WELLINGTON.

(By

“Lorgnette.”)

WELLINGTON, April 29. Miss Marie Baines’ five nights’ season at the Opera House was a great success. Both Miss Baines and her clever company “caught on” real good with Wellington playgoers. During the present week the company visits some of the principal inland towns en route for Auckland. The George Marlow Company opened a three-week’s season at the Opera House last Saturday evening with “A Girl’s Temptation” to a packed house. Both play and players received a great reception. During the season, which is an assured success, “The Luck of Roaring Camp” and “Driving a Girl to Destruction” will be staged. Captain Amundsen’s lecture at the Town Hall last Wednesday night was listened, to by a very large audience. The Dominion tour of the Wykeham--Nable -Comedy Company- opens at Auckland on May 27th. The repertoire for the tour will include “Mr. Plaster of Paris,’.’ “My Other Wife,” and “The Belle of Newport. The New Theatre (Macmahon and Donnelly’s picture palace) celebrated its first anniversary a few days ago. During the first twelve months this cosy and popular picture house was visited by over half a million people. - Amongst the many attractions to be introduced to Dominion playgoers during the present year will be the original English Pierrots, who made such a success with the music lovers of Wellington during the run of the Industrial Exhibition last year. This combination of nine performers has been in existence for the past eight years, giving regular seasons at their Pavilion, St. Kilda, Melbourne. The combination is under the direction of Messrs. W. and R. Thomas and Maynard Dakin. Mr. Dakin, who is the comedian of the company, comes with a great reputation from the English halls, including the London Empire and Pavilion. He is also an entertainer of long standing in the English concert world. The tour of the company, which opens at the Town Hall, Wellington, on May 16th, will extend until the 9th September, during which the four centres and every town of importance will be visited. Mr. Victor Beck is filling the position of touring manager. Mr. Eric Waters, second son of Mr. F. V. Waters, chief clerk of the General Post Office, has been appointed teacher of the pianoforte in the Nelson School of Music, vice Miss Phyllis Fell, resigned. Mr. Waters, junr., was a pupil of Mr. Robert Parker, of Wellington, and has held the position of deputy organist of St. Paul’s ProCathedral for some time past. ,L C. Williamson’s “Everywoman” company were passengers by the Maori for Christchurch on Friday night. Mr. R. Stewart informed me that the company did splendid business in the overland tour from Auckland. The Fuller’s continue to do satisfactory business with their vaudeville show at the Theatre Royal. A cable message which was received in Wellington on the 22nd inst. from London, states that Miss Van Staveren, of Wellington, and a daught-
