WANGANUI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

WANGANUI, January 23.

Mr J. N. Coleman, owner of Moose, and other horses, has purchased Shannon Lass, and the daughter of Merriwee ran in his nomination at Foxton on Saturday, when she was heavily backed, but failed to score. Grandee, the two-year-old brother to Vi, continues to gallop in very pleasing style. He will make his first appearance in public in the two-year-old events at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. The nominations for the W.J.C. gathering, which close on Tuesday, the 2 4th inst., are expected to be very large, and some good horses are likely to be engaged, especially in the Cup. Flying, and Jackson Stakes.

The Wellington meeting did not attract many horses from this part, but stay-at-home backers had a good innings on the opening day, Miss Mischief and Gipsy Bell carrying a lot of money.

The spell that John has had recently should have done him good, and he ought to be in capital nick by March, when he will probably be amongs; the starters in the Wanganui Cup. The Cuirassier gelding has been very unlucky so far this season, having run prominently in several Cups without managing to secure first honours.

W. Price, the well-known Wanganui rider, had the mount on Sunburnt at Trentham on Saturday. Irish Rifle is being spoken of as a possible winner of the Wanganui Cup, though the majority reckon that the distance, one mile and threequarters, will prove too far for the son of Musketry. Irish Rifle has always run well on the Wanganui course, and may be regarded as sure to take a power of beating in any event he starts in here, as he is said to be bowling along in great style just now. He is engaged at Pahiatua, where he is top weight in the Cup.

The Stratford Racing Club made a profit of about £lOOO over its New Year meeting, which is a very gratifying result. The club deserves success, as it treats owners very liberally, and its meetings l are run on the most up-to-date lines.
