Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stealing gold chains from the box of Charles Crowther, at Urvvin’s Hotel, Pahautanui, or at Prosser’s Hotel, Porirua : The second gold chain has been recovered, and traced to the possession of Henry Thomas Eddlestone, alias Edwards, alias Allen, for whose arrest for the offence a warrant has been issued by the Wellington Bench. Description: English, a billiard-marker, about twenty-five years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, clean-shaved except moustache; when last seen wore dark sac-coat, grey-tweed trousers, soft blaclc-felt hat, and watertight boots. He was recently employed in a store at Featherston. He left Wellington on the 23rd ultimo, supposed for the Wairarapa.

Stolen on the 11th ultimo, from the Canterbury Club, Christchurch, a nearly-new pepper-and-salt-coloured tweed waterproof overcoat, and a pair of gloves, lined with fur; the property of Alexander Rose. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the shop-door of Tone Duck, Fleet Street, Dunedin, a brown-worsted cardigan jacket, a pocket on each side, eight buttons on front; value 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 24th or 25th ultimo, from the dwelling of Marion Keith, at Bavensbourne, near Dunedin, an openfaced gold English lever-watch, steel hands, a small dent in case near swivel, no glass, maker’s name and number not known ; value £5 10s. Identifiable.

On the 22nd ultimo the shop of Paul Louis, at Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen: A greenstone ring with a square of greenstone on top like a signet, a gold hoop on inside of ring ; value £3. Identifiable.

Between 9 and 10 p.m. on the 21st ultimo the railway office at Huntly, Auckland District, the property of the Government, was broken into, and a drawer in the office broken open and ransacked, but nothing was stolen.

Between 8 and 9 p.m. on the 21st ultimo the dwelling of George Smith, at Huntly, Auckland District, was broken into, and a writing-desk containing papers taken outside the house and broken open, but none of the contents were stolen.

Stolen between the 14th and 16th ultimo, from the store of F. W. Knight and Co., at Waipon, about 301 b. of nailrod tobacca; value £9. Identification doubtful.

Between 4 p.m. on the 21st and 1 p.m. on the 22nd ultimo the store of H. Glover, at Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : Eighteen small meerschaum ciga-rette-holders with amber mouthpieces, six light-brown leather purses, about one hundred and fifty cigars, and a number of cigarettes; value £2 17s. Cd.

Between 9 p.m. on the 18th and 8 a.m. on the 19th ultimo the shop of Messrs. Hart and Levy, at Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen: A necklace made of old silver coins, size sixpence to a shilling, principally of the reign of Queen Anno; eight silver buttons made of similar coins, a silver pint jug, chased, the gilding on inside rather dark; a heavy hoop-pattern gold ring with large square diamond, three gold shirt-studs with six small diamonds in a cluster in each, and a large gold oval brooch, supposed with a small diamond in centre ; value about £l2O or £l3O. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Railway Coffee Palace, Queen Street, Auckland, a nearly-new shepherds’-plaid pair of trousers, small check pattern, a button

out of fly, a pair of braces attached; the property of Charles Johnson; value £1 ss. Identifiable. Also a nearly-new black diagonal-cloth sac-coat, a small piece of material torn out of top button, and a new dark-grey cloth overcoat with belt; the property of Charles Olsen; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 15th and 21st ultimo, from the dwelling of August Main, at Tokatea, Coromandel, a black-leather pocketbook, about 6 inches long, with elastic band, containing three or four £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand. Pocketbook identifiable.

Between 5 p.m. on the 14th and 8.30 a.m. on the 16th ultimo the shop of Thomas Turner, Colombo Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen: About ss. in silver, 2s. or 3s. in copper, and 19s. worth of twopenny postage-stamps.

Stolen on the 17th or 18th ultimo, from the Albion Hotel, Invercargill, a light-brownish tweed dress-coat, “ H. Cook, Hobart,” on strap at collar, value £2 10s. ; a brown-wator-proof overcoat, partly worn, value £1 10s.; and a pair of dark-brown leather gloves, value 65.; the property of Christopher Basstian, sen. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the dwelling of Mary McAdam, Duncan Street, Dunedin, a dark-blue tweed-water-proof overcoat, value £2 10s. ; a black twill' coat, value £3 ; three flannel shirts, about half worn, value 65.; a pair of new lace-up boots, value £1 Is. ; a red table-cover, value 65.; two white-handled table-knives, value 35.; and of tea, value 4s. Identifiable, except tea. The black-twill coat has been recovered. It was pledged at the Ballarat Pawn Office, on the day it was stolen, by a man who gave the name of John Lowther, of whom no description can be obtained.

Stolen on the 10th ultimo, from the dwelling of George Sim, Mercury Bay, Auckland, an English silver lever hunt-ing-watch, “ Alexander Gill ” on face, number not known, ARG on outside of case, a silver chain attached; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 23rd and 26th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Lyttelton Hotel, Lyttelton, a nearly-new hairstripe light-brown sac-coat, size 4; the property of William Moynihan; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 16th ultimo, from the shop of Thomas Craig, Upper Queen Street, Auckland, eighteen square tin black trays, 18 by 12 inches, gold edges ; value 18s. Identifiable.

Between the 21st and 23rd ultimo the shop of George Daye, Colombo Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen; A twopenny copper piece, about a hundred years old; about 2s. 6d. in threepenny and sixpenny pieces, a package of cartridges, small size, and a six-barrelled electro-plated revolver ; value £2 ss. The copper piece supposed identifiable.

Stealing from the dwelling of Mrs. Lister-Kaye, at Longwood, near Featherston : The head of a gold scarf-pin, with a ruby in centre of five diamonds, chased round edge, value about £6 ; and a very large brown-cloth overcoat, ulster pattern, considerably worn, value about £2, were stolen at the same time. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 13th April last, from the Canterbury Club, Christchurch, a dark pilot-cloth overcoat with velvet collar; the property of E. G. Wright; value £5 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen between 5 and 7 p.m. on the 14th ultimo, from the Canterbury Club, Christchurch, a dark-tweed singlebreasted overcoat, since recovered; value £3 ; the property of A. M. Ollivier. The coat was sold the same night, for 10s., at Cohen’s pawn office, Colombo Street, by a man who gave his name as William Jerrard, which is supposed to be a fictitious name. Description: English, about twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, clean-shaved ; wore dark clothes and soft cloth hat. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from the dwelling of George Morgan, Dee Street, Invercargill, a silver lever huntingwatch, maker A. Myers, Princes Street, Dunedin, No. 2300,

value £8 ; a dark-hair guard and a steel albert guard attached, value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the tent of David Lawrence, at Ormaglade Station, Roxburgh, three hundred dried rabbitsltins ; value £2 10s.
