THE YEARLING SALES IN CANTERBURY.

The sale of thoroughbred yearlings next month, announced by Messrs. Pyne and Co., Christchurch, will be one of the most important that has ever taken place in Canterbury. We hope that Auckland racing men especially will pay it attention and secure some of the lots, for never were the opportunities greater in the Auckland province for useful horses, and there is plenty of blood that would be useful, very useful indeed for the stud when racing careers are ended. The list of catalogued ones appears in our advertising columns, and it will be seen that there are in all 63 lots. With few exceptions, they are all well grown, and will go into the ring in excellent condition. Each of the studs from which they hail has enjoyed a fine reputation for breeding the best of racing material. The respective studmasters do their young thoroughbreds and their dams so well that nothing is left wanting on that score. The limestone country of Oamaru has proved unsurpassed in which to grow thoroughbred stock and the right kind of herbage and corn on which to depasture and feed. The Akaroa peninsula and dis-

tricts nearer to Christchurch are famed for their growing qualities, and winners of the best quality have come from there. The sun-kissed slopes of Waikanae, with the salt sprays from the seas which they smile down upon, have given us good racehorses, too. Brackenfieldbred ones by Boniform have been good, and the gets of Nassau should be no exception. He is a horse from whose breeding much may reasonably be expected. The Martians are well known, as are the gets of Boniform, his half brother. Kilbroney’s winners are increasing, and so are the Bezonians, while the representatives of Sarto keep up a fair average. Solferino, Markhope, Absurd, and Nassau will be having their first crop of youngsters racing this season.* On all sides it is thought that there will be representatives of these horses to play their parts well in the not far distant future. In addition to the lots of Messrs. J. F. Buchanan, I. G. Duncan, J. F. Reid, Bruce Christie, G. L. Stead and Captain W. Deans, Mr. George Currie is sending four lots by Absurd from his Koatanui Stud (Wanganui), and Mr. W. A. Nicholls, of Ashburton, has one by Absurd and two by Masterpiece, and Mr. S. Smith, of Lincoln, has one by Solferino, Martian will be represented at the sale by a filly from the imported English Chaucer mare Mazabuka; a filly full sister to Cherubini and Soldiers’ Chorus, a colt from Rose Red (sister to All Red and five great

producing mares), a colt from Two Step (dam of War March and Martian Princess), a colt from the imported mare Vicella (dam of Haunam, a winner of 3000sovs in England), a colt from Strathspey (dam of Birkenvale and other winners), a filly from Margarethe (by Birkenhead), and a filly from Snowlike, by Multifid from Snowstell (sister to Fleetfoot). Martian’s half brother, Boniform, will be represented by a gelding from the Charlemagne 11. mare Gargaron, a colt full brother to Almoner, a colt from Tremulous (daughter of Royal Artillery), and a filly from Polly Prim (daughter of Drum Major—Themia.) Solferino is heavily represented, geldings from Bella Donna (sister to Belasco) and Dolly (sister to Ample), and- fillies from Rose Salterne (daughter of Rokeby and Rosella) and from Miss Dalrymple (dam of Ample) are from Mr. J. F. Reid’s stud, and a colt by Kilbroney from Tea Cup (dam of Di Gama), in addition to the Martian —Rose Red colt. Solferino has ten others in the same stud. A filly from Palona (by Stepniak from Armigera, dam of Poitrina, one of the most brilliant mares in Australasia), a filly from Elaine (daughter of Birkenhead), another

frojn the Wallace mare Ailsa, and one from Elysium, the sister to Bliss and Siberia. Colts from Stepka (dam of Pavlova), Rosalia (daughter of Stepniak and Rosella), and the imported Minstead mare Madama, and geldings from Raid (daughter of Rokeby and Sortie, dam of Orloff), Anita (by St. Ambrose —Stepka) are also in the Burnside lot, as also is a filly by Solferino from imported Flower of the West, and a gelding by Cannie Chiel from Northern Light. Captain Deans has three fillies by Sarto and one by Birkenhead and a colt by Cannie Chiel. Mr. Bruce Christie has no less than seven by imported Markhope, two colts and five fillies. Two of the dams are by Gipsy Grand, two by Stepniak, one by Renown, one by Boniform, and one by Achilles. Mr. G. L. Stead will send up four by Nassau in addition to his four by Boniform. Two of the young Nassaus are from Boniform mares, one from a Martian mare, and the other from a Royal Fusilier mare, half sister to Lingerie. Besides the five lots by Martian in the Waikanae lot there is a colt by imported Absurd from the St. Ambrose mare Sequenette, a colt by imported Kilbroney from the imported mare Lady Jean 11., a filly by Birkenhead from Bebe, a filly by Benzonian from imported Desrina, a colt full brother to Sans Sauci, a filly by Bezonian from Peace (dam of half a dozen good winners), a filly by Kilbroney from Somniform (by Boni-

form —Dreamer), a full sister to Killowen, a colt by Sunny Lake from Angele (by Multiform), and a colt by Bezonian from Purity (by The Officer). Mr. George Currie, the Wanganui studmaster, will have three fillies by imported Absurd and one colt, being respectively from imported Roscommon, Carmania and Marsalas and the colt from Sea Elf. Mr. W. A. Nicholls’ trio are a colt by Absurd from Boniform’s sister, Sunglow, and two geldings by Masterpiece.
