RACING CLUBS AND TOTALISATOR PERMITS.

COUNTRY CLUBS TAKE ACTION.

The Wellington Town Hall presented a busy scene on Friday night, (writes our Wellington correspondent), when a representative meeting of Delegates of Country Racing Clubs was held with a view of considering the clauses relating to the reduction of totalisator permits as provided by clause 5 of the Gaming Act Amendment Bill. The following clubs were represented:—

Tologa Bay, Woodville, Avondale, Northern Wairoa, Rotorua, South Auckland, Takapuna, Te Aroha, Whangarei, Geraldine, Westland, Nelson, Napier Park, Waipawa, Gore, North Otago, Riverton, Taieri, Tapanui, Winton, Wyndham, Egmont, Ashhurst, x’ eliding, Foxton, Manawatu, Marton, Rangitikei, Lower Valley, Masterton, Otaki, Taratahi-Car-terton, Wairarapa, and Alexandra. Mr. A. Bruce, president of the Thames Jockey Club, was voted to the chair. The meeting was not open to the press. The following resolution was unanimously adopted: — That this meeting of representatives of country clubs throughout New Zealand is unanimously of opinion that the reduction of totalisator permits as provided by clause 5 of the Gaming Act Amendment Bill is not only opposed to the best interests of racing clubs but Is unjustified, as although the population of the Dominion has largely increased and new districts have been opened up and rapidly settled upon during the last ten years the number of totalisator permits during the same period has been materi-

ally reduced. We therefore urge that no further reduction in the number of permits be made-

There was considerable discussion on the proposal in the Bill to reduce the number of racing days, and a committee of four was set up to give evidence before the Parliamentary Committee, definite instructions being given them in regard to the question. The committee comprises—Messrs. O’Malley (Geraldine), Saunders (Riverton), Bruce (Thames), . and Alison (Takapuna). The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Thames Club for convening the meeting and one to Mr. E. J. Gothard, of the Woodville Jockey Club, for acting as secretary.

Special Patch, by Specialist, in Hamilton’s stable, who, rumour has it, can muster up considerable pace, was not nominated for the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting owing to the colt meeting with an accident. Of the two-year-olds at Ellerslie, Tranquil is coming along nicely, and this filly should run much better at Ellerslie than was the case at Avondale. On Tuesday morning she left half-a-mile on the grass behind in 49 3-5 —the fastest of the morning. At the same time, it has to be remembered that the grass is faster now than it has ever been. Advocate still continues to bowl along freely in his efforts on the track and the Hotchkiss horse will be quite ready to take on the opposition when November arrives.

North Head has not been asked to do any solid galloping yet, and it will be jute: esting to see whethex' the Birkenhead go l ding will stand the test. Cloudy Dawn has not progressed as well as one could wish since the Avondale meeting, and his pace appears to be just about the same. He is such a big colt that it would perhaps have been better had he not been raced in the early part of the season. F. Macmanemin sent Soultline’s brother, Maxwell, along for a fast seven furlongs on Tuesday morning. Minstrel joined in at the five-furlong post to bring Maxwell home, but although the pair were together at the finish, it was only on sufferance on Minstrel’s part.

Nominations for the Otahuhu Trotting Club’s spring meeting close with the secretary, Mr. F. D. Yonge, Dur-ham-street, to-morrow.

Acceptances for all events to be edcided on the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting, together with a final payment fox" the Welcome Stakes and Great Northern Guineas fall due with the secretary, Mr. J- F. Hartland, Shortlandstreet, to-morrow (Friday) at 9 p.m. W. Price will pilot North-East and St. Bill in their Ellerslie engagements.

Inspection was withdrawn from all engagements at the A.R.C. meeting on Friday last. The next payment in connection with the New Zealand Cup falls due on Tuesday?'

Weights for the minor events at the C.J.C. Metropolitan meeting are due to appear to-morrow. Tawhaki was telegraphed through in the list of acceptors for the New Zealand Cup, but this is an error, as the son of Menschikoff was scratched a couple of weeks ago. After a long spell Aristos has made his reappearance at Ellerslie. He has filled out nicely and looks a much better horse than formerly. He is still in B- Mobberley’s stable.
