SOUTH AUCKLAND FACING CLUB’S MEETING. The annual two days’ meeting of the South Auckland Racing Club was brought off on Friday and Saturday last in fine weather, although early on Saturday morning heavy rain fell and made the crack very slippery, particularly at the turn into the straight. In every event but one horses came to grief at this spot, but fortunately the mishaps were not attended with any serious results. R. E. Brown and B. Deeley were the only riders injured at all, both receiving a severe shaking. The racing was the best yet provided on the course, the fields being good, whilst some of the norses competing were of a high calibre. The starting, which plays an important part in the success or otherwise of a race meeting, was in the hands of Dlr Jackman. of Queensland. who officiated for the second time in New' Zealand on Friday. While not wishing to place Mr Jackman on the same plane as Messrs. O’Connor or Piper, it must be admitted that, if we except one event, he acquitted himself well, in fact his despatches were generally marked by evenness and were much in advance of those we see at some of the small meetings. He is strict with the riders, but is not severe, and Clubs rho are in search of a competent man to manipulate should give him a trial. Betting, now confined to the machine. showed a substantial increase, the sum of £3519 being handled. OPENING DAY'S RAGING. /The programme commenced, on- Fri.dhy with the Trial -Handicap,, backers going: strongly ,f or Presently,, one of.

P. Jones Ellerslie string. ’ Lloyds and J ollie Fille also carried coin, but none of the trio ran into a place. Presently was left altogether, and took no part in the race. Miss wairiki was first out, and she led to rhe straight, wiiei-e St. Wood took charge, and going on won nicely from Leafire and Romantic. The winner is trained by W. Olive, at Elamilton, and is just the sort to make a fencer. The Ciaudlands Handicap saw Miss Winnie go out favourite, second choice being Blue Garment. The favourite was first away, but she was scon headed by Bogey, Peggy Pryde, and Blue Garment, and so they ran till the straight was entered, when Peggy Pryde rushed to the front, and holding off opposition, the little mare won by a length from Blue Garments, with Gyrene, which put in a good run ovei - the last two furlongs, half a length away third. Blue Garment who has been enjoying a spell, ran well, and should soon be amongst the winners.

In the Cup all the ten acceptors went to the post, Flying Soult being favourite, and then in the order of betting came Miss Livonia, Tattoo, Uranium, and Wauchope. When the barrier lifted Uranium was left altogether, and took no part in the race. As usual Wauchope was the first to show out, and he led past the stand, followed by Tattoo and Master Jack, with Delegate and Franklin at the tail of the field. Wauchope was still in the lead along the back and across the top stretch, and he turned into the straight just clear of Tattoo and Master Jack, with Miss Livonia next. A furlong from home Wauchope had Tattoo beaten, and it looked as though Mr Ring’s horse would score an easy victory, but this was not to be, .as Delegate, who was a long way back when the straight was entered, came from the clouds, and flying ovei* the last bit, he just failed to catch Wauchope by a head. Tattoo was third, about a length away, followed by Miss Livonia. Seldom was favourite in the Hurdles, and he pulled his backers through nicely. Taiaha. Field Marshall, and Sabine were alternately in the lead, but at the straight entrance Seldom took charge, and keeping off Don Quex, who also put in a good run, he won comfortably by two lengths. Field Marshall was a fair third.

That useful horse Electrakoff, who has been off the scene for some months, was selected as the most likely of the eight runners to land the money attached to the Publicans’ Handicap. Cyrene was second choice and Royal Soult, who was making his first appearance since his term of disqualification expired, was third selection. Impulsive made the running in the early stages, but once in the straight Electrakoff forged to the front, and won by half a length from Scotch, who ran a good race. Impulsive was third, and Royal Soult fourth.

There were fifteen starters in the District Hack Handicap, Sir Walter, a brother to Turbine, being made an odds-on favourite. He was in front after going a couple of furlongs, and won easily from Taketumu, with Lord Menschikoff third. If memory serves me this is the third yeai’ in succession that Mr F. Nicol has supplied the winner of this event, his previous success being gained by Haku and Tattoo.

The last race, the Flying Handicap, was spoiled by a bad start. Hikuai was favourite, while Lady French and Mighty Atom had plenty of supporters. The field appeared to leave the barrier anyhow. Mighty Atom and Haku being so badly left that their riders pulled up. Hikua entered the straight with a fair lead, but he stopped to nothing, and Lady French took charge, and going on, won by a couple of lengths from Urukehu, with Miss Stella third. After the race the stewards had Whittaker. rider of Mighty Atom, before them for not continuing on in the race after leaving the barrier, and after hearing the evidence, disqualified him for the rest of the meeting. SECOND DAY. As remarked above, heavy rain fell in the early morning of Saturday, and this made the track slippery, with

the result that several horses during the afternoon came to grief. The various officials carried out their duties satisfactorily, under the conductorship of Mr W. I. Conradi, the Club’s secretary. Betting was again spirited, the sum of £7,446 10s being handled during the two days, or £4,8 50 more, than last year.

The starting showed great improvement compared to the opening day, and Mr Jackman is to be congratulated on his dispatches. Previous to commencing the racing the stewards met and re-opened the case of Whittaker, who, the day previous was disqualified ifor the remainder of the meeting. After hearing additional evidence it was decided to remove the disqualification and impose a fine of £2.

Racing opened with the Hurdles, for which Don Quex was a particularly strong order, notwithstanding that Seldom won nicely the day before. Don Quex was at once taken to the front, but fell on the flat at the head of the straight the first time. Luscombe, Taiaha, and Field Marshall were continually changing places in the lead till the straight was reached the last time, when Seldom Jan to the front, and won nicely by a couple of lengths from Taiaha, with Luscombe third. The winner paid a surprisingly good dividend. In the County Handicap Leafire was favourite, but there was also money for Taketumu, and shrewd ones were going for Hairiemo, who had finished out of a place the previous day. The queer named one was quickly out in front, and soon established a big lead. He was never seriously troubled, and won easily by a couple of lengths from Romantic, with Leafire third. Leonite, Taketumu, and Blue Rocket fell.

In the Shorts Handicap Mighty Atom was favourite, with Lady French second choice. Miss Winnie and Mighty Atom were the first to show out, and the pair raced together to the turn, when Mighty Atom drew out and won bj r a couple of lengths from Haku, who came from a long way back, and beat Miss Winnie half a length for second money and dividend. Freemantle fell, and his rider (R. E. Brown) receiving a bad shaking.

The principal event of the day the Waikato Handicap saw Uranium made a slightly better favourite than Electrakoff. Flying Soult and Uranium raced together in front till the turn for home when Uranium fell and this left Flying Soult to go on and win by a couple of lengths from Electrakoff which just lasted long enough to defeat the faster-finishing Master Jack by a head for second moneyMiss Livonia was fourth.

In the District Welter, Urukehu was made the hottest favourite of the meeting, but she had to strike her colours to Bluemount, who Conquest hopped out of the barrier quickly and slipping his field, ran home an easy winner by a couple of lengths from the favourite with Leafire third. Scotch was a strong order in the Welter Handicap and he pulled his backers through although had Fraulein been ridden with a little more judgment she may have reversed places with the leader. Scotch and Explosive were in front all the way, Scotch winning by a length with Fraulein, who lay a long way back till well in the straight close up third. St. Wood fell.

The Farewell Handicap brought the gathering to a close and of the runners. Haku, who had the services of Whittaker was most in request. He was in front throughout and won nicely by a length from Impulsive, who beat Bogey for second place. Positive fell. The results are as follows. FIRST DAY. TRIAL HANDICAP of 30sovs. Seven furlongs.
