THE 1916-17 NEW ZEALAND RACING SEASON.

SOME INTERESTING FIGURES. The following is a list of the principal winning owners, horses and sires in the Dominion for the 1916-17 racing season, as compiled by the turf statistician of the New Zealand “Referee”:— WINNING SIRES. The most successful sires were as follows, the list containing the names of all whose progeny won £lOOO and upwards:— Winners of Winners of

WINNING HORSES The winning performers for the 1916-17 season in New Zealand are given in the following list of horses that have accounted for £5OO or over in stake money during that period:—

The following is a list of winning owners, whose horses captured over £lOOO in stakes during the past season:—

Mr. Jack L. Henrys, son of Mr. J. E. Henrys, has been appointed handicapper to the Masterton Racing Club and also to the Stratford Racing Club, and has for some considerable time past been qualifying himself for such work by attending meetings whenever the opportunity presented itself. Mr. Henrys will deserve all the success that comes his way. He has a good knowledge of horses, their breeding and performances, and is not without experience of rac’ng in other parts of the world, which will always be useful to him. He is a married man and a father, but that did not prevent him enlisting and trying on three occasions to pass for active service, which has been h‘s ambition. The race won by the English-bred horse Polydamon before leaving for New Zealand was wdrth 195sovs. to the winner. There were fourteen runners, and he started at seven to one and won by a length. Ten other

of the competitors were in receipt of 71b. each on account of being entered to be sold, and they were all well-bred ones of varying ages, and any of the losers could have been claimed on the usual conditions by adding the value of the stake to the selling price. This is one result of what the war has done for racing in the Old Land. It has cheapened the present value of thoroughbreds there and made it possible for colonial purchasers to get horses at prices which they could not have afforded to give when in competition with foreign buyers, who, ’t can be confidently expected, will be in the market to replenish their studs as soon as the war is over. For Washing Muslins, Silks, Prints, Woollens and Creamery Workers’ Overall “No Rubbing Laundry Help” is best. Is. package does seven weekly washings. Contains nothing injurious to hands or fabrics. £lO guaranteed. Hutchinson Bros., Ltd.
