Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

(See Police Gazette, 1881, page 89, and 1882, page 35.) Charles Everett, charged on warrant with stealing money from the person of Griffith A. Fleming, St. Kilda, was seen about a month ago driving a baker’s cart at Sydenham, near Christchurch, supposed for a baker named Wright. His correct height is about 5 feet 8| inches ; he has small whiskers and moustache. His parents reside at Caversham.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing, at 10.30 p.m. on the 6th instant, from the shop-door of A. Adams, Victoria Street, Christchurch, a ladies’ new dark walking-jacket, false pockets at back with velvet braid, four black-braid buttons on each side at back ; value 9s. 6d. Identifiable. Description : About twenty-five years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, sharp features, dark beard whiskers and moustache; dressed in old dark coat, tight trousers, slouched soft blackfelt hat, and dirty liankerchief round neck. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 25t.h or 26th ultimo, from a bedroom in Stone’s Commercial Hotel, Tunaru, three £lO notes, bank not known, Nos. 3394, 445, 031605; four £5 notes, bank not known; and two £1 notes; the property of J. P. West. Mr. West had six £5 notes, the numbers of which are as follow : 1391, 5571, 236787, 180409, 13144, and 181931. He changed one of the notes at Dunedin and another at Oamaru, but does not know which. Four of the numbers given are the numbers of the four £5 notes stolen. Suspicion attached to Billy Wilson and Harry Brown. (For Wilson’s description see Police Gazette, 1880, page 215.) Brown is a half-caste negro, twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, stout, build, thin dark beard, whiskers, and moustache; dressed in light-tweed suit. They are members of the Mastodon Minstrel Troupe, at present performing in Christchurch.

Stolen on the 17th or 18th March last, from the Bangiriri Hotel, Rangiriri, Auckland, an open-faced English silver Geneva watch, No. 10717, value £3 155., a snake-pattern

gold-plated chain, and a locket, flowered on one side, plain oir the other, attached ; the property of Richard Simpson. Identifiable.

Stealing a gold watch, &c., from the dwelling of Elizabeth Forrest, South Dunedin : The gold watch has been l'ecovered,. and traced to the possession of Eliza Whittit, who has been arrested by Detective Robert Bain, Dunedin Police, and committed for trial.

Stealing gum, &e., from the whare of John Johnson, Brown’s Lake, Auckland : The stolen property has been recovered, and John Dinnan and James Sheehan arrested for the offence by Constable Michael Naughton, Heleusville Police; Dinnan sentenced to one month’s labour, and Sheehan discharged.

Stolen about the 20th ultimo, from the dwelling of William Collins, Waikomiti, near Auckland, a silver hunting-wstch, maker Hames, Auckland, No. 2702; value £4. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to James Talbot, alias Jimmy the Devil, a gumdigger, about sixty years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, grey hair beard and whiskers, no moustache ; dressed in red jacket, blue-serge trousers, and soft-felt hat. He went towards Kuukapakapa.

Between 9.30 p.m. on the 21st and 9 a.m. on the 22nd ultimo the shop of Henry Oakey, High Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen : £1 in silver, and two meerschaum pipes with crooked stems, in cases marked LIIE ; value £1 10s.

Stealing money from the dwelling of Thomas Undrill, at Ashburton : Edward Thomas Worne, aged twelve years, has been arrested for this offence by Constable Robert Neill, Ashburton Police, and committed to the Burnham Industrial School for four years.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the Northern Hotel, Oamaru, a single-breasted greyish-brown tweed overcoat, diagonal-rib pattern, two outside hip-pockets, an outside breast-pocket, and a small pocket on left sleeve, all with flaps, brown composition buttons; the property of Joseph O’Meagher ; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the Kingston Hotel, Sydenham, a silver-plated pint, marked “ Kingston Hotel, Johnston,” on front, and “ 373 (over) Lee and Wigfull,” on bottom ; the property of John Johnston ; value £2. Identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the 29th ultimo, from the person of Henry Whalon, at Invercargill, a silver levpr hunting-watch, No. 21913, maker’s name not known ; value £3. Identifiable.

During the night of the 4th instant the shop of Lawrie and Fernandos, Lamb ton Quay, Wellington, was broken into, and 'eighteen dried barracoula fish and two common barn-door fowls stolen ; value 17s.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the sliop-door of Fyfe and Cuning, George Street, Dunedin, 45 yards of claret-coloured cashmere, 1-4 yards wide ; value £5. Identifiable, if private marks are not removed.

Between 2 and 3 o’clock on the morning of the 29th ultimo the draper’s shop of George Gordon, Colombo Street, Christchurch, was broken into, but nothing was stolen.

Supposed stolen on the 15th ultimo, from the person of John Harvey, while drunk at Taradale, a silver lever huntingwatch, makers Stamford and Co., London, No. 1306, C2P under number, a silver chain, twisted-link pattern, attached; value £7. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the dwelling of John Hodge, Castle Street, Dunedin, a nearly-new check-pattern paget-coat; value £l. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a Chinese hawker, about forty years of age, round full face ; dressed in blue blouse-jacket and soft black-felt hat.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the dwelling of Ann Taylor, Castle Street, Dunedin, two babies’ frocks, one light-brown, the other scarlet with white trimming, two babies’ flannel chemises, two babies’ cotton chemises, four babies’ holland pinafores rounded at corners, three babies’ diaper pinafores, seven pairs of children’s coloured socks, and a pair of children’s elastic-side boots; value 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Elizabeth

Evans, who was boarding with complainant. Description: English, twenty-five years of age, medium build ; wore black dress with print trimmings, and blue-silk hat; carries a child in her arms.

Stealing a cheque and money, &c., from the Criterion Hotel, Balclutha, the property of Stephen Parmeuter: The purse, cheque, and two of the sovereigns have been found in one of the bedrooms of the hotel.

Smith, alias John Kitten burg, has been arrested for this offence by Detective Thomas Neil, Christchurch Police, and committed for trial. Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from the shop-door of "Messrs. Wood and Smith, Timaru, a dark frieze ulster overcoat; value £4. The coat was found on the morning of the Ist instant in the porch of the Timaru Public School.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the dwelling of John Ryder, at Otaki, an open-faced silver Geneva watch, maker’s name and number not known, a hair guard, gold-plated mounting, with pendant the size and colour of a half-sovereign, with Queen’s head on one side and “ Forget me not ” on the other side, attached; value £4. Identifiable.

On the Ist instant the tailor’s shop of William Pengclly, Durham Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen : A brown-tweed suit, value £6 10s.; a pair of greytweed trousers, value £1 14s; a pair of blue-serge trousers, value £1 Bs. ; a pair of narrow-cord riding-pants, strapped on seat and at bottom of legs with very light-coloured fine tweed, value £2 10s.; and three pairs of elastic braces, with red-and-bluc stripes, value os. Identifiable, except braces.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the pesron of James Dooley, while drunk in the Caversham Hotel, Christchurch, two £5 notes and six £1 notes on the Union Bank of Australia, and four £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand.

On the Bth ultimo the bakehouse of William Livingston, at Reeaston, near Oamaru, was broken into, and an open-faced silver lever watch, maker Brookbank, London, No. 44(569, steel chain attached, stolen; value £5. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man and boy, names unknown. Description: First is about twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair beard and moustache, cheeks shaved; wore dirty grey-tweed suit; carried a swag and a biily-can. Second is about fifteen years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, stout build, freckled complexion ; wore dirty grey-tweed clothes ; carried a swag.

The open-faced silver lever watch, the property of Moses McNicoll, stolen from Woodlands Station, Piako Swamp, has been recovered. It was pawned at Solomon’s pawn office, Auckland, by a man who gave his name as Thomas Thomson, who is believed to be identical with the man suspected.

Hardy, at Whau, near Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : A pair of black-doeskin trousers and a pair of dark-grey blankets, the property of David Archibald, value £4; and a vest, value 155., the property of J. Stolen between the 27th ultimo and 6th instant, from the dwelling of George Say well, at Kuratawliiti, Wellington, an old double-barrelled gun with very rough stock ; value £2. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Holman, sixteen years of age, 5 feet high, slight build, ruddy complexion, brown eyes ; wore old grey-tweecl suit and old soft-felt hat.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the shop-door of Thomas Prosser, Upper Queen Street, Auckland, a pair of youths’ balmoral boots, No. 14; value 12s. Identifiable.
