Attempted Murder.

About 11 a.m. on the 15th instant, as Mr. John Deans was walking through Riccarton bush, near Christchurch, he discovered a man in the bush, who, upon being challenged, and asked what he was doing, deliberately fired four shots from a revolver at Mr. Deans, two of which took effect slightly —one in his side, and the other over the heart. Description of offender : About thirty-five years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, stout powerful build, sandy or reddish hair, reddish beard and whiskers, two slight cuts across nose as if from briars; wore a short blue coat, grey-tweed trousers, and black wideawake hat; his hat fell off as he ran away, and is now in possession of the police; it is size 7. Mr. Deans fired a shot at the offender, which may have taken effect. A bundle of new clothing, believed to have been stolen, was found near where the offender stood, which it is supposed he thought Mr. Deans was about to arrest him for stealing.
