HERE AND THERE.

Captain Wallingford, who won the Military Cross at Gallipoli, has taken over the post of chief musketry instructor to the New Zeaalnd military camps, from Captain Purdcm, who is leaving shortly on active service.

Major D. E. Cardale, of the New Zealand Signal Corps, has been granted an extension of sick leave.

Sydney papers record an improvement in recruiting figures for New South Wales. The organising secretary of the State Recruiting Commit tee states that during February 2548 recruits volunteered in New South Wales, of whom 1657 were accepted, and 891 rejected on medical grounds.

Mr. Mervyn Fry, who recently left to join the patrol services in England, lost his life through the blowing up of a super-mine sweeper, of which be was in charge. He was the son of Mr. Roland Fry, merchant, of Auckland.

Mr. Walter Wright, who has been for five years inspector of dairy produce in Britain for the New Zealand Government, and a member of the staff of the High Commissioner’s office, is returning to New Zealand shortly.

Judge J. B. Jack, of the Native Land Court, who for the past seven years has been stationed in the Wanganui district, has resigned his position in order to enter into partnership with Mr. G. W. Currie.

General Sir Douglas Haig, in the extent of the tributes paid to him during the war, will soon have eclipsed his record in the South African campaign, when he was thrice mentioned in despatches. After French, he is probably our greatest cavalry leader.

Hon. A. T. Ngata has had erected a fine residence at Wai-o-Matatini, near Waiapu, and a big gathering of Maoris has just been held in the vicinity. During the meetings the sum of £5890 12s. 4d. was raised for the returned Maori soldiers’ fund. Hon. Ngata’s house was inspected and the famous “carved room” formally opened. The residence is of a large and extensive nature, the interior decorations being of an artistic and tasteful kind (says the “Poverty Bay Herald”). Amongst the numerous rooms s one which is designed after the nature of the old carved houses, being panelled throughout with splendid carving, which must have occupied many months of labour. The carvings and the room generally are in faithful keeping with the old traditions, and naturally formed, an object of considerable interest. Lady Carroll was entrusted with the honour of formally declaring the room open, after the time-honoured custom.

Among the articles brought from the Antarctic by the Aurora was a bottle of ale with a history. The Challenger Expedition of 1875 carried with it into the Arctic regions some ale specially bottled for the use of the explorers. The expedition returned to England with a few of the bottles still unopened, and one of them at least has been retained as a souvenir ever since. The owner wished the bottle to complete its travels by visiting the South Polar regions, and he therefore entrusted it to the members

of S r Ernest Shackleton’s expedition. His faith was not misplaced, and the bottle returned to Wellington with the cork still undrawn. • * * •> Application was made to Mr. Justice Simpson, in equity, at Sydney recently for an order for adequate provision to be made from the estate of the late John Norton for the maintenance and education of his daughter Joan. Mrs. Norton’s affidavit set out that the testator had directed his trustees to pay out of income £5OO a year to his daughter Joan when she attained the age of 21 years, and until she was 30 years of age. The affidavit of W. A. Windeyer stated that, from admissions made by Norton’s counsel,

the assets of the estate were of the value of £150,000, with an income of £17,000. Counsel for the applicant stated that, as matters stood at present. and if the present income in the estate was maintained, there would be a great accumulation of principal by the time the applicant, Joan Norton, now nine years of age, attained the age of 30 years. After argument, further consideration was reserved.

It is stated that Mr. H. lan Simson, who was defeated by Sir John Findlay in last week’s Parliamentary election, has decided to contest the next Mayoralty election for Hastings.
