HAWKE’S BAY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) NAPIER, April 27. J. Hercock, who was. laid aside owing to the accident he met with at Marton last September, has recently made a good recovery, and is now a regular attendant on the tracks at Hastings, where he is schooling 'Corazon and his full-brother Bravest in their exercises over the obstacles. Ventura, the biggest winner amongst the two-year-old contingent in the Sister States of Australia, is at the present time enjoying a spell on her owner’s property at Ngatarawa. The bay colt by Royal Artillery out of Lady Rylstone that Mr Watt gave 160 guineas for at the late thoroughbred sales in Sydney, accompanied Ventura on her trip across the Tasman Sea, and is now quartered at T. Quinlivan’s establishment at Hastings. Mr G. B. McKay, who for several years controlled the Grand Hotel at Hastings, and who is a part owner of Amato, has disposed of his in-
terests in the Grand. Last Thursday evening he was tendered a send-off (he is leaving for a trip to Australia), and his many friends and wellwishers presented him with a solid tea and coffee service suitably engraved, while the wish was voiced by the numerous party present that Mr McKay and his wife would have an enjoyable time in Australia. A coming three-year-old daughter of Signalman’s, out of Parasite, is being handled by Mr F. J• Bassett, of Waipukurau, who has also got Moree and The Swallow under his direction. The Waipukurau Jockey Club made a profit of nearly £5OO as a result of their annual race meeting on Easter Monday. At a committee meeting held on Wednesday night, the secretary, Mr W. G. Nightingale, was voted a bonus of £l5, as ar appreciation of his efforts in conducting the meeting. It is interesting to note that the Club established a record in every department. Jason, the Achilles —Stepina rising two-year-old that was recently acquired by Mr E. J. Watt, is making good headway in his studies, and the resolute, speedy style in which he hits out stamps him as the making of a hummer. The Dunedin sport who races under the nom-de-course of Mr J. Flaneur recently purchased Golden Clasp from Mr F. Lopdell. He has now written expressing his satisfaction at the appearance of the chestnut mare. If she goes on as well as she was doing here previous to meeting with an accident six months ago,
“Mr Flaneur” will be as well pleased with her efforts as he is with the outlook of Douglas’ daughter. A half-brother by Merriwee to Undecided, and a son of Gaxeley’s out of Mimic, both of whom are two-year-olds, are being got ready for the fray at Ngatarawa. The pair are well forward, and should soon be seen out in the open in quest of stake money. The Waipawa County Racing Club, who were eliminated by the Gaming Commission, intend applying to the Racing Conference for a date for a race meeting during next season. The Hon. J. D. Ormond has claimed the following cognomens for some of his yearlings:—Bay gelding by Birkenhead —Agony, Anguish; bay gelding by Birkenhead —Banzai, Banian; bay filly by Birkenhead — Lyrebird, Lyreique; bay colt by Birkenhead — Gladness, Plaisir; brown gelding by Vasco —-Pellicle, Vascular; bay gelding by Zimmerman —Trentalto, Zimmer; bay filly by Birkenhead —Enna, Eoa. Several of the young ’uns by All Black are being handled at Ngatarawa. They all give promise of developing into good sorts. Morning, who ran second to Merrimac in the hack welter at Awapuni
last Wednesday, is a son of that good mare Evening by Sylvia Park He is the property of Mr F. Armstrong, of Akitio, and is one of R. Gooseman’s pupils at Hastings. The rising three-year-old full-sister to Colleen Mary has been christened Hiwitapu. No Idea, who was disposed of by Mr P. Dolbell after competing in the Maiden Plate at Waipukurau on Easter Monday, has been turned out for a holiday, and she will not be asked to do anything until next spring. Kopu, who is resting at his birthplace, Te Mahanga Station, is going along the right way, and is apparently making rapid strides towards the recovery of good health.
