(From Police Gazette, sth and 12th December, 1883, pages 201 and 204.)
The New Zealand Constabulary are requested to make immediate inquiry for Michael Hands, referred to in the following extracts from the Western Australia Police Gazette, and, should he be found, or any information respecting him obtained, to at once report the matter to the Commissioner of Constabulary, Wellington. Officers in charge qf sub-districts will cause immediate inquiry to be made as to the present whereabouts of Michael Hands, exp., late 7716. Description: Slight, age fifty-four years, 5 feet high, brown hair, hazel eyes, oval visage, sallow complexion, two ink-marks on left arm. Result of inquiries to be forwarded to the Detective Office, Perth, without delay. —AI/0297. Murder. —On the 25th ultimo, while two men, named Eli Prim and George Russell, were employed in making some excavations to erect a manger in a building attached to a dwellinghouse known as Stokes Station, Wanneroo, they came upon some human remains, which, upon removal and examination by the police and Colonial Surgeon, proved to be those of an adult male, apparently about forty-five years of age. The remains were about 2 feet below the surface, and had evidently been buried with the clothes on, as the boots were still on the feet, and decayed clothing was found on the body. The iron handle of a cross-cut saw dropped from the skull when it was removed from the ground. A pocket-knife, a threepenny piece, and a match-box were also found. These remains are supposed to be those of Michael Hands, exp., late 7716, who resided in the house, about the year 1880 (and has not since been heard of), with a man named Edward Jenkinson, who has been arrested on suspicion of having caused his death.
