A BAD PRACTICE.
In Victoria some of the racing clubs have been receiving entries on the condition that owners should not pay anything if they did not start their horses, says “Pilot” in the “Referee.” This is contrary to the rules, and the V.R.C. has circularised country clubs, pointing out that if any entrance fee is payable on nomination, it must oe paid before the time for closing entries, or the nomination will be absolutely void, and the horse cannot win the stake. It is not so many years ago that the practice of putting horses in a race without payment in order to make an attractive entry list was rather common in New South Wales, and whether it has been entirely discontinued is a matter of opinion. At some recent meetings in this State the smallness of fields compared with the long entry lists certainly left room for doubt as to whether the rule bearing on the point was meeting with strict observance.
