DESERT GOLD’S BRILLIANT CAREER.

NOT UNPLACED IN 46 STARTS. HOW HER RECORD COMPARES WITH CARBINE’S. The victory registered by the champion New Zealand mare, Desert Gold, in the Awapuni Gold Cup last week makes the thirty-fourth win recorded by Mr. T. H. Lowry’s representative during the four seasons she has graced the turf. Her brilliant achievement on Wednesday last marked her first reappearance in New Zealand after her successful campaign in Victoria and New South Wales, where her record consisted of four wins and two seconds out of six starts, her total winnings in Australia amounting to £4159. That she has retained her form after her strenuous exertions on the other side of the Tasman was exemplified in real tradesmanlike fashion, the All Black mare never giving her opponents a chance at any stage of the mile and a-quarter race. Desert Gold has now won the Awapuni Gold Cup three years in succession, and the only disappointment in connection with last week’s race was the late scratching of Biplane, who it was generally contended was likely to give her a great tussle for supremacy. Including her winnings in Australia, Mr. Lowry’s representative has this season won stakes to the value of £6784, which record she has only exceeded during her career as a three-year-old, when, as the result of winning all of the 14 events which she contested during the 1915-16 season, she earned stake monies totalling £8350. During her four season’s racing Desert Gold has won no less than £21,634 in stakes, which is £7842 less than the winnings of the celebrated Carbine, whose successes netted the substantial total of £29,476. Altogether Carbine started on 43 occasions, winning 33 races, running second six times and third on three occasions, only one unplaced performance being included in the career of this great racehorse. Desert Gold has never been unplaced, and has won 34 out of her 46 starts, running second on eight occasions and third four times. Desert Gold is now in her fifth year and should she be permitted to grace the turf next season it will be as a six-year-old. Mr. T. H. Lowry may elect to allow his crack mare take up stud duties next year, in which event she will not have an opportunity of eclipsing Carbine’s remarkable stake earning record, which received a big fillip when the famous New Zealand-bred horse carried 10.5 to victory fn the Melbourne Cup (two miles) in 1890, registering the record time of 3min. 28Jsec., Highborn (6.8) being second, and Carrege (7.3) third. This record stood for 14 years, until equalled by Acrasia (7.6), who won the 1904 Melbourne Cup from Lord Cardigan (9.6) and Blinker (7.12). During her 46 starts in New Zealand and Australia, Desert Gold has had no less than eight different riders, including the premier Australian horseman (W. H. McLachlan), who had the mount on the New Zealand mare in each of the brace of races she contested at Caulfield, Flemington and Randwick respectively. J. O’Shea has ridden Desert Gold on no less than 29 occasions, and has won 24 races on the daughter of All Black — Aurarius, finishing second twice and third on three occasions. As a three-year-old he rode Desert Gold to victory in each of her 14 starts. W. H.‘ McLachlan has -won four races on Mr.

T. H. Lowry’s champion, and finished second in the other two races in which he piloted the New Zealander. C. Emerson scored two successes in the only two races in which he rode Desert Gold, while H. Gray, A. Oliver, C. Price and C. Brown were each successful in the solitary event in which he had the mount on All Black’s daughter. The only other riders of Desert Gold have been R. Berry, who rode her in her first four engagements as a two-year-old, gaining three seconds and one third, and L. Wilson, who was atop of the Hawke’s Bay crack when Arran beat her by threeparts of a length in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes (six furlongs) during the 1915 autumn meeting of the Auckland Racing Club at Ellerslie. The following complete list of Desert Gold’s performances in New Zealand and Australia will be found of special interest to all turf enthusiasts: — DESERT GOLD'S PERFORMANCES. W. H. McLachlan, who piloted Desert Gold to victory in the Autumn Stakes and All Aged Stakes at the Australian Jockey Club’s recent meeting at Randwick, was the only Sydney jockey to score on more than one occasion at the gathering. His winning fees for these two successes on Desert Gold amounted to £ll4 15s. * * *■ * E. Moon, New South Wales’ premier cross-country jockey, returned recently from America, and fulfilled riding engagements at the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting and succeeded in registering a popular victory on Jack Rice in the Second Hurdles (two miles and a-half) on the third day of the fixture, the Rice gelding being a pronounced favourite. During his six months tour of the United States, Moon visited New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and Washington. The chief centre of racing during his stay was at New Orleans, Louisiana, where the sport continued for some months. In other parts the racecourses were snowed up, and horses being prepared for the approaching season had to be trained on tracks over which shelters had been built. Racing, Moon said, was not so popular in America as in Australia. Cross-country sport was being adopted more than in the past, and would probably grow in importance in the next few years. Up to date there had been no stakes bigger than £lOOO for the jumpers, and there were only a few of these. There were no hurdle races. All jumping events were run over brush obstacles. Moon introduced the skull-cap into America. Strangely enough it had never been used there, and the racing authorities and newspaper men who saw the device were “tickled to death with it,” to use their own comment, and it is likely to be widely adopted. He thinks there are good prospects in America, and may return after spending a season in Australia,

AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB. GREAT NORTHERN DERBIES. The officials of the Auckland Trotting Club must feel extremely satisfied with the gratifying response which was forthcoming from owners when entries came to be taken for the next two Great Northern Trotting Derbies. It will be remembered that the club first decided to include a Trotting Derby, for three-year-olds (one mile and a-half), to be run at their summer meeting, when making out their programmes for the 1916-17 season, their object in doing so being to encourage the breeding of trotters and at the same time offer an inducement to trainers to persevere with their young stock. Although the past two Great Northern Derbies did not attract anything like the number of entries that such a valuable stake warranted, the club was not in the least discouraged, but demonstrated their faith in the possibilities of this blue riband event by increasing the value of the stake for the next and following Derbies and bringing the events more widely under the notice of trotting men throughout the Dominion. The 1918-1919 Derby is now worth 500 sovs, and the 1919-1920 event 650sovs. The club’s progressive policy proved sound and far-reaching, the reward being forthcoming in the shape of a substantial entry list for both events. It may safely be said that the Great Northern Trotting Derby is now firmly established in the trotting world, and the event will no doubt form one of the features at future summer gatherings of the club. That the response made by owners has been of a representative character is apparent by the following formidable list of nominations for the two Derbies in question:— 1918- GREAT NORTHERN DERBY of 500sovs; for three-year-olds (now two-year-olds). Bonnie Maid’s meritorious victory in the Longburn Handicap (one mile and a-quarter) on the concluding day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting last week, when she defeated a strong field and ran the distance in 2min. 5 l-ssec., equalling Chortle’s record (established in the 1915 Awapuni Gold Cup), confirms the opinion that Estland at his best would have found the daughter of Boniform and Happy Maid a tough proposition to silence in the Great Northern St. Leger Stakes at the beginning of the month, in which race it will be remembered the redoubtable son of Finland had to strike his colours to the Wellington-OAvned filly. Bonnie Maid’s time in the Longburn Handicap was 2sec. better than that registered by Desert Gold in the Awapuni Gold Cup the previous day, and had the daughter of Boniform been started in the event in question she must have troubled Desert Gold far more than was the case with Menelaus and Impediment, who were second and third respectively. Bonnie Maid’s victory in the big handicap has brought her into prominence for the Hawke’s Bay Cup, to be run on Friday next.

Mooltan, the hero of two spring meetings at Randwick, was sold the other day for lOOgns. This is a great fall in the world for the handsome son of Positano. Mooltan carried Mr. J. Samuel’s colours to victory in the Metropolitan Handicaps of 1907 and 1908. He also won Tattersail’s Spring Handicap, the A.J.C. Spring Stakes (weight for age), and the Craven Plate (weight for age). He carried 9.2 in his second Metropolitan, but ran the mile and a-half in 2min. 34% sec. In the same year he was beaten by only half a head in the Epsom by Melodrama. Moo’tan was owned by’ Messrs. J. Samuel and J. Burton, and the sale was subject to Mr. Burton’s approval, which was subsequently given. When Mooltan was sold to the Indian sportsman who raced as Mr. “Gordonhas Khatan” his price was 2500 guineas, with contingencies.
