Deserting Wives and Families, &c.
Thomas McLaren is charged on warrant of commitment to Oamaru Gaol for forty-eight hours’ labour, issued by the Oamaru Bench, in default of paying a fine of 10s. for being disorderly in licensed premises, and refusing to leave the premises when requested by the licensee. Description: An old soldier, about fifty-five years of age, sft. llin. high, fresh complexion, a pearl on one of eyes (supposed the left), full sandy beard whiskers and moustache, erect gait. He is supposed to have gone South.
William Charles Vince is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with deserting his wife and family, at Auckland, since the 3rd February last. Description : English, a carpenter, about twenty-seven years of age, sft. Bin. high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, clean-shaved except moustache, ring tattooed on middle finger of left hand, and cross on right hand near thumb; dressed in navy-blue serge suit and soft black-felt hat. He was last heard of at Wellington. His mother lives in John Street, Wellington.
William Edward Stone is charged, on warrant issued by the Sydney Bench, with deserting his wife, at Sydney, early in February last. Description: A ship-carpenter, thirty-five years of age, 6ft. high, stout build, dark complexion, dark hair whiskers and moustache, chin shaved. He is said to have left Sydney for Palmerston South, where he has relatives named Ryan and Byrne. He may go thence to Auck-
land, with the intention of shipping as a carpenter to San Francisco, He has left his wife and child destitute. If found he might be induced to make some arrangement for their support, and thus save the cost of his escort to Sydney. Inquiry has been made for him at Palmerston South, but he cannot be found there.

Robert McNally, charged on warrant with neglecting to provide for the support of his children in the Burnham Industrial School, has been arrested by Detective Austin Kirby, Timaru Police, and ordered to pay 15s. per week towards their support, or in default two months’ imprisonment.
(See Police Gazette, 1886, page 58.) William Charles Bishop charged on warrant with deserting his wife and child, has been arrested by Constable Arthur Pickering, Hastings Police, and remanded to Ashburton.
