AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB.

The weights for the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting came to hand from Wellington on Monday, to which date they had been postponed in order to allow the handicapper to gauge the form at the Pakuranga Hunt Club’s meeting. Mr. Coyle was unfortunately not present, otherwise he would hardly have made the differences he has done between quite a lot of the horses. Take the Maiden Platers that ran at Ellerslie, for instance. War Tank and Emerald Hill, the 'first and second in the Sylvia Park Handicap, are not engaged, but Phyllona and No Mistake, who were third and fourth in that race, have each gone up 71b.; Romance, who was close up to them, fifth, has come down 51b., and North Loburn, who was sixth, has 71b. more on, while Bitholia, who was seventh, is down 21b., and No Bother, who was eighth, has 71b. on.. Of those that finished further back, Warshot, Melting and

Lord Masterful have each lib. less, Senlac 61b. and Salvaless 111 b. more. The handicapper was clearly unaware of the fact that overweights and allowances played a very large part in the Sylvia Park Handicap, as relative differences were made based on the assumption that horses had been beaten carrying the weights allotted them; thus, in stead of weight coming off a lot of the well-beaten ones, they have been treated as though they had finished in front of Phyllona, No Mistake, Romance, North Loburn and Bitholia, who finished next to the dividend payers, and it would still be puzzling to know why, if it was assumed that a lot of the horses had really carried their allotted weights, they should be raised while horses that beat them were dropped or raised less. It could not be the extra furlong. Khublai Khan, the four-year-old from Australia, has been assessed as 21b. inferior to the three-year-old Bitholia, and they are at the top of the handicap, which could well have finished at a 6.7 minimum with 9.2 as the maximum, if the form at Ellerslie of quite a lot of the horses was worth, taking notice of. Of the Avondale Cup candidates, Alteration has 151 b. less than he had in the Jellicoe Handicap, and Meltchikoff, who many thought from the main stand had won, and who was only beaten, according to the judge, by a narrow margin, has 141 b. less, and this pair, Waiuta, and Paddington Green must be considered the best treated of those we saw race over a mile on Saturday, while Depredation, who disputed every inch of the ground with the three placed horses, rs set to meet Waiuta on 51b. and Meltchikoff on 131 b. respectively worse terms., which is very hard to account for. Paddington Green, who started favourite on Saturday carrying 41b. overweight, has been allowed 131 b. for his beating, and Killard has 51b. allowed him. There are a lot of horses which did not run at Ellerslie, and those who have been curious to know how the Australian importation Some Boy would be treated have now had their curiosity satisfied. He has been handicapped as 101 b. inferior to Uncle Ned and 51b. below King Lupin and Vagabond, and with 8.9 has been very considerately treated indeed. His last handicap in the land in which he made such a good name for himself was 9.6 over a mile and a-quarter

course at Rand wick. It has been reported that an accident coming off the steamer may prevent him being a starter, and if he should do so he would hardly be at his best, but 'fit and well Mr. Alison would have a good chance of getting his money back first pop. Housewife, who ran in one of the short races on Saturday, may come on quickly now and run a good race. There will be time to return to the. meeting again after the acceptances, which are due on Friday, but there is a good deal of the handicapping that cannot be reconciled with the form we saw on Saturday, the treatment of a lot of the horses in the Hack Welter which finished behind Elyan, Penona and Llansannor being somewhat surprising. The two first-named are not engaged, but Llansannor has been given 81b.' pull over Canowindra, who was sixth; 61b. over Multiplane, who was fourth, 61b. over Persian Prince, who was eighth, and is also set to meet Step 51b., Hessian lib., Entente Cordiale 101 b., Manakau 91b., Great Form 161 b. and Tsingarch 131 b., all of which he beat

on the better terms indicated by the weights set opposite their names, but Llansannor is not the best treated in the race. General Stephen is one that has nothing to complain of, and there are others. Mill o’ Gowrie has been handicapped to give Some Boy 31b. in the Flying Handicap, and in this race Some Boy and Uncle Ned have been treated to the same weight.
