Snub Training on Steadily—Sardin a Disappoints His Party at Otaki— Mr. F. Jensen’s Promising Juveniles — Lady General to be Given a Spell.

MASTERTON. Saturday. Gladful (H. Stockley) and Hydrus (Stan. Reid) gave a very pleasing exhibition of jumping on Thursday last at Opaki, the former taking his fences particularly well. Snub is bowling along in fine style on the local track, and although much on the big side at present, he is looking particularly fresh and well. T. Higgins has Souvla and the two Hymettus four-year-olds doing steady work at Opaki, and they are all shaping well.

Mr. A. Cameron informs me that Galore is repeatedly given in the race books as out of Hazel. This is incorrect, as she is by All Black from Orlay. Idyllic was the only locally-trained horse to score a win at Otaki. fl’he Hymettus—ldee mare was ridden a very patient race by F. Corlett, the local light weight. Wishful is not engaged in the flat events at Napier, but will carry Mr. Kemball’s colours over hurdles. Multaine is the stable’s representative in the open flat events. At a meeting of the stewards of the Masterton Racing Club last week it was decided to apply to the Wellington Racing Club for an extra day’s permit. The horses nominated from local stables for the Napier Park meeting are: Master Boris, Wishful, Hydrus, Torchy, Brown Joe, Multaine, Gladful, Black Lake and Livland. Mr. A. Reside, of Masterton, who raced a few horses in this district a few years back, including Ziska, Bounce and Lebeccio, has a five-year-old mare by St. Ambrose —Ziska running out at Kahumingi. It is not Mr. Resides’ intention to race this mare, but he hopes to secure a visit to Hymettus next season. After running a good third in the Rahui Handicap on Monday, Mr. Fenwick’s Sardinia was well fancied for the Welter Hack on the second day at Otaki, but could not get to the leaders under his big weight. Sardinia has proved a disappointment to his connections so far this season, and has not won a race since leaving W. Galbraith’s stable at Tauherenikau.

A deputation from the Owners and Trainers’ Association waited on the stewards of the Masterton Racing Club last week, asking for sundry improvements to be effected on the local training tracks. It was decided to refer the application to the Ground Committee for a report. Mr. R. Buick, of Masterton, who still owns The Welkin horse Three, who has been racing in Australia during the past few years, informs me that he has just received an offer through his trainer (Maurice McGrath) for the horse. Three has raced consistently on the other side, but without any luck, and seems unable to do better than fill second place. Should the offer from Australia not result in the change of owners, Mr. Buick will probably bring the horse back to Masterton, where he will take up stud duties. When raced in New Zealand Three was an inmate of W. Garrett’s Opaki stable.

In addition to Matatua, Mr. F. Jensen has two very promising rising two-year-olds in work at Opaki. Hytinas (Hymettus — Martina) and Prince Mark (King Mark —Simonis) are the names bestowed on the pair. If looks go for anything they should turn out more than useful, and, as they are both very quiet on the track and in the stable, they should come to hand early. Each have classic engagements ahead. It is Mr. Jensen’s intention to engage a private trainer shortly. Matatua will next

be seen out in the Trial Plate at Trentham next month. Lady General ran a good race in the Cup at Otaki, and finished sixth. On the second day T. Higgins dec.ded to start her in the sprint event, but she did not get a good run, and again finished outside a place. The track was all against the little mare, as she likes the going firm. Now that the welter weights are appearing on the programmes, it is probable that Lady General will be given a let up, as she is too small to carry heavy imposts in soft going. Although only winning one race so far this season (on the second day at Woodville), T. Higgins’ game little mare has several placed performances to her credit.
