AUCKLAND RACING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. Owners and trainers throughout the Dominion should note that nominations for all handicap events to be decided at the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting, which comes up for decision on Saturday, November 9, will close with the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence, 97, Shortland Street, Auckland, on Friday next, October 18, at 5 p.m., when final payments for the Great Northern Guineas of lOOOsovs, one mile, and Welcome Stakes of lOOOsovs, five furlongs, must also be made. The prospects of good fields contesting these two important thousand pound classics are decidedly promising, as the remunerative prize money offered can be depended upon to induce many of the leading owners to make an assault upon these much-coveted Ellerslie events next month. The principal handicap event is the Mitchelson Cup of lOOOsovs, one mile and a-quarter, named after the club’s worthy president, the Hon. E. Mitchelson and previously known to racing enthusiasts as the City Handicap. The leading sprint event is the Shorts Handicap of 350sovs, five furlongs, for three-year-olds and upwards, in which a strong field is assured. The Onehunga Steeplechase Handicap of 350sovs, three miles, will occupy the attention of owners of cross-country candidates, while the Maiden Hurdle Race of 250sovs, one mile and a-half, for all horses that have never won a hurdle race of the value of 150sovs, or hurdle races of the collective value of 400 sovs at the time of starting, can be relied upon to attract the usual large field. The- two remaining events on the richly-endowed programme are the Hobson Handicap of 250sovs, six furlongs, for three-year-olds and upwards that have never won a flat race of the value of 150sovs, or flat races of the collective value of 400 sovs at the time of starting, and the Normanby . Handicap of 250sovs, seven furlongs, which also carries the same conditions as the former event. The meeting is occasioning great enthusiasm in local racing circles even at this early stage, the fact of there not having been any racing in Auckland since the beginning of June causing many to eagerly look forward to the popular spring carnival at Ellerslie.
