THE 1918-19 SEASON.

DATES APPROVED BY CONFERENCE. At the recent New Zealand Racing Conference held in Wellington, the various clubs having totalisator permits submitted dates on which it was desired to hold their respective meetings during the coming season, and after consideration the Dates Committee approved of the following list of fixtures for 1918-19: — Aug. 15, 17 —Canterbury J.C. As will be noted above, the season will be opened at Riccarton on August 15 with the C.J.C. National meeting, which is again a two-day fixture, concluding on August 17. This, as in past seasons, is the only meeting to be held in New Zealand during the month of August. The spring meetings will commence on September 4 with the Marton Jockey Club’s oneday fixture, after which the spring gatherings come in quick succession. The Wanganui Jockey Club have again decided to forego their spring meeting in order to retain two days each for their autumn and winter fixtures. The Egmont Racing Club will hold a spring meeting this year, September 19 being the day set aside for this fixture at Hawera, while the club will also hold a two days’ gathering on February 12 and 13. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s N.Z. Cup meeting will be held on November 4, 6 and 9. The Avondale J.C. spring meeting, which last year was held on November 3 and 7, will be held on November 2 and 6, the Auckland R.C.’s spring venture following on November 9. The Takapuna and Feilding spring meetings are both set down for decision on November 30. The Christmas and New Year meetings remain unaltered with the exception that the Thames Jockey Club’s annual fixture, which has always been held on Boxing Day (and the following day also prior to the recent cur-

tailment of race days), has been advanced to take place on March 22, a week after the Ohinemuri J.C.’s annual fixture. The alteration should prove of distinct advantage to the club, which has without doubt been handicapped as the result of Boxing Day being the big day of the year at Ellerslie, the Auckland Cup being an event few sportsmen care to miss.
