RACING REVIEWED

ROTORUA JOCKEY CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. The Rotorua Jockey Club’s annual meeting was held on Wednesday last at the Arawa Park Racecourse, Rotorua, ideal weather prevailing, while the attendance constituted a record. Visitors were present in strong force from Auckland and the surrounding districts, the club’s patron, Hon. W. H. Herries, being among the number. The racing was of a very high standard, the finishes in several instances being exceedingly close, reflecting credit on the work of the handicapper, Mr. R. Wynyard. During the afternoon £12,701 was handled on the totalisator, as against £9316 for the 1917 fixture. The management of the gathering was of a high-class order, the secretary, Mr. K. J. Rennie, being indefatigable in his efforts to promote the interests of the club.

The Rotorua Cup was contested by a quintette of runners, the Waikato representative, Tinopai, being a pronounced odds-on favourite, with Sir Ralph best backed of the others. Lady Energy made the pace in the early stages, with Royal Irish, Sir Ralph, Tinopai and Novation racing next in that order. Royal Irish drew on terms with the leader going along the back of the course and was in charge entering the straight. The veteran Soult gelding responded willingly to McFlinn’s efforts in the run to the post, easily outpacing his opponents and scoring a popular win by a couple of lengths from the unlucky Sir Ralph, who had to be hard ridden to stall off a determined challenge from Lady Energy. Miss Leslie, who had shown promising form at Hamilton, was made a warm favourite for the Maiden Handicap in a field of sixteen. J. O’Shea got her away smartly, and she was quickly in the lead, which she easily maintained to the finish, winning from Tame Te Kapu, a promising Robert the Bruce gelding owned by Mr. W. C. Ring. Miss Leslie was produced later in the afternoon, when she again easily accounted for the Mokoia Handicap, All Talk acting as runner-up in a field of nine.

A popular win was that secured t-y Demotic in the Arawa Park Handicap, in which the Demosthenes gelding defeated Tinopai by half a length, Gold Fran being third. The SellingPlate was productive of an exciting finish, Sylvasco being uanble to shake off the disappointing Soultane, who made a dead-heat of it with Mr. A. D. McCardle’s representative. Rebel was made a good favourite for the Tourist Handicap, and had no difficulty in accounting for the trio which came out to oppose him, Kereone being second Pink Tie was a staunch favourite for the Waimangu Handicap, but the best the daughter of Multifid could do was to finish second to Caballero, dead-heating with Juanna after a great set-to for the honour of run-ner-up. Pink Tie was brought out again in the Farewell Handicap, and after a good race with Independence in the straight scored a victory by a neck, Kitty Bellairs being third.
