TURF RESULTS.

GISBORNE RACING CLUB’S STEEPLECHASE MEETING. FIRST DAY. Glorious weather prevailed for the opening of the Gisborne Racing Club’s Steeplechase meeting at the Park racecourse . on July 6. The attendance was a record one, and included visitors from all over the Dominion. The entries were large and the racing interesting. Mr. W. G. Sherratt, occupied the judge’s box, Mr. A. G. Wood despatched the fields, while Mr. H. E. Dodd proved an indefatiguable secretary. The sum of £7934 was put through the total!sator, against £4562 on the corresponding day last year. On the last race there was the sum of £1629 on the machine, a record for any one race in Poverty Bay. The results were as follow: — HANDICAP HURDLE RACE of 80sovs. One mile and three-quarters. Mr. W. Also started: Obscurity 9.2, Berengaria 9.0. A great race. Won by a length. Time, Imin 48 3-ssec. AUSTRALIAN RACES. VICTORIA RACING CLUB’S' GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. The V.R.C. brought the Grand National meeting to a conclusion at Flemington on Saturday. The following was the result of the principal event: — THE GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE. of 20sovs each for starters, with 1500sovs added; second horse to receive 300sovs and third horse 150sovs out of the stake. About three miles and a furlong. Mr. C. T. Godby’s b m Confide, 6yrs, by Marcombe—Trust. 10.2 1 Mr. ~W. Hill’s blk m Leah Kleshna, syrs, by Carbineer —Spieler, 9.3 .... 2 Mr. J. iP. Cox’s b g Grafnax, aged, by Grafton —Xantippe, 13.5 3 Also started: Ripon 12.6, Central Green 11.4, Harvest 11.2, Simple Simon 10.11, Lycaon 10.2, Squirm 9.12, Hawthorn 9.10. Obelisk 9.10, Thunderstorm 9.8, Arty 9.0. Squirm was the first to show out, with Harvest, Central Green and Leah Kleshna and Confide following. Arty led over the first fence, with Obelisk and Squirm next. Ripon took charge at the bridge, Arty and Confied being his closest attendants. Soon after Arty baulked. Approaching the straight Hawthorn was leading, with Squirm, Ripon, and Central Green next. Hawthorn showed the way out of the straight, when Lycaon dashed to the front, and he secured a four leng-ths’ lead along the river from Hawthorn, Central Green and Ripon. Grafnax took command at the seven furlongs post, and at the abattoirs he held a four lengths’ lead from Confide, who was followed by Squirm, Lycaon and Ripon. Grafnax had the advantage of Confide over the last fence, but the latter stayed it out in fine style, and drawing away he won by five lengths from Leah Kleshna. who was four lengths in front of Grafnax.
