WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING. RED RIBBON WINS THE CUP. The weather was all that could be desired for the opening of the Wairarapa Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Thursday at the Tauherenikau Racecourse, and turf followers turned out in strong force, the large attendance including several thousand soldiers from the adjacent camps. The racing proved exceptionally keen, the Wairarapa Cup providing a sterling race, while the Wangaimoana Handicap was also productive of an exciting finish, the judge declaring the contest a dead-heat. Two matters occupied the attention of the Judicial Committee during the afternoon. A complaint was heard in which the owner of Miss Deval stated that B. Deeley had broken an engagement to ride that' mare in the Cup and had in lieu thereof accepted the mount on Red Ribbon. After hearing evidence the committee imposed a fine of £2O upon Deeley. On receipt of a telegram halfway through the afternoon from the Wanganui Jockey Club stating that H. Young’s riding license had been withdrawn that horseman was instructed to attend a meeting of the committee. Young, who had at the time ridden in several races, and had already piloted one winner during the afternoon, pleaded ignorance of the matter, but after consideration the committee decided that he should stand down for the remainder of the day. A phenomenal increase was recorded in the totalisator investments, the sum of £27,144 passing through the machine, as against £19,130 for the opening day of the last autumn meeting, when, however, only seven races figured on the programme, as against eight this year. All arrangements in connection with the meeting were carried out with a commendable degree of precision and thoroughness, for which happy state of affairs great credit is due to the capable secretary, Mr. C. J. Carlyon. Fourteen candidates came out to contest the Trial Handicap, a good favourite being found in Street Singer, a smart three-year-old filly by Bezonian—Soprano, who had the services of H. Gray. Blighty was second in request, while Tonukoke, who showed winning form at the Taumarunui meeting some weeks back, was next preferred. The latter shot out when the barrier lifted, with Street Singer as his nearest attendant, and though the race appeared likely to provide an interesting duel between the pair, Tonukoke scored very comfortably at the finish. Justification finished well, getting up in time to defeat Blighty for third honours.

Chimera, with B. Deeley in the saddle, was elected a pronounced favourite for the Wardell Handicap, in which there were nine starters. Lady Black and Crowhurst were both well supported. Lady Black led in the early stages, with Vermillion and Chimera handy. The last-named asserted herself once in the straight, prevailing after a splendid finish by a length from Crowhurst, who was a similar distance in advance of Vermillion.

The Mokai Hack Welter Handicap brought out a field of ten, Momac, a four-year-old mare by Achilles, being the popular choice, followed next in the estimation of backers by Occasion and Talitha. Occasion headed the favourite for over half the journey, but Momac was handy as the field negotiated the bend into the straight. The favourite then took

command, while Perrier, Skedaddle and Whakatina all threw . out strong challenges, but Momac held her advantage, gaining the verdict by a length and a-half from Skedaddle, four lengths after whom came Whakatina. Both Occasion and Perrier compounded in the run to the post. Red Ribbon’s consistent though unlucky displays at the various racing centres in the North Island during the past three months, combined with the fact that B. Deeley had the mount on the daughter of Elevation, caused Mr. F. Dorset’s representative to go out a warm favourite in the Wairarapa Cup, in which Nanna, Menelaus, Trials and Devotion -were the next best fancied of the 11 contestants that lined up at the tapes. Nanna showed the way to the field in the early stages, with Bonnie Maid and Rose Pink as her nearest attendants. Gold Soult also being prominent as the field raced past the stands. This order was maintained along the back of the course, where Trials and Red Ribbon commenced to make up their leeway rapidly, the former by dint of a brilliant run being first to turn for home. As the field was straightened up for the run to the post a splendid race appeared imminent, and such proved the case, as a keen and exciting contest ensued. Red Ribbon responded brilliantly to B. Deeley’s demands and inside the distance her victory was loudly proclaimed, and she fulfilled the expectations of her backers by scoring a meritorious win from Trials by a head, with Miss Deval a narrow margin away third. Gold Soult was fourth and Devotion fifth. The topweight, Parisian Diamond (10.1) was sent out a solid favourite for the Wangaimoana Welter Handicap, in which George, Comment and Probation were all well supported in the order named, there being a dozen starters. The favourite and Probation made the early running, and backers of the former were on good term s with themselves as Parisian Diamond still maintained his position passing the main stand. A surprise, however, was in store, for a big outsider in Bradamante came with a great rattle inside the distance, and Sir Reid, had to ride the favourite hard to avoid defeat, the pair crossing the finishing line locked together, the judge declaring a dead-heat. Mascot finished with a great burst of speed, heading Probation in the last few strides for third honours.

Eleven two-year-old faced the starter in the Nursery Handicap, Mr. Short’s speedy colt Demos, whose brilliant victory on the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting was still fresh in the memory of turf followers, being installed in pride of position on the totalisator. Torfreda, the full sister to Hymestra, was a good second favourite. The latter left the mark smartly, and never gave her opponents a chance at any stage of the race, fully confirming the high opinions that have been held regarding her undoubted prowess. Demos, who was unable to pace it with the speedy daughter of Hymettus, was a couple of lengths away, second, and had to be shaken up to stall off a late run by Active, who missed second berth by a very narrow margin. Chantry was fourth.

Speculation was brisk on the Soldiers’ Cup, Multive commanding most support, with Battle Song and Cooing best fancied of the other eight starters. Idyllic showed a lot of pace when the barrier lifted, and, getting to the front, led Battle Song, Try Again and the favourite. Racing along the back Cooing improved her position, and when the bend into the straight was reached was on terms with Battle Song, the pair being at the head of the field. A keen contest ensued, in which Battle Song

and Cooing had the race to themselves, the former prevailing by half a length. Multive was three lengths away third, followed by Consultation. Marenga was the popular pick for the concluding event, the Makahi Handicap, Association, Engari and Galore being next best fancied in that order. Association and Rajput showed the way into the straight, where Galore threw out a determined challenge. An interesting finish saw Association, on -whom Gray rode a judicious race, secure the judge’s verdict from Rajput by a length and a-half, Galore being half a length away third. Humorist was fourth. Rajput gave evidence that he has struck form, and should not be long in getting on the winning list. The results were: — V7AIB. IBAFA RESULTS .... TRIAL HANDICAP of 150sovs.'” Five furlongs. 3—E. CONCLUDING DAY.

MASCOT WINS BIG EVENT. The Wairarapa Racing Club were again favoured with glorious weather on Friday for the conclusion of their autumn meeting, and another large attendance was in evidence. Good fields were seen out in the various events, and several very fine finishes were witnessed. The totalisator investments amounted to £27,567, making a total of £54,711 for the gathering, an increase of £18,307. Proceedings opened with the Tawaho Handicap, Skedaddle being the favourite, with Imaribbon second choice. The latter showed out in front momentarily, but dropped back behind the leaders until the straight was entered, when the Blenheim representative outpaced her rivals and secured a popular victory by a neck from Manu, with Transmission third. Another hot favourite in Chimera failed to materialise in the Russell Handicap, for Crowhurst, getting into his stride quickly, never let the Finland filly get up on terms with him, eventually winning by half a length. Comment was a couple of lengths away third. After her forward running in the Cup the previous day. Miss Deval was elected favourite for the Autumn Handicap, in which Multifual and Nanna found most favour of the other six runners, Gold Soult being the outsider of the field. Nanna took up her customary role of pacemaker, but was done with when the real business commenced, Mascot and Gold Soult disputing supremacy, the former gaining the verdict by a couple of lengths. Multifual was responsible for the best performance rendered by the Multifid gelding for some time in finishing third. Galore and Association shared favouritism in the Ruamahunga Handicap, and that the public were right in their judgment was evident by the fact that the pair had the finish to themselves, the judge being unable to separate them. It was a sterling race and created great excitement. Pervolo was third. Demos let his supporters down in the Juvenile Handicap, although by a very narrow margin the son of Demosthenes finishing third to Damien and Oratress, heads only separating the trio. The Rawiri Handicap attracted a round dozen field, Glorify. Comment and Probation being the best supported, but in the running the order was in reverse, Probation winning by a good two lengths, thus keeping np the reputation of the Steppe family, Comment, who finished well under pressure, beating Glorify by about the same distance.

Multive was heavily supported for the Camp Handicap, Cooing and Momac being next in favour, but Battle Song, by Signor from that good mare Armistice, staying on, caught the leaders and finally beat the favourite half a length The concluding event ended in a comfortab’e win for the Bezonian filly Street Singer, from Soprano, the consistent Tonukoke being second and Rajput third There were eight other runners. Interest in the racing was maintained to the finish of the meeting. The results were: — TAWAHO HANDICAP of 150sovs. Seven furlongs.
