Horse- and Cattle-Stealing.

Tui Mei is charged, on warrant issued by the Hew Plymouth Bench, with having, on the 12th April last, at New Plymouth, stolen a bay horse,‘value £5, since recovered; the property of Tui Aworiki. Description: A Maori, about twenty-five years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, cast in right eye, small black beard whiskers and moustache ; wore black-serge coat, dirty white-moleskin trousers, and soft black-felt hat; speaks very good English. He sold the horse to Thomas Giles, at Inglewood.

The heifer, the property of William Ryan, reported stolen from Waikerikeri Valley, near Clyde, has been found straying. Cows answering the description of the two reported stolen were recently seen at Hills Creek. It is now believed that the cattle were not stolen.

Joseph Hurrel is charged, on warrant issued by the Coalgate Bench, with stealing, on the 25th ultimo, at Hororata, Canterbury, a sheep, value 145.; the property of Samuel Bealey. Description : English, a ploughman and shepherd, thirty years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, brown hair, sandy beard whiskers and moustache, lame in right leg ; wore a yellowish coat and vest, grev-tweed trousers, drab wideawake hat, and white mackintosh ; had in his possession two sheep-dogs, one yellow and the other black; he may be riding a dark-bay mare, branded A on near shoulder. He is supposed to be still in the Sheffield or Hororata Subdistricts, or he may have gone to the Mackenzie Country.

Supposed stolen during the night of the 6th instant, from Shirley Road, St. Albans, Christchurch, a chestnut horse, about 14 hands high, white face, fore legs white, small white spots on neck and back, unbranded ; the property of Edward Chamberlain; value about £5. Identifiable.

John Smith is charged with the larceny as a bailee, on or about the 20th Novemher last, at Fairlie Creek, South Canterbury, of a bay-pony mare, four years old, branded B on near shoulder, a little white on one of her off-hind fetlocks ; the property of John McLean; value £lO. Identifiable. Description: Supposed a native of Temuka, a shearer, between twenty-three and twenty-five years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, rather stout build, dark complexion and eyes, dark hair, clean-shaved, slightly bow-legged. He was recently seen at Geraldine. No warrant has been issued in this case, but it is stated that complainant will obtain one when the accused’s whereabouts is known.
