Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Thomas Lawson, alias Roberts, charged with stealing a watch from the person of James Stewart, has been arrested by Acting-Sergeant Christopher Conn, Palmerston South Police, remanded to Invercargill, and sentenced to fourmonths’ labour.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the hut of George Burt, at Hayland’s Station, Canterbury District, a pair of leggings which reaches to the thighs, a pair of heavy boots with nails up to heels, a black-and-white-print-pattern shirt, two merino singlets with red border and red buttons, a brown-tweed coat, a pair of brown-tweed trousers, a grey-tweed vest, a black soft felt hat with blue lining, a grey blanket with purple- and rainbow-coloured border, a rug made of an old blanket and lined with grey print, a white-and-blue-spotted neckerchief, a white neckerchief, a butchers’ knife branded ALB, a looking-glass which closes up, a small broken comb, and a red hankerchicf. Nearly all identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, known as “ Bill,” who left the station on the 27th ultimo, saying he was going to Amberley. Description: Twenty years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, black hair with a tuft standing up on forehead, no hair on face, brown eyes, aquiline nose, dark complexion, freckled on cheeks; dressed in a light brown-coat, black wideawake hat, and red-and-yellow scarf. His clothes were shabby, but he may be wearing some of the clothes stolen. He may have gone to Rangiora or Amberley.

James Exley is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with stealing, between G p.m. on the 19th and 5 a.m. on the 22nd ultimo, from the dwelling of King Lee, at Anderson’s Bay, a yellow-leather purse, value Is., containing six £1 notes and Is. Purse identifiable. Description: English, eighteen years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, fair hair, no hair on face; wore grey-tweed suit and soft black-felt hat.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from a hut near Gore, two £1 notes, about 10s. in silver, and a nearly-new pair of light

lace-up boots; the property of William Haines; value £l. Money not identifiable, identification of boots doubtful.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the shop of William Fletcher, Taianaki Street, Wellington, a small white wooden cash-box with two holes in lid through which to pass money, containing about £1 in silver and coppers. Cash-box supposed identifiable.

Stealing an overcoat at Westport, the property of Michael Carrick : Matthew Sliarpley has been arrested for this offence by Constable Thomas Drake, Lyttelton Police, remanded to Westport, and sentenced to fourteen days’ labour. The coat was found in his possession.

Stolen about the 11th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Manawatu Hote-l, Foxton, a nearly-new pair of Kaiapoi tweed trousers, yellow-and-black-mixture pattern, and a pair of mens’ elastic-side boots ; the property of a man named Jansen or Johnston ; value £2. Supposed identifiable.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the brothel of Cecilia Jacobsen, Wingfield Street, Wellington, two womens’ brownsilk umbrellas ; value 15s. 6d. each. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 17th or 18th ultimo, from the dwelling of Harriet Waterman, Thorndon Quay, Wellington, a silverplated American clock, with brass ring on top ; value 12s. 6d. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the shop of Ann Olson, Riddiford Street, Wellington, about Bs. in coppers, a fruitbasket, 6 by 8 inches, and two bottles of lemonade.

Between 9.30 p.m. on the 20th and 10 a.m. on the 21st ultimo the Salvation Army Barracks, Taranaki Street, Wellington, was broken into, and three collection-boxes, which were in a cupboard, broken open, and the contents, consisting of silver and coppers, stolen; two penknives, with red handles, marked “ Salvation Army,” and a red comb, similarly marked, value ss. 6d., were also stolen ; the property of Ella McMillan. Identifiable except money.

Stolen on the 16th June last, from the Masonic Hotel, Auckland, a ladies’ massive silver necklet, cable-pattern, with a large oval silver locket with EF in monogram on front attached; and a pair of round silver earrings with a yellow stone in centre of each; the property of Isabella Fraser; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th June last, from the shop-door of James J. Austin, Union Street, Auckland, a large black-oilskin overcoat, button-holes bound with leather; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th ultimo, from the shop-door of the New Zealand Clothing Factory Company, Wanganui, a man’s brown-cardigan jacket; value 9s. 6d. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the dwelling of William O’Hagan, Taylorville, Brunner ton, an open-face silver Geneva watch, made at Liverpool, maker’s name not known, No. 7663 ; a colonial gold albert guard with gold locket attached ; an old English silver hunting-watch, number and maker’s name not known; a colonial gold ring, with WH within, diamond-marked on outside; and about ss. in silver; value about £2O. Geneva watch and ring identifiable.

Stolen on or about the 11th ultimo, from the Junction Hotel, Oamaru, a nearly-new light-brown-tweed waterproof overcoat, with dark-composition buttons; the property of John Wilson; value £1 15s. Identification doubtful. Stolen also at the same time a dark overcoat, since recovered, the property of Arthur Proctor; value £1 10s. Mr. Proctor’s coat was sold on the 11th ultimo, by a man, name unknown, to a dealer at Oamaru. Description : Supposed Irish, looked like a labourer, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair fresh complexion, light-brown hair, sandy beard whiskers and moustache. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 16th or 17th ultimo, from the shop of Harry Townsend and Charles Sowman, Market Street South, Blenheim, a meerschaum pipe with bowl in hand-setting, stem slightly bent, amber mouthpiece, value £2 105. ; a meerschaum cigarette-holder with imitation of nude woman on back, amber mouthpiece, value 125. ; and a small case containing an imitation-meerschaum pipe with stem and bowl detached,

and an imitation-meerschaum cigar-holder and cigarette holder; value 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen between 5 p.m. on the 18th and 8 a.m. on the 20th ultimo, from the office of Messrs. Smith and Smith, Octagon, Dunedin, Bs. in silver and 2d. in coppers.

Stolen on the 16th or 17th ultimo, from the shop-door of Messrs. Carter and Co., George Street, Dunedin, a brownishgrey woollen shawl with fringe of same colour, and a steelgrey woollen shawl with fringe of same colour; both value £1 ss. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the shop-door of A. and T. Inglis, George Street, Dunedin, a double-breasted black-german-cloth dolman ulster, trimmed with black-silk braid, twelve black-silk cord buttons on front; value £1 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 11th or 12th ultimo, from David Smith’s boarding-house, Makatoku, Hawke’s Bay District, a doublebarrel muzzle-loading gun, left barrel rifle-bored, and sighted for 100, 200, and 300 yards, a safety-plug in each barrel, two rings for sling; the property of William Smith; value £7. Identifiable.

Stealing from the tent of Arasmus I worsen, at Waimate: One of the gold nuggets was found in the possession of Alfred Perkins, arrested on the 11th ultimo by Constable Michael Fitzpatrick, Waimate Police, for drunkenness. He said he purchased the nugget when drunk, about six weeks previously, from a man whom he could not describe. As there was no evidence against him beyond the possession of the nugget, he was discharged.

Between 4.20 p.m. on the 18th and 3 p.m. on the 19th ultimo the office of Messrs. Thomson and Co., Moray Place, Dunedin, was broken into and the following stolen: About 6s. in silver; a pair of gold-mounted greenstone earrings, about H inches long, value £1 55.; a ladies’ 18-carat gold ring, set with a sapphire and pearl, value £2; and a small mahogany watch-case, lined with blue velvet, value ss. Identifiable' except money.

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Railway Hotel, Wanganui, a ladies’ large silver open-face Geneva watch, No. 41289, maker’s name not known, a silver guard, round-link pattern, broken in two places and fastened with wire, a silver tassel, a gold locket, a shilling, a fourpenny piece, and a threepenny piece attached; the property of Elizabeth Webberley ; value £2 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Matilda Hill, who was employed as cook in the hotel at the time. Description : Irish, thirty-two years of ago, about 5 feet 3 inches high, stout build, dark wavy hair, florid complexion. She is still in Wanganui.

Stolen on the 28tli ultimo, from the shop of Abraham Cass, Willis Street, Wellington, 20 yards of Rob Roy check, red-and-black squares about an inch large, a ticket marked h/o attached; value £1 13s. 4d. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the shop of Charles Lake, Upper Willis Street, Wellington, a till containing about 10s. in silver and coppers, a Government Life Insurance book, and a Ladies’ Christian Association case.

Stolen on the 27th or 28th ultimo, from the tent of Alexander Faulkner, at Pukerua, Wellington Distinct, three £1 notes and 15s. in silver.
