CONCLUDING DAY.

ELOCUTION WINS STAKES. TRIALS ANNEXES BURKE MEMORIAL. The meeting was concluded on Saturday in showery weather, the attendance being materially affected by the prevailing conditions. The track was heavy, but, notwithstanding, some excellent racing was provided. A marked falling off was recorded in the totalisator receipts, which only reached £13,109, as compared with £21,972 on the concluding day of the last autumn meeting.. The opening event, the Ohiti Hack Hurdles, attracted nine runners, the favourite’s position falling to the Gis-borne-owned gelding Tatimi, with Hylaus and Sabrenui next best supported in the order named. The good thing came undone, for the absolute outsider, Tornea, led all the way, and

at the finish was lengths ahead of -the runner-up, Tatimi, Fagot just beating Sabrenui for third place. The winner, who is a four-year-old sen of Finland and Sonnette, was bred by Mr. T. H. Lowry, and is owned and trained by the Hastings trainer, J. M. Cameron. So little was Tornea. fancied that each of his sixteen backers received a few shillings short of a quarter of a century. The running of Hylaus was hard to reconcile with his good performances at Napier Park last month, for there he was always a winner; while on Saturday he went farther back from the sendoff. An explanation of his running was required by the stewards, who, after hearing evidence, decided that the explanation was satisfactory. Master Timi was made a good favourite for the Mangatarata Hurdles, Braeburn being the next to claim attention, with Gladful third selection. The favourite and Gladful were always on deck, running clean away from the rest of the field, and in the run to the chair the Karamu representative outstayed Master Timi, capturing with something to spare by a length. Braeburn, who kept plodding along, his fencing being clean and quick, got third berth, six lengths to the leeward of Master Timi, while Sensitive, who apparently was not suited by the going was a very bad fourth. Elocution and Metallum were withdrawn from the Juvenile Handicap, the bracketed pair, Marqueteur and Piano, being slightly better favourites than Nottata, with Impediment third choice. Marqueteur got out quickly, and with Vermillion at his heels led for three furlongs, when the filly got to him, and had him settled in the straight, coming on to 'win comfortably. Nottata was a fair third. The winner was recently purchased by a client of J. S. O’Neill’s establishment, and the connections of the stable threw in for a good win, as they argued that she should have won on Friday had she not been left at the post, and it was only a question of her getting an equitable start to land her a victor. They were good judges, for she did exactly as they anticipated. This was the only one dividend returned at the meeting, and backers of the All Red filly received a dividend of over a fiver.

Hymestra looked the swell of the seven saddled up for the Hawke’s Pay Stakes, and coupled with his stable companion was the best backed, Vagabond being second favourite and Elocution third choice. Hymestra was the first to get out, but it could soon be observed that the going was not to his liking, for he was not hitting out with any and he soon went back. Vagabond was always in a good position, and when once in the straight looked as if he would be sure to win. However, Elocutioh came from a long way back, and putting in a vigorous run caught him halfway up the running. From the Press stand it looked as if she interfered with him badly, for she went right across him, and he at the same time lost several lengths. At the finish Elocution ran in an easy winner from Vagabond, with the little-fancied Powder King third. Hymestra was fourth. A protest was entered against Elocution by the owner of Vagabond for crossing, and after a lengthy hearing was dismissed, the stewards being of the opinion that although the interference had taken place it had not affected the ultimate result of the race. Elocution was bred by Mr. G. P. Donnelly at Crissoge, and is by Demosthenes out of Rangaio. She is held under lease by Mr. H. E. Troutbeck, and the victory marks the first occasion upon which the stake has been secured by a representative of his.

Chortle and Multaine, who were bracketed, were slightly better favourites than Multifual for the Burke Memorial, Trials being third in the betting. Tressida and Multifual were the leaders for six furlongs, when the former came' back to her field, and Multifual, Shrill and Multa'ne became prominent, with Trials last. Just before turning the home bend Trials commenced to move up on the outside and coming along fast and solid commenced to overhaul the leaders. With half a furlong to go he had silenced the bunch, and finishing well scored without much apparent effort from Multifual, Shrill being third. The winner is a great galloper in the mud. and the going in the event was just to his liking. He was bred by his owner, Mr. J. W. White, and is one of the pupils of P. Smith, who at one time trained Bunting. It will be remembered that when the son of Tribulation won the Napier Cup iast month at Napier Park, Multifual acted as runner-up in the event in question. Lilydale was made a warm favour-

ite for the Scurry Hack, the opposition numbering eleven, Carlatour and Potentiality being the next best backed. In proof of the solid backing accorded Lilydale, it only has to be mentioned that he had a "rifle more, than a third of the totalisator receipts invested on the race registered on his number. He proved a ,-otten reed to depend upon, for he finished absolutely last. The topweight, Potentiality, succeeded in winning cleverly from Carlatour at the finish. Lilydale carried eight and a-half pounds overweight to secure the services of C. Emerson, but the horsemanship did not avail. That Lilydale must have done something to merit the support is without doubt, for several wellarmed backers who do not eften make mistakes went for the son of Multifid in a generous fashion.

Hexton and Ohoreka were struck out of the Okawa Hack Handicap, leaving a dozen to contest the event, favouritism resting with Carillon. Swinton and Dusky Eve, who were backed in that order. Swinton carried on the running, with Headache and Carillon, to the top of the straight, Dusky Eve being one of the last at this stage. When well in the run to the mark, Carillon took charge, but a little later on Dusky Eve made his effort, and it was all over, for the son of Signor and Swift just scored without any pressure.. Headache being third and Maorilander fourth. The final event, the Farewell Handicap, attracted half a score of runners, Sea Lord being the most in demand, with Centre second favourite and Shiela third pick. The favourite began well, and after going three furlongs was joined by Gazique, who soon had him settled, and finishing in great style registered an easy win fiom Centre, who made up a lot of leeway in the concluding furlong. Shiela. who was slow to move at the barrier rise, finished on well in third place, and it looked as if that, had she got out as favourably as some of the others, she would have been very hard to beat. Sarah Grand and Cheloma were only in evidence in the early portion of the trip, being just behind Sea Lord until Gazique outed them. The winning jockeys’ list at the meeting was headed by L. Goodwin, a son of the late Arthur Goodwin, who is apprenticed to R. Gooseman, with three winning mounts, H. Watson, with a couple of scores, coming next. The following were up on a victor apiece:—H. Manson, T. Close, A. Reed, J. O’Shea, R. Reed, C. Emerson, E. Manson, S. McSeverney, W. Bush, J. Hockley, and C. Sinclair.
