A good picture of Lurline, a onetime champion race mare in New Zealand and Australia, from a painting taken just about forty-four years ago .appears in this issue. In 1874 R. J. Mason rode her and won the Dunedin Cup Handicap, which was then two miles and a distance. She was carrying 9.9, and the minimum in those days was 6.0. Later on she carried equally big weights in Australia when the minimum was 5.7, and she won the Australian Cup. * * * * Among the jockeys riding at the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting was T. E. Crockett, who has seen three years and a-half of active service. He was an original Anzac, having taken part in the landing at Gallipoli. He was subsequently invalided home suffering from shrapnel wounds in the right arm and shoulder, which deprived him of the use of the arm. He has since regained the use of the limb, and lately has been a constant attendant at the training tracks, where his services have been freely availed of. He can go to scale at 7.10. * ♦ * • Mr. C. W. Chilman has been appointed totalisator steward for the coming meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, in accordance with the wishes of the Minister for Internal Affairs. * • « ■ Rorke’s Drift Lodge has lost its head horseman in the meantime, Ivan Tilson having sustained a broken collarbone yesterday morning (writes Sir Modred in the “Southland Times”). Tilson was schooling the Glenogle mare Glengirl, generally a very apt fencer, when she got too close in to a cross-country obstacle and came to grief. The apprentice-jockey was thus compelled to miss the Dunedin J.C. fixture and a busy riding term, but hopes to be himself again when the Gore R.C. meeting comes round.
