Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, and from Dwellings.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Wellington Hotel, Christchurch, two £5 notes and eight £1 notes; the property of Arnold Sturm. Suspicion attached to John Anderson Hunter, alias Anderson, Scotch, a labourer, fifty-two years of age, sft. 7in. or Bi'n. high, medium build, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair turning grey, bald. (See Police Gazette, 18S5, page 86.) He occupied the next room to complainant, and, when spoken to about the theft, gave him a £1 note, and then left the hotel, and has not since been seen in Christchurch.

The silver Genova watch, the property of William Stout, reported lost or stolen at the Volunteer encampment, Oamaru, has been recovered ; it was not stolen.

On the 6th or 7th instant the shop of G. Smyth, at Ashburton, was broken into, and the following stolen: Three meerschaum pipes, value ss. each ; three cherry-wood pipes, value Is. 6d. each ; a small cash-box, value Is. Gd.; and two brass window-fasteners, value Is. Gd. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 4th instant, from the person of William Millen, while drunk, at Cambridge, a silver lever hunting Waltham watch, No. 1228293, “A. W. & Co., Broadway ” on movements, a large silver chain attached ; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th instant from a tent at the railwaycamp, Te Awamutu, a pair of Kaiapoi - tweed trousers, bluish colour, and apocketbook containing 14s. 7d. and some photographs ; all value £2 ; the property of Arthur Brooking. Trousers and photographs identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man named Carter, a labourer, about thirty years of age, sft. 7in. high, rather stout build, fair beard whiskers and moustache, peculiar expression of countenance, squints slightly with both eyes. He left Te Awamutu on the 7th instant for Flamilton.

Between 11 p.m. on the Ist and 9 a.m. on the 2nd instant the public hall at Waiorongomai, near Te Aroha, was broken into, and the following stolen : Five pairs of white blankets with blue borders, value £5 15s. ; a pair of grey blankets with red border, value 17s. Gd. ; twelve cotton shirts, various patterns, value £1 10s.; a piece of brown cashmere, a piece of black cashmere, a piece of blue cashmere, and a piece of slate-coloured cashmere, between 30 and 40 yards in each piece, value £l4; 30 yards black - dress material, 30 yards brown-dress material, and 15 yards of shadycolour dress material, value £2 Bs. 9d. ; two pieces of brown satin, about 5 yards in each piece, value £1 10s.; twelve

men’s black soft felt hats, value £2 14s. ; a man’s grey-tweed suit, value £1 10s.; two men’s dark-tweed coats, value £2 10s.; about 40 yards of skirt-lining, value 13s. ; a remnant of print, value 3s. ; 60 yards of white flannel, value £3 ; twelve silk pocket-handkerchiefs, value 155.; and twelve pairs of socks, value 125.; the property of Nathan Basser. Identification doubtful if private marks are removed.

Stolen during the night of the 30th ultimo, from the Gisborne Club, Gisborne, a double-breasted white twill waterproof riding-coat, very long, small straps on inside of skirts to fasten round legs, an ink-stain on left arm, white-bone buttons ; the property of M. McDonald; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the Temuka Hotel, Temuka, a silver albert watch-chain, curb pattern, a fourpenny piece attached; the property of H. Cutten; value 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to three youths who stayed at the hotel the previous night. One of them, is named Eoscoe, eighteen years of age, about sft. 6in. high, dark hair and complexion ; wore a blue overcoat; had been in the Burnham Industrial School. The other two, whose names are unknown, are about seventeen years of age, and sft. 4in. high ; wore dark clothes. It it supposed they have also been in the Burnham Industrial School. They went towards Christchurch.

Stolen on the 9th or 10th instant, from the dwelling of Charles Morganti, Pukerua, Wellington District, a plain heavy gold wedding-ring with “ E. K. L. Cardinale ” engraved on inside ; value £2 ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Prank Maitland, a native of Jamaica, looks like a quadroon, seventeen years of age,, about sft. 7in. high, slight build, dark hair and eyes, large mouth, thick lips ; usually wears grey-tweed clothes, smart appearance, well educated. He is in the employment of a butcher at Paikakariki. His mother is married to Goosey, who drives a coach at Opunake.

At 1.30 a.m. on the 14th instant the dwelling of Eobert Henry McKenzie, Mount Erin, Hawke’s Bay District, was burglariously entered, and the following stolen: A silver lever hunting-watch, maker P. Cohen, London, No. 70978; a steel chain, a light-grey Bannockburn paget-coat, and a vest, about half-worn ; all value £9. Identifiable. A man of whom no description can be obtained was seen in the house.

Stolen on the 11th ultimo, from the shop-door of Samuel Eabbidge, Dee Street, Invercargill, a ladies’ black Italiancloth skirt, trimmed with red silk round the bottom ; value 14s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 11th instant, from the shop-door of James Hardie, Eattray Street, Dunedin, a pair of ladies’ elasticside kid boots, size 5, value ss. 6d.; a pair of ladies’ leather slippers, with elastic in front, size 5, value ss. 6d.; and a pair of men’s blue-carpet slippers, size 10, value 6s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 3rd and 10th ultimo, from the bar of the Princess Hotel, Molesworth Street, Wellington, a brownpaper parcel containing two gentlemen’s black evening dress-coats, and a frock-coat, nearly new; the property of P. W. Howlett. Identifiable.

Between 8.80 and 10.30 p.m. on the 11th instant the dwelling of William Haddock, at Paramata, Wellington District,, was broken into and ransacked, but nothing was stolen. All the glass in the bedroom-window was maliciously broken.

Between 10 p.m. on the Ist and 8 a.m. on the 3rd instant the shop of Duncan McKenzie, Thames Street, Oamaru, was broken into, and about 4s. in coppers and a shilling’s worth of confectionery stolen.

Stolen on the 12th or 13th ultimo, from the person of Francis Scott, while drunk, at Auckland, a ladies’ double-case silver watch, maker’s name and number not known, filigreework on case, and a gold chain, small-link pattern, with a Maltese cross, attached; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th ultimo, from the British Hotel, Auckland, a black-leather portmanteau, containing a boys’ blueserge suit; the property of William Porter; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the shop-door of W. H. Flockton, Manners Street, Wellington, a nickle-plated chainbit, curb-pattern ; value 4s. 6d. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the dwelling of William Doran, at the Pleads, Wanganui, an English silver lever hunting-watch, maker’s name not known, No. 47369, considerably worn and out of repair, a rusty-steel chain, roundlink pattern, attached ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from a brothel off King Street, Dunedin, a silver Geneva hunting-watch, maker’s name and number not known, and a silver albert chain, cable pattern; the property of Donald Gow; value £1 15s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, between twenty and twenty-five years of age; wore dark clothes. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the shop-door of Charles Johnson, Maclaggan Street, Dunedin, a girls’ navy-blue dress, heavy material, trimmed with scarlet material about 6 inches deep round skirt, and a scarlet bow on back; value 6s. lid. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from a dwelling at Waverley, a dark-tweed coat; the property of Patrick Keenan; value £1 ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Matthew Flynn, an old soldier, about fifty years of age, sft. Bin. high, stout build, grey hair, dark complexion, blind of left eye ; wore light-tweed coat, light-moleskin trousers, and light-felt hat. He went towards Wanganui.

Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of John Henry Sellars, at Pihama : The cash-box and photographs have been recovered. They were found by Constable John Twomey, Opunake Police, in a gorse-hedge near Mr. Sellar’s house.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the shop-door of A. C. Pritchard, at Ashburton, a blue nap-cloth overcoat, lined with blue Italian cloth, four outside pockets, seven buttons on front; value £1 ss. Identification doubtful.

Between 11 p.m. on the Bth and 6 a.m. on the 9th instant the dwelling of William Knight, Big Bush, near Clive, was broken into, and the following stolen: About 10s. in silver, a long silk purse, a leather purse, and a number of letters. The purses and the letters, except two, have since been found on the avenue leading to Mr. Knight’s house. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, about sft. 6in. high ; wore a long-tailed black coat and hard dark-felt hat. He was seen at 10.30 p.m. on the Bth instant standing on the road in front of the house.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from a bedroom in the Governor Bowen Hotel, Thames, Bs. or 9s. in silver, and a gentleman’s, gold signet-ring, with bloodstone, “ 18ct.” marked on inside of ring ; the property of John Opie ; value £2 10s. Eing identifiable. Suspicion attached to two men who were staying at the hotel. First, is Irish, about thirtyfive years of age, sft. 6in. high, clean-shaved except fair moustache ; wore dark-grey tweed suit and hard black hat; a monkey-pool man at race-meetings. Second, a bookmaker, about twenty-six years of age, sft. lOin. high, small dark sidewhiskers and moustache ; wore dark clothes, a gold ring on finger with two or three stones which looked like diamonds, and a large square silver pendant to watch-chain. They left the Thames by the steamer “ Enterprise ” on the evening of the 6th instant.

Stolen on the 15th ultimo, from the person of Patrick McCurry, at Christchurch, a silver Waltham watch, number not known, “ Patrick McCurry ” scratched on inside of case ; value £B. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who offered the watch for sale on the day it was stolen. Description; Irish, about thirty-five years of age, sft. 9in. high, stout build, clean-shaved except moustache and goatee. Identifiable.

Between 5 p.m. on the 19th and 8 a.m. on the 20th instant a house in Hill Street, Wellington, was broken into, and the following stolen: A hand-saw, a hammer with BO on handle, and a smoothing-plane with “ Bailey ” marked thereon ; the property of Bobert Clarke ; value £l. Identifiable.

On the 9th instant the shop of John Bendell, Pitt Street, Auckland, was broken iuto, and the following stolen: An open-face silver Geneva watch, No. 3275, a little ornamental work on centre of dial, value £2; and about Bd. in coppers. Watch identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the dwelling of Mitchell Nisbet, at Tauranga, a nearly-new blue single blanket and two white single blankets, well worn; value 11s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the shop of Joseph Wilkinson, at Botorua, a single-breasted dark-tweed coat with yellow dots through material, size 5, a pocket at each side and an inside left-breast pocket, five buttons on front; and a single-breasted vest of same material, a watch-pocket on left breast; value £1 12s. Identification doubtful. Maoris suspected.

Stolen about 3 a.m. on the 12th instant, from a bedroom in the Club Hotel, Masterton, a brown leather poeketbook with “F. Turner” written on inside, containing two £lO notes, three £5 notes, £8 in £1 notes and silver, a life-in-surance policy, and sundry papers, with the owner’s name thereon; the property of Frederick Turner. Poeketbook and papers identifiable. Suspicion attached to Patrick Shine, alias Sullivan, alias Maher, alias Sheen, who was staying at the hotel. He is now wearing a brown beard and moustache, cheeks shaved, and has two suits of clothes, one a darkslioddy tweed suit with small white spots through material, the other a black-cloth paget-coat and vest, well worn, a pair of broad-striped light-tweed trousers, and a new round soft black-felt hat. When travelling he usually carries a walkingstick and a carpet-bag. He was arrested for the offence, but was discharged. He left Masterton by the 2 p.m. train on the 21st instant for Carterton.

Stolen on the 18th instant, from the shop-door of James Gilmour, at Parnell, near Auckland, a ladies’ black-stockinet jacket trimmed with astrakhan with braid on top, round black buttons down front; value £l. Identifiable.
