Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

(See Police Gazette, 1881, page 28.) Thomas Emley, charged on warrant with being accessory to the larceny of a purse containing £4, from the person of Andrew Sexton, has been arrested by Detective Robert Bain, Dunedin Police.

Peter Graham, alias Peter Green, is charged, on warrant issued by the Riverton Bench, with stealing, on the 14th December last, from the hotel of Morgan Hayes, at Riverton, a pair of West of England rib-tweed trousers, and a linen handkerchief; value 14s. Identification doubtful. Description: A native of Scotland or the North of Ireland, a labourer and station-hand, forty-seven years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache well mixed with grey, hair worn long and inclined to curl; dirty slovenly appearance. It is supposed that he has gone to Winton or Forest Hill.

Frederick B. O’Neil, alias Smith, is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with stealing, on the Ist instant, from a bedroom in the Good Hope Dining-rooms, Wellesley Street, Auckland, an open-face silver watch, siuce recovered; value £2 10s.; the property of Owen McGuire. Description : Twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, slight build, pale complexion, fair hair, no hair on face, pimples on face and chin; dressed in dark-tweed suit; smart appearance.

Stolen on the 11th ultimo, from the dwelling of Walker Pidgen, at Coromandel, an old single-barrel fowling-piece with wooden ramrod repaired with brass on top, a small piece of silver-mounting on one side of stock and brass-mounting on the other side near the hammer ; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 15th ultimo, from the person of Michael Travers, while drunk, at Christchurch, an open-face silver lever watch, No. 20562 on dial, no maker’s name, gold Albert chain, serpentine pattern, attached ; value £7. Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the person of Patrick Coughlin, while in a brothel in McLaggan Street; Dunedin, three £1 notes, bank not known, Nos. 127419, 128965, 137810, and about £1 ss. in silver. Notes identifiable. Suspicion attached to Margaret Clarke, Scotch, a prostitute, twenty-one years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, sandy hair; generally wears black dress, grey-cloth mantle, and white-straw hat with broad brim.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the tent of John Luben Moturoa Harbour Works, New Plymouth, an open-face silver Geneva watch, case worn thin, like shield on back with stars all round, inside case brass; and a silver Albert guard, three bends in each link, silver liorse-shoe pattern, kev attached ; value £2 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 25th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Albert Hotel, Willis Street, Wellington, two gold shirt-studs with a small pearl set in each, corkscrew-pattern stems; the property of James Torrance ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from a bedroom in the boardinghouse of Mrs. Kruse, at Nelson, a Post Office Savings Bank book, issued at Wanganui; the property of Albert Millard. Identifiable. He left Nelson on the 22nd ultimo, and is supposed to have gone overland to the Bnller.

Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from the bar of the Eoyal Hotel, Caversham, a large plain decanter with white stopper, full of whiskey ; the property of James Muir ; value 13s. 6d. Decanter identifiable. A swagman, name unknown, suspected.

Stolen between the 19th and 21st ultimo, from a cash-box in on oflice in tlie boot factory of Samuel Frederick Bastard, Cumberland Street., Dunedin, twenty £1 notes on the Coloniul Bank, 4s. 3d. in silver, and Id. in copper.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the hut of William Bates at Stratford, a double-cased silver lever hunting watch, maker Rotherham, London, No- 40102, no glass, glass rim difficult to close, oval-link-pattern steel guard attached ; value £6 155.; and a sixpenny piece. Watch and guard identifiable.

Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from a bedroom in the Sussex Hotel, George Street, Dunedin, an American silver lever hunting watch, glass wanting, number not known, “ Made expressly for R. Solomon ” engraved on inside of case, a brass chain washed with gold, and two watch-keys attached ; the property of Patrick Griffin ; value £5. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was in the bedroom. Description: About sixty years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair turning grey, greyish beard, whiskers, and moustache ; wore dark coat and vest, and whitemoleskin trousers.

Stolen on the 2fit,h ultimo, from the dwelling of Alexander Cairns, Melville Street, Dunedin, a white-cameo brooch, head on black ground, set in gold ; a gold locket, buckle on front, AABC in monogram on back, containing two photographs ; and a pair of black earrings set in gold ; value £5. Identifiable.

Between the 19th and 21st ultimo the warehouse of Messrs. Barber and Co., Fort Street, Auckland, was broken into, but nothing was stolen. An attempt was made to force open the safe.

Between 10.15 p.m. on the 26th and 7 p.m. on the 27th ultimo the chemist’s shop of Henry Edgar Eton, High Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen : A till, about 18 inches long by 15 inches w r ide, with black-knob handle; a cash-box, about 12 inches long by 5 inches wide, gilt round edges, containing about six £1 notes, three sovereigns, £5 Os. lid. in silver, a cheque for £2 55., a cheque for £L, about twelve penny duty-stamps, about fifteen twopenny postage-stamps, and a Post Office Savings Bank book. The cheques, Savings Bank book, and seven of the duty-stamps have since been recovered. Till and cash-box identifiable.

Stolen about the 27th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Prince of Wales Hotel, Princes Street, Dunedin, a brownleather satchel with shoulder strap, silver plate with “T. T. Telfer” engraved thereon, iu which was a canvas bag marked “Bank of New Zealand,’’ containing a £lO note, seven £5 notes, eighty-eight £1 notes, £l7 in gold (amongst which was a Dutch sovereign), about £7 in silver, a cheque for £6 drawn by Bondyne, Cockrell, and Co., Oamaru* indorsed T. 11. Dodson, and two or three £5 cheques ; the property of Bobert Thomas Waters. Cheques and Dutch sovereign identifiable.

Stolen between the 22nd and 24th January last, from a bedroom in the Royal Oak Hotel, Arrowtown, six gold shirtstuds, engraved ; a gold scarf-pin, with a small piece of greenstone in centre; a white-silk pocket-handkerchief, two whiteflannel shirts, and a half-sovereign; the property of Thomas Clunes ; value £3 Is. Pin identifiable. Suspicion attached to James Eastwood, who was seen in the bedroom. Description : Supposed to be a native of the colony, a labourer, sixteen years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, slight-build, grey eyes, fair hair ; wears dark paget coat, light-tweed trousers, white-billy-cock hat, and lace-up boots.

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from the person of Edward Windlc, while drunk at Greytown, a brown-leather folding pocketbook, fastened with cord, containing two £lO notes, a cheque for £33 on the Union Bank, Wellington, drawn by Gilligan in favour of bearer only ; a cheque for £l2 15s. on same bank, drawn by Butters in favour of bearer only; a 9-carat gold ring, size 16, with ligbt-blood-coloured oval stone, value £1 55.; and a receipt for a grey mare purchased from a Mr. Tone for £7. Identifiable, except money. Suspicion attached to two Maoris, known as Phillip Isaacs and Billy the Maori, who were drinking with complainant. Description: First. About thirty-three years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, slight build, small black beard, whiskers, and moustache, mark of cut on upper lip ; dressed in dirty grey-tweed coat and trousers, striped-cotton shirt, and drab-felt hat. Second. About twenty-three years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, black whiskers, beard, and moustache ; wore dirty grey-tweed coat, moleskin trousers, and soft black-felt hat. He passed through Carterton on the 2nd instant, riding a brown horse with flax rope for bridle, no saddle, and went in the direction of Masterton.

Stolen on tl;e 25th ultimo, from the person of William Rayner, on board the steamer “ Wakatipu,” at Port Chalmers, a silver lever hunting watch, makers Beaver and Barnett, Oamaru; value £4. Identifiable.
