Trotting

Nominations go in for the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Friday. There are a fair number of provincial horses in work, but it is not anticipated that the entry will be much, if anything, above the average for 'the spring meetings of either of the local clubs. The nominations for the Otahuhu meeting go in a week later. Everything points to the probability of success. Intending nominators should note that five o’clock is now the hour of nomination. Things are livening up at Alexandra Park in view of the approaching meetings of the Auckland Trotting Club and Otahuhu Trotting Club. G. Robertson had Harold Dillon and Goodrich going at top with the straps on. Both these pacers are well forward in condition and look like keeping up the mana of the stable. J. Lynch has three Derby candidates, two fillies and f« Gold Bell gelding. The trio seem fairly well forward.

De Why, the trotter is in nice racing fettle. W. Sharp has purchased the pacing mare Dorothy Dimple. So far she has done all her work in saddle. The mare is being built up. Nancy Drift in Koss Heaton s care, is doing better i'n her track essays, but is still pretty backward, but some of the “heads” fancy her trotting. Mr. Joe Gee is rattling his classy little trotter, Amberite, along. ' This gelding has done a lot of useful road work during the winter months, and will not want for condition when the assemble whistle is sounded. The same owner has taken up his pacing gelding, Gallipoli, who was out all the winter. The veteran, T. W. Price, who spent the winter in Christchurch, is expected back this week with a couple of horses. The two old trotters, Kirikiriroa and Kereone, are pounding round the tracks. The former is nearing his 18 foaling. W. McMaster has Lucille in hand and has leased Clive from Mr. Cuksey. He also has Grattan Abey putting in solid toil. The little pacing mare, Casling, has produced a fine filly to Wildmoor, a natural pacer. R. Hall has had his gelding, Lieutenant, at Epsom twice during the past week. The son of Commander put in useful eight and twelve furlong runs, pulling up soundly. A. Shepherd has Prince Child nice and mellow. The same trainer has a shapely Trotting Derby candidate in Ena Bell (Gold Bell — Princess Ena) in nice condition. Maythorn is one of the regulars at Epsom, and is pleasing the track watchers by her free style of reeling off the furlongs. This mare has yet to salute the man in the box. The Hendrickson Bros, are not bustling Capital King along. He is a big chestnut straight-out trotter that looks like being useful when more matured. W. Kelsey has been giving his filly, Swing Bell (Gold Bell —Swing), an easy time, as she was growing too fast. W. A. Scott has Mamuka Park and Comedy Chief doing good work. There is nothing to cavil about their condition. A. Julian has his team doing well. Ruanui, Miss Rolf, Jewel Fashion and Co. are looking bright and healthy. Julian has been sending Miss Murphy along at top. Probably the three fittest horses in one stable at Epsom are Harold Junior, Quadroon and Shanghai. A. Brown has given the handsome trio a special preparation. On Saturday there was a meeting of the clans at Alexandra Park to see the week-enders put in an appearance. There was a good attendance of both sexes to see the light harness brigade spun out. The Toiler was brought from Manurewa by the owner and ridden a lot of useful work. The gelding sweated a lot and may not be ready till the summer meeting. Sandrift and Gallipoli showed pace in patches. The former looks much lighter than the writer ever noticed before. Groat has the chestnut pacer, Harold Devon (Harold Dillon —Lady Devon), looking and going well. The gelding is pretty well forward. Shanghai and Waverley had a flutter over one and a-half miles. The latter downed his opponent at the finish. ’Cello, Miss Salisbury, Nancy Drift, Favour Royal, and Sweet Mint all put in useful work. The afternoon’s work ended by a match being run between Dignity and Gova. The . latter led practically all the way. Dignity left his feet early and never recovered the lost ground. * * * 5Trotting enthusiasts will be interested to know that copies of the new Rules of Trotting as adopted by the recent New Zealand Trotting Conference may now, be obtained from Mr. J. B. Norris, secretary, P.O. Box 459, Christchurch. These rules came into force on September 1, and a.copy of same should be in the possession of every club, owner and trainer. The price is one shilling and sixpence, but for the use of club officials and others a number of copies of the rules have been interleaved with ruled paper, and for these an extra charge of sixpence is made. • • ♦ » Our Christchurch correspondent writes: — Evelyn was the only withdrawal from the New Zealand Trotting Cup, and her defection was not unexpected. R. McDonnell Still has her full brother, Emilius, engaged, and recently he has come into considerable favour for the big event. After being on the easy list for some weeks the pacer, Sir Fulham, has been recommissioned by J. R. Blackie. Word from the south states that the crack mare Adelaide Direct is progressing well in her Cup preparation, and despite the recent ailment which prevented her from starting at the National meeting it is anticipated that she will be in a position to make a bold bid to equal her winning performance. <d last season in the big two miles event at Riccarton;

Wallace Wood has been recommissioned after a lengthy spell, and is in work under the care of W. Smith, at Addington. r . Quite the star performer seen out in the trotting events at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting was the Blackchild Junior mare, Wee Winnie. She had the result of the Geraldine Trot in safe keeping a long way from home, and mistakes on the part of most of the others enabled Leewood to gain second money. Though penalised 2sec. in the Orari Trot, Wee Winnie, after being slow to begin, was fast overhauling Nabob over the last furlong, and with another few strides to go would have reached him. After the Geraldine meeting, Wee Winnie was purchased by a patron of J. Bryce’s stable, and will in future be trained at Oakhampton Lodge. Two alleged good things in Mykot and Bigamist were sent down from Christchurch for the trotting events at Geraldine, but both let their backers down very badly. Last season Mykot gave a lot of promise as a two-year-old, and in some of his recent workouts at New Brighton he has shown more than average brilliancy. In his contest at Geraldine he was slow to begin, and quite failed to race up to expectations. Bigamist is a three-year-old gelding by Havoc from that good mare, Lady Sybil, trained by F. Fleming, Some excuse can be found for his failure in that it was his first public appearance. He showed a fair turn of speed in the early stages of the Geraldine Trot, but a bad break two furlongs from the post quite extinguished his chance.
