WOODVILLE DISTRICT JOCKEY CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING. FIRST DAY. KOOYA WINS THE CUP. (From our own Correspondent.) WOODVILLE, February 18. Contrary to the usual state of affairs at Woodville, fine weather favoured the local Jockey Club for the opening day’s fixture of their autumn meeting, which took place to-day in the presence of a large concourse of spectators. A counter attraction at Dunedin drew away a number of familiar faces, but, nevertheless, the attendance was very satisfactory. visitors being present from all parts of the country. Kooya scored a meritorious success in the Cup, winning very handsomely at the business end from the favourite Immer, while Mysteriarch, who was well fancied, was close up fourth. Chief stipendiary steward Mr. J. McMahon was on the alert for any suspicious practices, and during the afternoon he found it necessary to bring A. Oliver and R. Hatch before the stewards. The former was admonished for not persevering in a more resolute manner with his mount (Orleans) in the Maiden Handicap, while a similar charge was preferred against R. Hatch for the injuducious handling of Alecto in the Victoria Hack Handicap. After hearing some evidence the inquiry was adjourned pending further investigations. The starting of Mr. C. O’Connor, who was assisted by Mr. A. Vincent, was an excellent tribute to the work of the two officials named, their send-offs being quite one of the pleasing features of the afternoon. Mr. Hartgill, from his vantage spot in the judge’s box, gave his decisions promptly and accurately. The club’s president, Mr. S. Bolton, was assiduous in his attention to visitors, who one and all came away with pleasant recollections of their association with the governing official of the Woodville Club. The totalisatcr staff was kept busy during the a'ternoon handling £l4 582, compared with £ll 079 that was dealt with at the corresponding day’s meeting last year, the resu’t showing a decided increase on the figures for to-day. The result should prove satisfactory to the club, and proves that came well provided with the sinews of war. Results: — MAIDEN PDATE rf 65sovs; second 5 sovs from stake. Six furlongs. 1 — M.
