James Beady, alias Mcßrearty, alias Johnston, charged on warrant with having obtained £5 from George Holmes, at Westport, by means of a valueless cheque, has been arrested by Detective L. D. Benjamin, Wanganui Police. He has been committed for trial at Wanganui on three charges of false pretences committed there.
On the Ist or 2nd instant twelve posts and four rails, value £2, which protected two culverts at Seafield, near Ashburton, the property of the Ashburton County Council, were maliciously destroyed apparently with an axe.
(See Police Gazette 1886, page 68.) The warrant issued by the Featherston Bench for the arrest of Edward Burke, for having threatened to do bodily harm to Simon Chisholm, has been cancelled.
Edwakd J. Taylok is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with having, on the 15th instant, at Christchurch, obtained two drinks and £5 19s. from Margaret Bertie by means of a valueless cheque. Description: English, a clerk, about forty years of age, about sft. llin. high, slight active build, fresh complexion, sharp features, light-brown hair, clean-shaved except small fair moustache; generally wears brown-tweed paget-suit and hard black hat; addicted to drink. He was formerly a clerk in the Lyttelton Times office. He was seen in Christchurch on the 19th instant.
On the 13th instant, at Onehunga, the hair was maliciously cut off the tails of two horses, the property of Samuel Goosman and Philip Rosser.
