FEILDING JOCKEY CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. KOESIAN WINS STAKES. RINALDO SCORES IN ST. ANDREW’S HANDICAP. The Feilding Jockey Club were favoured with perfect summer weather for the opening of their spring meeting on Wednesday, and this fact, combined with the prospects of an enjoyable afternoon’s racing, was responsible for the splendid attendance of racegoers, who were present from all parts of the North Island. With large fields engaged in the various events the racing proved of a keen character, the finishes in most cases being close and exciting. Speculation was very brisk, the sum of £19,925 being handled on the totalisator, as against £18,521 for the opening day of last year’s fixture. 4 he meeting proved one of the most successful ever held by this popular club. The management of the gathering was excellent, and in this connection the secretary (Mr. Ed. Goodbehere) and his staff are to be congratulated on the splendid work they did. Handicapper J. E. Henrys had the satisfaction of beating the public, as only three favourites got home during the meeting. Starter R H. Skipwitn has been seen to more advantage, but the extraordinary size of some of the fields was against good starts on such a track. The times recorded furnished proof of the fine quality of the horses engaged, also of the fact that the going was good. From every point of view, the Feilding spring meeting of 1916 can be written down as a great success, and it must have added to the number of racegoers who maintain that this club’s fixtures are as enjoyable as any held on the coast. Proceedings opened on the first day with the running of the Aorangi Trial, for which 15 out of the 32 on the card were scratched. The two Australian importations of Mr. W. Duncan —Acre and Arrowfield—were bracketed, and were made warm favourites. Acre got out well, and looked a winner at the turn into the straight, where The Baronet began to move, and gradually catching the colt won by half a length,, paying a big price. Fourteen lined up in the Flying Stakes, for which Lady Black was the most fancied, and the daughter of All Black —Sweet Helen made good, scoring comfortably from Hushman, who was first out. Interlude ran well for half a mile, but then faded away. The thirteen starters in the St. Andrew’s Handicap left the mark on even terms. Square Deal made the early running, and was first into th a

straight from Lady Louisa, Bon Reve and Adjutant. Once fairly turned for home Rinaldo showed some of h:s oldtime brilliancy, and cutting down the field in great style won by a length comfortably, paying a fine price. It is understood that his connections were not too sanguine, and did not benefit so much as they would have done had his recent form suggested that the son of Charlemagne 11. was likely to “come back.” Adjutant, the favourite, ran well, and Square Deal’s showing makes him look a likely winner soon. There were only three starters in the open hurdles, and Marton was made favourite. He led for a mile, when Sir Donald headed him, but Glenorchy took charge later on and the race was over, Marton finishing last. Vladian did not start, as he .recently injured a knee in jumping. A splendid race was witnessed in the Hack Hurdles, in which sixteen faced the starter, the winner turning up in Nicomar after a great struggle with Kurapai, the latter making a big effort over the last bit. Record carried most money, but shaped very disappointingly. Austin jumped well, and finished third. Eleven went to the post in the Feilding Stakes, Crowhurst being the public fancy, but the two-year-old shaped badly, finishing fourth. The winner turned up in Koesian, the three-year-old son of Elysian leading all the way and beating Bimeter by a neck, with Cease Fire half a length away. It was a fine field and a splendid race. Client was the popular pick for the Kiwitea Welter, but got away badly, and Detroit, getting off well, led all the way, Montana and Lady Amai filling the places. The winner paid a big price, as did also the Stakes winner. There were no fewer than 21 runners in the Fitzroy Hack, which brought the first day’s racing to a close, Mascot (a three-year-old filly by Martian —Mary of Argyle) being entrusted with most money. Rewa Rewa made the pace at the start, which was of the straggling order, but Hastie was in front at five furlongs. Munition and Antwerp made their efforts in the straight, but Analogue came with a fine run and got home nicely, paying a good price. The second day of the Feilding meeting was held on Thursday in beautiful weather, the attendance again being very large. Racing was keen, the finishes being particularly close, while backers were faced with no easy task in making their selections. The totalisator investments amounted to £21,893, as against

£20,184 for the second day of the 1915 fixture, making a total for the meeting of £41,818, as against £38,705 last year.

The ball was set rolling with the York Stakes, for which thirteen started. Rangitero was made favourite, Gaycium and Astor also being well backed. Rangitero was kept well back until two furlongs from home, when Oliver brought the son of Papakura along with a rattle and got home by a neck from Jean Laddo and Menelaus. Lady Middleton was fourth. Gaycium was prominent in the early stages, but did not run up to expectations.

Thirteen started in the Nikau Hack, Munition and Black Lake carrying a lot of money each, Merry Andrew also being well supported. It was a splendid race, Namur getting the verdict after a rattling finish with Merry Andrew and Flying Spur. Namur was last to begin, so that his performance was a good one.

Fourteen lined up for the Manchester Handicap, Squa.'e Deal carrying the bulk of the coin, though Adjutant and Rinaldo also had many supporters. This was another great race, Bronk Delaval winning by a neck from Rinaldo, who had gone up 91b. for his win on the first day. Austin landed the Cheltenham Hurdles for his new owner (Mr. H. W. Johnston) in fine style, leading all the way. There were only six starters, and both Marton and Record finished out of a place. Kurapai was made favourite for the Hack Hurdles on the strength of his fine effort on the opening day, and he duly won, Combustion and Delage filling the places. The latter ran a good race, and Murt Gardner should win a race over the small sticks soon with the son of Field Battery. The Oroua Stakes was contested by nine, Bimeter being the popular pick, Bisogne also being well supported. Hupana and Acre both gave trouble at the start, which favoured Bisogne and Interlude, but Tino Atua took charge after going two furlongs, and led into the straight. Here Bisogne and Bimeter closed up, the former winning by a length from Mr. Greenwood’s representative. There were 24 starters in the Maiden Scurry, the best-looking of the lot being Pohehe, who is of doubtful parentage, being either by Achilles or Bezonian out of Mallaig. This gelding got home by a long neck from

Form Up and Sunny Climes. The winner, who paid a nice price, is owned by Mr. W. Duncan and trained by F. Tilley, who also had the satisfaction of leading in the winner of the Railway Welter, which brought the meeting to a close. There were thirteen starters in this event, Client being sent out favourite, and the son of Elevation won easily, San Sebastian and Ladify filling the places.

Mr. W. Duncan had a good innings at the meeting, as he owns Rinaldo (winner of the St. Andrew’s Handicap and runner-up in the big money the second day), also Pohehe and Client, each of whom won a race, and Acre, who ran second in the Trial Plate.

Emerson and C. Price each rode three winners. The other successful riders were C. Stratton, R. Thompson, A .McDonald, W. Young, F. Corlett, L. Traill, A. Oliver, G. Clarke, MeSweeney, and Goldfinch.
