DEATH OF WARWICK CHAAFE.
Warwick Chaafe, brother to John Chaafe, senr., who has been a more or less prominent figure in the racing world of New Zealand for thirty odd years and is now looking after the stud of the Hon. J. D. Ormond at Karamu, Hawke’s Bay, died suddenly in Sydney on June 28th. The deceased, who was well known throughout New South Wales, was over in New Zealand on a visit a few years ago, looking remarkably well, and though he had reached the age of 72 was pursuing his calling as a trainer to the last, and, according to a Sydney writer, had quite a promising team in hand. The ex-New Zealand steeplechaser Pilot was one of the best jumpers he trained in recent years, and Brookong, the Maribynong Plate winner, was voted one of the best flat horses he had prepared. Peter, John and Willie Chaafe are members of the Chaafe family that have met with success as trainers in New Zealand. The deceased was their uncle, and was much respected. He was at one time a horseman.
