J. D. Piper’s c f, by Jewel Chimes Cute The Auckland Trotting Club s spring meeting, which opens on Saturday, bids fair to be a highly successful one There has been such a long interval between race meetings of any kind in the Auckland province that the meeting will be a welcome break. There will be a number of visiting horses from the South Island, and their presence, together with a number ot horses new to Auckland and which are locally owned, will give to the meeting an added importance. Work on the Alexandra Park track has been of considerable interest for some time past, and the rainfall of Tuesday morning early rather improved the track than otherwise, besides freshening up the flowers and adding to the emerald green like appearance of the lawns and the centre of the grounds. The acceptances for the various events are- so good in proportion to the nominations that Mr. Fred. Edwards, the handicapper, has reason to be satisfied, as also the executive of this progressive club, whose improvement schemes have been so well begun and have already reached such a stage as will surely call forth the favourable comment of the public when assembled on the club's grounds on Saturday. We are precluded from tipping, and some ”of the horses engaged are strangers to us, but some of those that work at Alexandra Park as a regular thing and that appear to us likely to shape well at the coming meeting are: Norland, Sandy Patch, Favour Royal (if he keeps down), Beausant, Lady Burlington, Lieutenant, Waverley, Miss Rolfe, Quadroon, Wilding, .De Why, Amberite, Grattan Abbey, Shanghai, Tim Doolan (who is trained elsewhere), Derby Dillon, Comedy Chief and Goodrich. * * • • The week-enders at Alexandra Park did not muster in force on Saturday afternoon. No doubt the counter attractions at the parade at Ellerslie and the patriotic trots at Point Chevalier drew a number of the trotting units. Mr. Tom Roe’s team of three, Steel Bell, Gold Girl and another, were exercised in the centre. T. W. Price drove his team, but did not ask his horses to compete with the watch'. Charming Rod, who is in fine racing condition, showed some good bursts of speed alone and in company. The straight-out trotter, Blackthorn, looks very much above himself. A win for his patient owner would not be out of order. A maiden candidate driven by W. Orange quite surprised the onlookers by the dash of speed he showed over a smartly run half mile. Celia, Grattan Abbey, Sandrift and Favour Royal (the latter in saddle) all put in useful work. Capital King, the maiden straightout trotter, was driven by one of the owners, and was content with work of the useful order. Harold Devon will be one of the horses fancied when he faces the barrier. Mutu, the Waikato-owned trotter, has built up a lot since being away from the Epsom tracks, and is moving along nicely. Waverley has been pleasing the track experts by the way he has been reeling off the furlongs. This horse is much lighter than usual. Wilding and Comedy Chief ran along over a couple of miles, but were not on a time-making mission. Miss Rolfe is in splendid racing trim, and is probably at her best. Jewel Fashion and Bronze Patch ran some furlongs smartly. The latter was ridden by Mrs. W. Kelsey, who won a double on the same horse a.t the patriotic trots at Point Chevalier last Saturday. Kirikiriroa, Kereone and Lord Devon put one and a-half miles past recently, running home in order. Dorothy Dimple is being put through her facings by her new owner, W. Sharp, always ridden. This mare is picking up. Rita Galindo has been putting plenty of dash into her work, being handled by W. Orange. The mare probably never looked better. Norland, reputed to be a full brother to the late Mr. J. Leckie’s good horse, Mandarene, has been trotting fairly well, with W. A. Scott in the saddle. Nancy Drift, by Driftwood, has not been quite pleasing the touts of late, and is thought to put her feet down a bit gingerly. * * * • Our Christchurch correspondent writes: — Prior to fulfilling her engagement in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, Adelaide Direct will be mated with the successful American-bred stallion, Harold Dillon. W. Warren has Irvar, King Lear and Nancy Stair in nice racing order, and they, will all be seen out at Addington next month.

The speedy three-year-old Mykot, in M. Edwards''stable, has quite recovered from the mishap that befel him at Kui'ow, and is now doing’ good work again at New Brighton. It was intended to send Bidens north for the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, but when her owner saw the handicap he at once changed his mind. Cathedral Chimes remains at a very short price for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, despite his defeat at the patriotic trotting carnival. He continues to get through good work at Oakhampton, as do his stable- mates, Matchlight and Sherwood. Author Dillon’s record breaking essay at the patriotic trotting carnival has brought him into increased favour tor the New Zealand Trotting Cup. His stable connections are sanguine that he will turn the tables on Cathedral Chimes in the big event. . It was intended to engage Sungod in several of the big handicap events at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s November meeting. Unfortunately through a delay in the delivery of a telegram his nominations arrived too late to be accepted. Though the new conditions attached to several of the events at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club s spring meeting have curtailed the entries to some extent, the executive has every reason to be satisfied with the allround support accorded the fixture. Most of the Trotting Cup horses have had other engagements made for them, and altogether a better class of pacers and trotters has never been attracted for the big gathering of the year.
