Missing Friends.
Special inquiry is requested to be made for Samuel Timaru, alias Darkey Sam, a negro, a cook or waiter, about twentyfive or thirty years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, short black curly hair, and small black moustache, said to have a nude girl on left arm and a scar on left temple ; dresses well and neatly, smart active appearance. He was employed as cook at the Customs Hotel, Nelson, about five years ago. Phoebe Yeitch, who, on the 2nd ultimo, at Wanganui, was committed for trial at the sittings of the Supreme Court to be held there on the 24th instant for the murder of her daughter, Phoebe Yeitch, aged four years, by drowning her in the Wanganui River on the 26th February last, made a statement at the Coroner’s inquest to the effect that the child was thrown into the river by its father, Samuel Timaru, described above. Her statement is not believed, but it is of the utmost importance that diligent search and inquiry he made for Samuel Timaru throughout the colony.
Jane Duncan left her home at Pine Hill, near Dunedin, on the 2nd instant. Description : Scotch, forty-four years of age, about 5 feet high, slight build, dark hair and complexion, black eyes, thin features ; wore shepherds’-plaid dress, grey woollen shawl, square-check pattern, and black-straw hat with red floivers in front. She was seen in Dunedin on the 2nd instant. Inquiry is made for her at the request of her husband.
Jeremiah Murphy is missing from his lodgings in Taranaki Street, Wellington, since the morning of the 24th ultimo. Description : A native of Ireland, an Episcopalian clergyman, but has lately been employed as kitchen-man at the Empire Dining-rooms and Melbourne Hotel, Willis Street., thirty-eight years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, grey eyes, sandy hair worn short, red side-whiskers, chin and upper lip shaved ; wore black-cloth suit, considerably worn (frock-coat.), hard black-felt hat, and elastic-side boots ; addicted to drink. He arrived at Wellington from London on the 23rd May last by the ship “ Crusader.” Inquiry is made for him at the request of his wife.
Inpormation is requested respecting the whereabouts of Thomas Edward Bigger, who left Ireland in 1865 for this colony, and was heard of about four years ago from the Royal Hotel, Walker Street, Dunedin. Inquiry is made for him at the request of his brother, W. H. Bigger, Arva, County Cavan, Ireland.
Information is requested respecting the whereabouts of George White, a native of Ireland, a gold-miner, fifty-two years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexiou, blue eyes, aquiline nose, black curly hair, supposed to be now turning grey. He left Adelaide about seventeen years ago for this colony, and was heard of at Charleston in 1867. Inquiry is made for him
at the’request of William White, Hindmarsh, South Australia, through the Commissioner of Police, Adelaide.
Information is requested respecting the whereabouts of Catherine Dewar, who left her home at Lower Hawea on the 21st December, and was seen at Kingston on the 4th January following. Description : English, tvrenty-four years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stout build, fair hair, full florid face, nose slightly cocked. She took her two children with her, Margaret Mary, aged four years, and Isabella Ann, aged two years. When she left her home she was far advanced in pregnancy. Inquiry is made for her at the request of her husband, who is at present residing at Cromwell.
Information is requested respecting the whereabouts of David Mason and Archibald Lilly, who are missing from their homes in Christchurch since the 30th ultimo. Description : Mason is a native of the colony, ten years of age, medium height, fair complexion, light-brown hair, blue eyes; wore dark kniekerboeker suit and red socks. Lilly is a native of the colony, eight years of age, medium height, fair complexion, and light hair ; dressed in kniekerboeker tweed suit and soft brownfelt hat. They were seen together on the 6th instant near the Carlton Hotel.
