Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Ko Maki is charged, on warrant issued by the Kawakawa Bench, with stealing, on the 22nd May last, from the dwelling of Thomas C. Grant, at Ruapekapeka, a pair of trousers, a bridle, two girths, and a bag containing sundry articles; value £4 10s. Identifiable. Description: A Maori, about twenty-five years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, medium

build, large prominent lips, smart appearance. Supposed to be in the King country. His father lives at Ruapekapeka.

Stolen between 10 p.m. on the 24th and 11 a.m. on the 29tli ultimo, from a bedroom in the Commercial Hotel, Auckland, a silver Geneva hunting-watch and a gold chain ; value £lO, since recovered; the property of Edward Qualtrough. The property was subsequently pawned at Levy’s pawn office by a girl, who gave her name as Williamson, which may be a fictitious name. Description: About fifteen years of age, tall, slight build, fair hair; wore dark-merino dress. Identification doubtful.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing, on the 9th instant, from the shop of William Sherlock, Oxford Terrace, Christchurch, an American cane-chair, value 7s. 6d., since recovered. Description: English, said he was a draper, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, dark blotchy complexion as if from drink, dark eyes, very red nose, close-shaved except small dark side-whiskers. Identifiable. He sold the chair on the day it was stolen at a second-hand dealer’s shop.

Stolen on the 10th or 1 Ith instant, from the dwelling of Frederick Carrington, at Havelock, Hawke’s Bay, four £1 notes, two half-sovereigns, and 15s. in silver.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from the Clarendon Hotel, Napier, a grey-tweed overcoat, with plaid lining, two outside breast patch-pockets, fly button-holes ; the property of William Henry Fordham ; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the sth instant, from a bedroom in the Clyde Hotel, Wairoa, eight or nine £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand; the property of John Fraser.

Stolen about the 4th instant, from a tent at the railwayworks, Coleman’s Camp, Punui, near Kihikihi, a red-morocco purse with three compartments and clasp, containing two £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, and about £1 in silver; the property of James Mclntyre. Purse identifiable.

Stolen between the 2nd and 18th ultimo, from the whare of A. and R. Nixson, at Waipu, Auckland District, seven £1 notes, a sovereign, and a half-sovereign.

James Dungan, alias Malcolm Christian, suspected of stealing a watch and chain from the Prebbleton Hotel, Prebbleton, the property of Robert John Rutledge, has been arrested by Constable Andrew Morgan, Hurunui Police, and committed for trial. Stolen on the Ist instant, from a bedroom in the Victoria Dining-rooms, Victoria Street, Auckland, a gold open-face lever watch with gold dial, maker’s name and number not known, value £ls; and about 24 yards of white-silk dressmaterial, value £7; the property of Thomas Quoi. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from a chest of drawers in a bedroom in the Victoria Dining-rooms, Victoria Street, Auckland, a cash-box containing about £7O in notes, gold, and silver, a gold dollar-coin -with a small ring attached, gentlemen's gold ring with large diamond in claw-setting, a massive gold ring with imitation diamond, and some deeds and receipts ; the property of Thomas Quoi. Identifiable •except money. The cash-box was found empty on the following morning.

Breaking into and stealing from the store of Burton Charles Lawrence, at Waitara : The saddle has been recovered, but the stirrup-leathers and irons and one of the girtbs have not been recovered. It was found secreted in Lcpper’s Bush, about five miles from Waitara.

Stolen on the 11th instant, from a dwelling at Brunswick Line, Wanganui, a dark-tweed coat and vest, the property of William Mann, value £1 15s; and two pairs of dark woollen knitted socks, the property of John Sullivan, value ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Alfred Sullivan, a sailor and labourer, about twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout build, very dark complexion, black hair, no hair on face except dark moustache; wore dark-knitted jacket, dark trousers, and blue-cloth stitched hat. He has not been long in the colony. Supposed to have gone in the direction of New Plymouth.

Stolen on the 19th instant, from the person of Martin Jolmsen, while asleep in the Lyttelton Hotel, Lyttelton, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Stanton, number 3972, and a 9-carat gold chain, round-link pattern, a large and small link alternately ; value £l4. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th or 19th instant, from the City Buffet Hotel, Wellington, a black-cloth overcoat, lined with blacktwilled silk, sleeves lined with striped satin, the chief colour being yellow, lining of one sleeve torn; the property of Oswald Spottiswoode Brodie ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the dwelling of Charles Gee Smyth, Kent Terrace, Wellington, a ladies’ blackmorocco hand-bag, about 8 inches long, with silver-plated fastening, containing a dark-leather purse, three sovereigns, about 10s. in silver, three tickets in Price’s bean competition, and a ticket in Webley, Clark, and Rive’s peppercorn competition, with Mrs. Smyth’s name and address written thereon ; value £4. Bag and purse identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from an office at the soap- and candle-works, Otahuhu, a new silver lever hunting-watch, makers International Watch Company, No. 15298, a leather boot-lacc attached ; the property of Edward Haydon ; value £3 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 4th and 9th instant, from a bedroom at the Gear Meat Company’s premises, Lambton Quay, Wellington, a ladies’ silver Geneva hunting-watch, maker Urquart, Christchurch, number not known, and a goldmounted hair-guard, with gold stirrup and. seal attached; the property of Arthur Marsden ; value £B. Identifiable.

On the 2nd or 3rd instant the warehouse of W. S. Laurie and Co., Customs Street, Auckland, was broken into and the following stolen : A tin cash-box about 8 by 5 by 2£ inches, containing 19s. in silver, two Is. postage-stamps, and 4s. 6d. worth of 6d. and Id. stamps, a petty cash-book, a small key, and a large-bladed knife with small nail-file at opposite end to blade, and mother-o’-pearl handle. Identifiable except stamps and money.

Stolen about the 3rd instant, from a tent at the railwaycamp, Puriri, near Thames, a nearly-new double-cased silver lever watch, No. 113, maker’s name not known, “ Boston ” scratched on inside of case ; the property of John Prendergast; value £5. Identifiable.

The postage-stamps stolen from the bar of the hotel of William Balmforth, at Patea, have been traced by Constable Sparko, Patea Police, to the possession of Alfred E. Y. Pearson, nine and a half years of age, who was convicted of the offence, and committed to the Auckland Industrial School until he attains the age of fifteen years.

At 1.30 a.m. on the 6th instant an attempt was made to burglariously enter the dwelling of Eli Hurslion, Clyde Quay, Wellington. A tin billycan and a common white-china cup were stolen at the time from the yard of the house ; value 2s. Identification doubtful.

Between 5 p.m. on the 25th and 8 a.m. on the 26th ultimo the office of the Brick and Tile Company, near the railway-wharf, Auckland, was broken into, and four cigars and a cake of tobacco, value 2s. 6d., stolen.

Stolen between 6 p.m. on the 21st and 4 p.m. on the 23rd ultimo, from the Commercial Hotel, Auckland, a blackfrieze overcoat, value £2, since recovered ; the property of J. McLean. The coat was subsequently pawned at Asher’s pawn office by a man who gave his name as William Burgoyne, which may be a fictitious name. Description: About

twenty-one years of age, medium height, florid complexion, clean-shaved except dark moustache ; respectable appearance. Identification doubtful.

Stolen between the 7th and 23rd ultimo, from the Com mercial Hotel, Auckland, a new black mackintosh overcoat the property of T. Grice ; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from a bedroom in the Albion Hotel, Napier, five £1 notes ; the property of Frank Judge.

On the 17th instant the dwelling of John Bellyse Baker, St. John’s Hill, Wanganui, was broken into and the following stolen : Two ladies’ gold rings, one with six rubies and three pearls, and crystal set in tire other; two silver saltspoons, with SH engraved on back of handles ; a pair of silver-earrings, about the size of a sixpence, with AIE in monogram engraved thereon; and a ladies’ old broken gold ring set with five garnets ; value £8 10s. Gd. Identifiable.
