ELLERSLIE ITEMS.

The horses claaning engagements at the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting, after being eased up for a few days, were going full blast again at Ellerslie on Saturday morning. The sand, outer grass, tan, two-year-old and jumping tracks were available and were all well patronised. Tact, Prince Soult and Loyal Arch, looking none the worse for their efforts at the A.R.C’. autumn meeting, were stretched out over five furlongs on the outer grass, with the chestnut in the van, covering the distance in lmin 3 l-ssec. Toreador, looking benefitted by his recent racing, had Glissando for a companion over the same track, taking 4-5 sec longer, but lie could have reduced the time. Goldsize, sharpened up by the Easter and St. George’s Handicap racing, made the clock holders look at their watches several times to see if a mistake had not been made. The register was lmin 51 3-ssec for an outer grass circuit skimming the corners. Mr. J. D. Kemp’s pair Jolie Fille and Prince Merriwee worked usefully. The Soult mare seems to have freshened up a little. Gold Necklet, Prophet, Hamlet, Tripoli, Admiral Soult. Colonel Soult, Nildah. Luros, Brookfield, Munster and others were responsible for serviceable tasks. After the breakfast interval Tararu Jack, Delenda and Goldcatcher lined up on the grass and put three-quarters of a mile behind in lmin 19 2-ssec. The latter registered lmin 22 2-ssec. Bluestone, who looks greatly improved with recent racing, skipped over five furlongs on the grass in good time, the last three .furlongs being le f 't behind in 38 3-ssec. Dan Castor and Chime came home in this order from the five furlong disc on the grass in lmin 6 l-ssec. Some interest was taken when Lady Middleton lined up on the six furlongs grass gallop with Kauri King and another. They finished in order in the good time of .lmin 17 2-ssec.

Another interesting gallop was given by the trio Gold Fran. Kaween and Waimangu. Gold Fran was ahead, the other two being together in a grass circle run in lmin 55sec. Phosphorus, Lady Alicia and Hadj ran a mile on the grass, the last seven furlongs in lmin 3T 3-ssec in order. Hadj ran unkindly. A very sound gallop, the little mare well up. Taj Mahal and Harleston were together over four furlongs in 52 2-ssec. The Marble Arch Youngster has an improved appearance. Nat Lupin swung round the grass at top. The last seven furlongs were covered in lmin 40sec. The chestnut looks bright and muscular and can be depended on to put up a good fight in the Chevalier Steeplechase. Christmas Rose put up the most attractive five furlongs of the morning, swinging round the distance in the good time of lmin 3 l-ssec on the grass. Soultane, looking on the top of his form, with Deeley in the saddle, ran out six furlongs, finishing with plenty of dash. Causeway, Crescendo and Monodon were hustled over half a mile, coming home in order, on the grass in 51sec. Signo, Loloma and Try Fluke covered the same track in this order in 50 4-5 sec. The former is on the improve. Blueform and Maui Nina skipped over five furlongs on the grass in the fair time of lmin 5 4-ssec, being very close together. Pacific Slope was a neck to the good of March in a half mile flutter on the two-year-old track in 52 2-ssec. On the grass Worcester bettered this by 4-ssec, beating Marble Star. The latter is coming back to condition again, however. A grey had all the best of Lady Elgiva in a grass circle run in lmin 55 4-ssec. THE JUMPERS. Cloudy Dawn held Whakanui safe for a spin in negotiating a couple of the schooling hurdles. Tragedy King led Soultikoff over two of the little schoolers twice, but the pupil did not take any too kindly to the task. Time and patience works wonders, however. Monathol gave a finished display over a few of the battens and should prove

useful with practice at the lepping game. Black Northern led El Gallo over the schoolers. The latter shaped fairly well. He should prove useful with more confidence. Lady Sabretache alone jumped the sod wall, double and stone wall. The mare fenced much better than usual. Starwood, who was running so well in the Paeroa Steeplechase till he misjudged his distance, hopped over the schooling hurdles fairly well and looks a miniature Captain Jack. Captain Loch and Guiding Way put in medium pace work on the grass track. The veteran Dogger Bank, Valentine and Hoype jumped a couple of the big battens well. Valentine then ran round the grass circle. Hopye looks a useful sort. Moehau hopped over two battens and then took on the sod wall and double, but the second fence of the double grassed him. Neither the horse or rider were hurt. Blue Garment, Salvia and Achilledes were watched with interest when they trotted up to the grass six furlong disc. Leaving smartly, they made the pace willing, running home in lmin 17 3-ssec. The last-named is sure to be heard of shortly. The two-year-old Delembre, by Seaton Delaval—Timber, was found in his box one morning recently with his pelvis injured. Dr. Ring has the case in hand. Mr. Tooman has had a fall off Barbwire in each of his last three starts. The Gluten gelding should be getting a good jumper now. Mr. J. H. Walters will not be present to see his game little Goldsize run at Avondale. Mr. Walters left for Sydney and Melbourne early in the wook on a holiday jaunt. Goldsize made a wonderful run in the St. George’s Handicap. The little chestnut was second to last in the run home from the half mile post and was running about fourth at the finish. Tripoli scored her first race at Ellerslie when she won the Stewards’ Handicap on Easter Monday. The

daughter of Obligado—Cyrenaica was nicely treated with 6.10 4 a weight of which she is mistress. Mr. John Marshall's Gold Necklet is another filly that is not partial to and soon stops under any sort of a burden, but runs a decent race with anything under 8.0. Both the Auckland crack light weights Deeley and Budnanan will be assisting at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting. They left early in the week for Trentham. The Taranaki gelding Glenroy and the three Waikato horses Glenspire, Hamlet and Kauri King are the top weights in the opening event at Avondale. The Avondale Handicap looks to have a little more select company than usual. All of the acceptors have saluted a judge, and the recent winners Colonel Soult and Royal Irish, will be' fighting their A.R.C. battle over again, while Jack Delaval, Goldsize. Tinopai. Mullingar and co. will give the race an added zest. The owner of Dan Castor is not satisfied with the weight apportioned to his gelding. Mr. Stewart says he has to meet horses that have Won in open company at even weights, while his horse has only won among the hacks. Such is the burden of his complaint. Mr. J. George is with us once again, and brings a quartette, Crown Pearl. Royal Arms, Glenroy and the hurdler Tirohanga. The horses were taken straight out to Avondale. Merry Roe and Castalia are the only Auckland horses that will be present at the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn fixture to keep up the mana of the local stables. The Auckland trainers are taking time by the forelock and are getting their novices acquainted with the timber before the winter arrives. Nimblefoot, El Gallo, Soultikoff, Moehau and others are all busily engaged schooling at headquarters. Loloma, Gold Necklet and Signo, weighted respectively at 8.10, 8.8 and 7.8, should keep the rest of the fieid busy in the Maiden Plate at the Avondale Jockey Club’s autumn gathering. R. Hannon took his useful team home after the Auckland autumn gathering. Bouvardia, Brookfield. Gluepot, Fionnuala, Goldcatcher, Anne Devlin, Monodon and Crescendo are all engaged in the Maiden Handicap at Avondale. They still have their maiden status. Bert Oliver, who was granted a trainer’s license by the A.R.C., has Goldhunter in work at Ellerslie. Investors on Jack Delaval, Colonel Soult, Royal Irish, Mullingar and Goldsize should keep the totalisator bells ringing at the Avondale meeting and should be pretty evenly backed. Scots Guard looks like building up a decent aggregate on the tote in the Chevalier Steeplechase. Maisonette and Nat Lupin are daintily treated with 9.7 each. Loyal Arch, despite her weight and Taj Mahal will probably be well supported in the Juvenile Handicap. Glissando will most likely get a place She is handy. MONDAY. Before breakfast on Monday morning things were very quiet at Ellerslie when the final gallops prior to the Avondale meeting took place. Glissando easily settled Crescendo in a run from the half mile post on the grass in 51sec. Worcester again beat Marble Star over five furlongs on the sand in Imin 7 4-ssec. Mullingar appeared to be going better than Jack Delaval in a spurt up the straight after a useful circuit. Jolie Fille and Prince Soult ran six furlongs on the sand in the moderate time of Imin 23 2-ssec. Goldsize, assisted by Hima, a grey stable mate, ran six furlongs on the grass in Imin 17sec. Lady Elgiva alone was spun out over the same track in Imin 19 2-ssec. Moraghan’s team were content with medium pace work. The majority of Jones’ team were also on the easy list. McHugh’s trio Whakanui, Romanui and Manukau, were not bustled Bedford has not been near the tracks at the morning sessions for several days. After breakfast. Valentine, a good looking hurdler, ran round the grass track in Imin 2 l-ssec. Try Fluke was smarter than Loloma at the end of four furlongs in 50sec. The stable pair, Signo and Bouvardia. chipped 2-ssec off this time. Colonel Soult alone put in a couple of medium pace rounds on the grass, and was anxious to extend himself Blue Garment ran away from a mate in a four furlong spin on the grass in 49sec. Salvia dashed over a few furlongs alone and was finishing fast. The mare is very fit. Munster gave Phosphorus a start and a beating on the grass over threequarters of a mile in Imin 17 l-ssec, a good gallop. Nimblefoot jumped the sod wall double and stone wall fairly well. El Gallo seemed tiring at the end of a round over five hurdles. Lone Moor will be put over the timber next week. Vestal alone negotiated the sod wall, double and stone wall. The mare is not at her best over the fences, being a bit backward. Hamlet Achilledes, Dogger Bank. Dan Castor, Tripoli, Glucian, Barbwire and others worked. Frank Loomb took his team out to Avondale on Monday morning.
