whereas it is now expedient to extend such close season in respect of the part of the colony hereinafter set forth:

Now, therefore, I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by the said Act, and by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, do hereby make the regulations hereinafter set forth: — Regulations.

The close season for rock-oysters prescribed by the regulations made under the said Act by Order in Council bearing date the twenty-seventh day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-five, is hereby declared to commence from the date hereof, and is also extended, as also the operation of the said recited regulations, until the thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-nine, in respect of the foreshore of the coast and adjacent reefs from the north side of the mouth of the Turanganui River, Poverty Bay, to Wainui North, including Tua Motu Island. Any person, committing a breach of the above regulation shall be liable to a penalty of not less than one pound and not exceeding fifty pounds.

IN pursuance and exercise of the power and authority in this behalf enabling me, I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby fix and appoint that sittings of the District Courts of Western Otago, Timaru and Oamaru, Ashburton, and Westland, for civil and criminal business, shall be held as follows, from and after the first day of October next, in lieu of those previously fixed and appointed-

Western Otago District. In the Courthouse, Invercargill, on the 2nd November,

Timaru and Oamaru District. In the Courthouse, Oamaru, on the Bth November. In the Courthouse, Timaru, on the 11th November. In the Courthouse, Waimate, on the 15th November, for civil business only.

Salmon, Trout, dc., protected.

At the Government House, at Wellington, this twenty-first day of September, 1886. Present: His Excellency the Governor in Council.

IN exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, by and with the consent and advice of the Executive Council of the said colony, doth hereby order and declare that in all parts of the said colony salmon, young salmon, salmon-fry, trout, young trout, and trout-fry, together with all other salmonidse, and also all whitefish, tench, and perch, which have been introduced into the said Colony of New Zealand, shall be and are hereby protected, subject, however, to the operation of such open seasons for fishing for and taking such fish as the Governor may from time to time declare by regulations to be made under the said Act or any amendment thereof; and doth hereby further declare that ail the above-men-tioned fish shall come under all the provisions of the said Act in so far as such provisions are not inconsistent with the provisions of “ The Fisheries Conservation Act, 1884.”

Begulations tinder “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867."

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities in him vested by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for the Wellington and Wairarapa Acclimatisation District.

Regulations. 1. Licenses to fish for trout in the rivers in that district or part of the North Island to the southward of the following boundary-line: Commencing from the mouth of the Manawatu River and following the course of that river to the Manawatu Gorge ; thence in a direct line from such Gorge to the mouth of the Waimata River, on the East Coast, known as “ the Wellington and Wairarapa Acclimatisation District,” will be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society (hereinafter termed “ the said society”), or any one authorized by the said Secretary in that behalf, and for every such license a fee of twenty shillings will be charged: Provided it shall not be obligatory upon the said Secretary or his deputy to issue a license. 2. The Secretary of the said society may issue day licenses to bona fide travellers and strangers not resident within the district aforesaid, on their introduction to him by any two members of the said society, and on payment of a fee of two shillings and sixpence for each day’s fishing: Provided that this payment may be remitted if the applicant be a member of or hold a valid license from any other society in New Zealand which grants the like privilege. 3. Any holder of a license may fish with one rod and line for trout, and may use a landing-net or gaff to secure any

trout caught with such rod and line, in the above-named rivers, from the first day of October, one thousand eight hundred and. eiglity-six, to the thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven, both inclusive. 4. No license shall authorize any person other than the person named therein to fish, and that with natural or artificial fly or. minnow only. 5. Any person fishing either without a license, or with any other bait than as aforesaid, or who shall, on demand of any person holding and showing a license, or on the demand of any ranger, police officer, or constable, fail to produce and show to such person, ranger, police officer, or constable his license, or the contents of his creel, basket, or bag, or the bait used by him for .taking fish, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds. 6. .No cross-line fishing, stroke-hauling, or any other unsportsmanlike. device shall be used for the purpose of taking, catching, or killing trout, nor shall any of the above-men-tioned baits be used with any medicated or chemical preparation whatever.

7. All trout not exceeding ten inches in length taken by any person shall be immediately returned alive to the water ; and any person convicted of infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds. 8. Except as aforesaid, no person shall fish or use any net or other engine, instrument, or device for taking fish in any river or stream within the district aforesaid, or at the mouth or entrance of any such river or stream ; and all persons offending against this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 9. For the purposes of these regulations the mouth of every such river or stream shall be deemed to include every outlet of the same and the sea-sliore between such outlets, and shall extend over a radius of one-quarter of a mile from the point or line_ where the waters of such river or stream meet those, of the sea or of any harbour at low water.

10. Any person who puts, throws, or places, or allows to be put, thrown, or placed, into any river or stream in the said district, or at the 'mouth or entrance of any such river or stream, any dynamite or other explosive substance, or any matter or liquid deleterious to fish, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding one hundred pounds. 11. No person shall buy, sell, or expose or offer for sale, or shall fish for the purpose of obtaining for sale, any salmon or trout, or any part thereof; and any person infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 12. If any person shall be convicted of any offence against these regulations the license (if any) held by the offender shall thereupon become void. 13. These regulations shall come into force as from the date of the publication thereof in the New Zealand Gazette. Regulations for Trout-fishing, under “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” Nelson District.

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for the Provincial District of Nelson, and in the waters thereof.

Regulations.

1. Any holder of a license as hereinafter mentioned may fish for trout with rod and line, and may use a landing-net to secure any trout caught with such rod and line, in each river or stream in the Provincial District of Nelson which flows, into Blind Bay* from the first day of October, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six, to the thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven, both inclusive.. Such licenses will be issued under the hand of the Honorary Secretary of the Nelson Acclimatisation Society, and for every such license a fee of ten shillings will be charged. 2. The Secretary of the said society may issue day licenses to bond fide travellers and strangers not resident within the district aforesaid, on payment of a fee of two shillings and sixpence for each day’s fishing. 3. Any holder of a license may fish with one rod and line for, trout,. and may use a landing-net to secure any trout caught with such rod and line, in the above-named rivers, from the first day of October, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six, to the thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven, both inclusive.

Regulations for Trout-fishing, under “ The Salmon and Troiit ‘Act, 1867,” North Canterbury District.

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His' Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for that part of the Provincial District of Canterbury to the north of the Rangitata River, and in the \vaters thereof.

Regulations. 1. Licenses to fish for trout, perch, and tench in all the waters in the provincial district north of the Rangitata River will be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, at Christchurch, and for every such license a fee of twenty shillings will be charged: Provided that it shall not be obligatory upon the said Secretary to issue a license. 2. Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish in any of the said waters from the sixteenth day of October in any year to the thirty-first day of March in the year following, inclusive, between the hours of five a.m. and ten p.m. only, but no such license shall confer any right of entry upon the land of any person without his consent.

3. No person shall fish for, take, catch, or kill, or have in his possession, or attempt to fish for, take, catch, or kill, in any manner whatever, any of the salmonidse or trout, except during the above-mentioned period. 4. Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish with one rod and line only, and with the following baits : natural or artificial fly, natural or artificial minnow, silveries, bullies ( Eleotris gobioides), grasshoppers, spiders, caterpillars, creepers, and worms. 5. No person shall use any other bait, or any method, device, or contrivance of any sort or kind whatever, for the purpose of fishing for, taking, catching, or killing trout, perch, or tench, except a rod and line, landing-net, and gaff, for fish taken with rod and line.

6. No cross-line fishing, stroke-hauling, or any other unsportsmanlike device shall be used for the purpose of taking, catching, or killing trout, perch, or tench, nor shall any of the baits above mentioned be used with any medicated or chemical preparation whatever. 7. No person shall fish without a license, and every person fishing shall, on demand of any ranger, constable, member of

the Acclimatisation Society, or person producing a license, produce and show to such ranger, member, constable, or person his license and the contents of his creel or bag, and the bait used by him for taking, catching, or killing trout, perch, or tench. 8. Every trout not exceeding ten inches in length from nose to tip of tail, taken or caught by any person, shall immediately be returned alive into the water from which the same is taken.

■ 9. No person shall put, throw, or place, or allow to be put, thrown, or placed, into any of the said waters, any sawdust or sawmill refuse, or anything of any kind or description whatever poisonous, deleterious, or noxious to fish.

10. No person shall take, fish for, catch, or kill in any manner whatever, or have in his possession, any salmon, salmon-parr, or smolts, or the ova, young, or fry of any salmon in any stage whatever ; and any of the above-named taken by accident or otherwise shall immediately be returned to the water from whence it was taken.

11. No person shall buy, sell, or expose or offer for sale, within the district to which these regulations relate, any of the salmonidse, trout, perch, or tench, or take, fish for, catch, or kill any of the salmonidse, trout, perch, or tench, in order to make sale of the same, for a period of one year from the sixteenth day of October, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six. 12. No person shall have in his possession any of the salmonidse, trout, perch, or tench during the period appointed for a close season for any such fish. 13. No person shall take, catch, or kill any perch under eight inches in length, nor shall perch be taken, caught, or killed at all, or had in possession of any person, between the first day of April and the thirtieth day of November in any year.

14. The penalty for the breach of any of these regulations shall not be less than twenty shillings or more than fifty pounds.

Regulations for Trout-fishing, under “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” South Canterbury District.

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for that part of the County of Geraldine lying to the south of the Opihi River, and the Counties of Waimate and Mackenzie, and in the waters thereof.

Regulations,

1. Licenses to fish for trout, perch, and tench in all the waters of that part of the County of Geraldine lying to the south of the Opihi River and the Counties of Waimate and Mackenzie shall be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society (hereinafter termed “ the said Acclimatisation Society ”), atTimaru, in the Provincial District of Canterbury; and for every such license a fee of £1 will be charged: Provided that it shall not be obligatory upon the said society to issue a license. 2. Every, such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish in any of the said waters from the Ist day of October in the year in which the license is issued to the 31st day of March in the year following, inclusive; but no such license shall confer any right of entry upon the land of any person without his consent. 3. Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish with one rod and line only, and with the following baits, namely, natural and artificial fly, natural and artificial minnow, silveries, bullies ( Eleotris gobioides), grasshoppers, beetles, spiders, caterpillars, creepers, grubs, and worms.

4. No person shall- use any other bait, or any method,device, or contrivance of any sort or kind (except a rod and line and landing-net or gaff) whatever for the purpose of fishing for, catching, killing, or taking trout, perch, or tench. 5. No person shall buy, sell, or expose, or offer for sale any of the salmonidse, trout, perch, or tench, or take, fish for, catch, or kill any of the salmonidse, trout, perch, or tench in order to make sale of the same.

10. No person shall take, fish for, catch, or kill in any manner whatever, or have in his possession, any salmon, salmon-parr or smolt, or the young of any salmon; and any of the above-named taken by accident or otherwise shall immediately be returned alive to the water from whence it was taken.

No person shall have in his possession any of the salmonidse, trout, perch, or tench between the Ist April and 30th September in each year, which period is hereby appointed a close season for any such fish. 12. 13. Any person committing a breach of any of these regulations shall be liable to a penalty of not less than £1 and not exceeding £SO. 14. These regulations shall come into force as from the date of the publication thereof in the New Zealand Gazette. Regulations for Trout-fishing, under “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” Waitaki District.

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for the County of Waitaki, and in the wafers thereof :—-

1. Any holder of a license may fish with rod and line for trout in all the streams and lakes within and forming the boundaries of the County of Waitaki, from the first day of October, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six, to the thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven, both inclusive.

2. Licenses to fish with rod and line in the above district will be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the Waitaki County Acclimatisation Society, at Oamaru, and for every license a fee of twenty shillings will be charged: Provided, however, that licenses will be issued to youths under fifteen years of age on payment of a fee of ten shillings. 3. No license shall authorize any person other than the person named therein to fish, and that only with rod and line.

4. Any person fishing without a license, or any person who shall, on demand of any person holding and showing a license, or on the demand of any ranger, police officer; or constable, fail to produce and show to such person, ranger, police officer, or constable his license, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds. 5. All trout not exceeding seven inches in length, taken by any person fishing as aforesaid, shall be immediately returned alive into the water ; and any person convicted of infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds sterling, and his license .shall thereupon become void.

6. Except as aforesaid, no person shall fish or use any net or other engine, instrument, or device for taking fish in any lake, river, or stream within the above district; and all persons offending against this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 7. Any person who puts, throws, or places, or allows to be put, thrown, or placed, into any lake, river, or stream in the said district, any dynamite or other explosive substance, or any matter or liquid deleterious to fish, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 8. These regulations shall come into force as from the date hereof.

Regulations under “ The Salmon a'nd Trout Act, 1867.”

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for that part of the County of Geraldine lying between and including the Rangitata River on the north, the Opihi River on the south, the sea-coast on the east, and the Mackenzie County on the west, and in the waters thereof.

Regulations

1. Licenses, to fish for trout, perch, and tench in all the waters of that part of the County of Geraldine lying between and including the Rangitata River on the north, the Opihi River on the south, the sea-coast on the east, and the Mackenzie County on the west, shall be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the Geraldine County Acclimatisation Society (hereinafter termed “ the said Acclimatisation Society ”), at Temuka, and for every such license a fee of twenty shillings will be charged : Provided that it shall not be obligatory upon the said Acclimatisation Society to issue a license.

2. Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish in any of the said waters from the first day of October in the year in which the license is issued to the thirty-first day of March in the year following inclusive, but no such license shall confer any right of entry upon the land of any person without his consent. 8. Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish,with one rod and line only, and with the following baits, namely, natural and artificial fly, natural and artificial minnows, silveries, bullies (Eleotris gobioiclcs), grasshoppers, beetles, spiders, caterpillars, creepers, grubs, and worms.

Every trout not exceeding eight inches in length taken or caught by any person shall be immediately returned alive into the water from which the same is taken.

,8. No person shall fish for, take, catch, or kill, or attempt to fish for, take, catch, or kill, in any manner whatsoever, or have in his possession, any trout, perch, or tench except during the above-mentioned period. 9. No person shall biiy, sell, or expose or offer for sale any of the salmonidce, trout, perch, or tench, or take, fish for, catch, or kill any of the saimonidse, trout, perch, or tench in order to make sale of the same.

10. No person shall take, fish for, catch, or kill in any manner whatever, or have in his possession, any salmon, salmon-parr, or smolt, or the young of any salmon; and any of the above-named taken by accident or otherwise shall immediately be returned to the water from whence it was taken.

11. No person shall have in his possession any of the saimonidse, trout, perch, or tench during the period appointed for a close season for any such fish. 12. No person shall put, throw, or place, or allow to be put, thrown or placed, in any of the waters hereinbefore mentioned, any sawdust or sawmill refuse, or anything of any kind or description whatever poisonous, deleterious, or noxious to fish.

13. No person shall put, throw, drag, draw, or place, or allow to be put, thrown, dragged, drawn, or placed, for any purpose whatever, any net of any description (except a landing-net) in any of the waters hereinbefore mentioned, or at the mouth or entrance of any such waters. 14. Any person committing a breach of any of these regulations shall be liable to a penalty of not less than one pound and not exceeding fifty pounds. 15. These regulations shall come into force as from the date of the publication thereof in the New Zealand. Gazette. IN pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for all that area in the Provincial District of Otago bounded on the East and South by the Ocean, from Shag Point to the mouth of the Mataura River; on the North-west by Lake County ; on the West and Southwest by the Mataura River ; and on the North, North-west, and North-east by the Counties of Westland and Waitaki, and in the waters thereof.

Regulations.

1. Licenses to fish for trout in all the waters within, and forming the boundaries of, the following district —viz., all that area in the Provincial District of Otago bounded on the East and South by the ocean, from Shag Point to the mouth of the Mataura River; on the West and South-west by the Mataura River ; on the North-west by Lake County ; and on the North, North-west, and North-east by the Counties of Westland and Waitaki —will be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the Otago Acclimatisation Society, at Dunedin, and for every such license a fee of twenty shillings will be charged : Provided that it shall not be obligator} 7 upon the Secretary to issue a license, 2. Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish in any of the said waters from the first day of October, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six, to the eleventh day of April, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven, inclusive, between the hours of four a.m. and ten p.m. only, but no such license shall confer any right of entry upon the land of any person without his consent. 3. No person shall fish for, take, catch, or kill, or have in his possession, or attempt to fish for, take, catch, or kill, in any manner whatever, any of the saimonidse or trout, except during the above-mentioned period. 4. Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish with one rod and line only, and with the following baits : natural or artificial fly, natural or artificial minnow, silveries, bullies, grasshoppers, spiders, caterpillars, creepers, and worms. 5. No person shall use any other bait, or any method, device, or contrivance of any sort or kind whatever, for the purpose of fishing for, taking, catching, or killing trout, except a rod and line, and a landing-net, or gaff, for fish taken with rod and line.

6. No cross-line fishing, stroke-hauling, or any other unsportsmanlike device shall be used for the purpose of taking, catching, or killing trout, nor shall any of the baits above mentioned be used with any medicated or chemical preparation whatever.

7. No person shall fish without a license, and every person fishing shall, on demand of any ranger, constable, member of the Acclimatisation Society, or person producing a license, produce and show to such ranger, member, constable, or person his license and the contents of his creel or bag, and the bait used by him for taking, catching, or killing trout.

No person shall buy, sell, or expose or offer for sale, within the district to which these- regulations relate, any of the saimonidse or trout, or take, fish for, catch, cr kill any of the saimonidse or trout, in order to make sale of the same, without permission in writing under the hand of the Secretary.

12. No person shall have in his possession any of the saimonidse or trout between the twelfth day of April and the thirtieth day of September, which period is hereby appointed a close season for all such fish. 13. No person shall put, throw, drag, draw, or place, or allow to be put, thrown, dragged, drawn, or placed, for any purpose whatever, any net of any description (except a landing-net) in any of the waters hereinbefore mentioned, or at the mouth or entrance of any such waters.

14. The penalty for the breach of any of these regulations shall not be less than forty shillings or more than fifty pounds.

15. These regulations shall come into force as from the day of the date hereof. As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this twenty-second day of September, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six.
