LATE RACING, PAGE 31.

The V.R.C. has prepared a form for the leasing of racehorses, and the use of this official form is now necessary. The correspondent of the “Referee” mentioning this says that the Rules of Racing require that every lease of, or partnership agreement relating to, a racehorse trained or raced in Victoria shall be lodged for registration with the V.R.C. The preparation of a standard form will probably obviate the frequent disputes that arise in this connection. The death is announced from Victoria of Mr. Herbert Power, who, besides being one of the founders of the V.R.C., was well-known as a racehorse owner, and was in his younger days an amateur rider. Mr. Power’s colors were carried to victory in the Victorian Derby, and Melbourne Cup. in 1899, on Merriwee, and in 1911 his filly Wilari, won the Victoria Derby. That fine mare, Etra Weenie, won the late Mr. Powers the V.R.C. Maribyrnong Plate in 1891, while as far back as 1878 he took the V.R.C. Oaks Stakes with Melita. Explorer, ridden by Stan Reid, won the York Hurdle Race at the V.R.C. Birthday meeting for his new owner, Mr. W. R. Kemball, opening at 4.t0 1 and finishing at a little over half the odds. Reid rode a confident race and Explorer won by two and a-half lengths in 3min. 46%5ec., record time for the race. The son of Kenilworth and Tilga has got half his purchase money back. Reid also rode Sir Prim, winner of the Hopetoun Steeplechase, who started at 16 to 1, after as long as 33 to 1 had been taken. At the annual general meeting of the Durban (S.A.) Turf Club the proposal that the 2V 2 per cent, tax on the winning bets of bookmakers and punters should be abolished was negatived. Last year this tax brought in £16,162, of which the greater proportion was donated to patriotic and charitable funds. The club’s revenue from the totalisator was £52,856 13s. 4d„ and in the discussion*to abolish the 222y 2 per cent, tax on winning bets, the chairman mentioned that this sum was the contribution of the small punters, and the big punter paid only £16,162 through the bookmaker. The club had 27 days’ racing during the year, and distributed £52,856 in stakes, the gross amount received from the totalisator.
