WANGANUI.

(From Cur Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, Monday.

Wanganui owners had a fair amount of success dur.ng the Christmas meetings, Ararat, Foeman, Princess Moutoa and Sun bird winning for the Fordell stable, Denise Orme scoring a couple of victories for Alex. Hall, while Sweet Van won the Stratford Cup and Tirohanga a couple of hurdle races for W. Rayner. At New Plymouth Sweet Van was strongly supported by her connections in the Chr.stmas Handicap, but appeared <o find the seven furlongs too far for her. At Stratford she won over a mile and a-quarter in good style, having improved a lot in the interval. The daughter of Sweet Simon went off her feed after leaving Wanganui, and had ea.en nothing for three days when she started at New Plymouth, but from then on she did all r*ght, w.th the result that she was able to show her best form at Stratford, and won the big money as sta.ed. Her stable companion won the hurdles each day, so that Rayner had a good innings at the meeting. Foeman Avon the Trial Plate at Marton like a tradesman, and in the fullbiother to Postillion Mr. Wire Tokena appears to have a gelding which should win some good races. The son of Advance did not show the same dash on the concluding day, Avhen the best he could do was to run third in the Farewell Handicap. A very popular win was that scored by Sou iii the. Ladies’ Bracelet at Aiarton. The geMmg named is by S.epson—Wangaehu, and was ored by Air. S. Wcodul, in wnose name he laces. H.s owner is one of the bestknown and popular res.dents on this coast, and nence the w.n was well lece.ved. Son paid a good dividend, which made the win ail the more pieas.ng to those who supported the gelding. The winner was nicely Handled by Mr. J. 13. Ga.sford, but the horsemanship displayed bj r some of the other riders was very amateurish indeed. Postillion was greatly fancied here for the Railway at Ellerslie, but he failed to run mto a place in that event or any other race at the meeting. The son of Advance is evidently not now ihe champion which he was once bel.eved to be. However, he can muster up a lot of pace when in "tTHe humour, and may win some good races yet for his owner. Mr. B. T. Benne.t, who formerly owned Halberdier, wh.ch won the N.Z. Cup for him, trains Silver Fiood, the five-year-oid geld.ng by Wanui out of a Sylvia Park mare, which won the Farmers’ Plate at Stratford. The Wanganui J.C. autumn meeting will be held on the 25th and 27th February, and the Trotting Club’s annual meeting on the 26th February and March 1 (Fr day and Monday). The last gathering of the Trotting Club was held at a similar time, and proved a big success from every point of view. Considering that the Club intends giving away £lOOO in stake money at its forthcoming meeting, there is every reason to anticipate that it will score an even bigger sue cess, as the more valuable prize money should attract many of the best class of trotters from all parts of the Dominion.
